Bargains and random observations

I think we can safely say the hot weather has broken for the year.

Anything for baking is a very good price or at least heavily promoted (huge piles near the supermarket entrance) and will be for another two weeks now. Holiday dinner entrees – roasting fowl, hams, and huge regions of cow – are also inescapable. This second week in December is Lager Week, and tomorrow, the 10th, is Lager Day. Saturday is National Cocoa Day – did you know that hot cocoa and hot chocolate are two different drinks? I didn’t: more at http://wwwrentips.blogspot.com. The 13th is another of the baffling ones, National Ice Cream And Violins Day (I like both but had never made a mental association before), and the 16th, a week from today, is (fanfare!) National Chocolate Covered Anything Day.

December 9th: National Pastry Day
December 10th: National Lager Day
December 11th: National Noodle Ring Day
December 12th: National Cocoa Day, National Ambrosia Day, Gingerbread House Day
December 13th: National Ice Cream and Violins Day
December 14th: National Bouillabaisse Day
December 15th: National Cupcake Day (another source has it as National Lemon Cupcake Day)
December 16th: National Chocolate Covered Anything Day (I could add links to that entry, but really a very disturbing percentage of them would not unsafe for a family blog)

Very quickly she changed the subject:

Bargains and a bonus cartoon link

There was no bargain sheet (or posting) last week because there were no grocery flyers last week.

Welcome to December, National Fruit Cake Month. I dare you to tell me this comes as a surprise. (The best fruitcakes are from Collin Street Bakery, but you already know this. There are only three non-Collin-Street fruitcakes in the world, and each has been re-gifted to someone new every year since 1967.) It is also National Eggnog Month, another shocker, and the first week of December is National Cookie Cutter Week.

Aside from Thanksgiving itself, the only big thing we missed in the last week of November was the 29th, National Chocolates Day (as distinguished from National Chocolate Day, which was October 28th). Tomorrow is National Apple Pie Day, which is very nice for those who think as I do that apple pie is better than anything. The 5th is Repeal Day, in honor of the passing of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, so let us all drink to that. And then drink again the next day in honor of that greatest of conveniences, for it is National Microwave Oven Day.

December 2nd: National Fritters Day
December 3rd: National Apple Pie Day
December 4th: National Cookie Day
December 5th: Repeal of Prohibition Day, National Sachertorte Day
December 6th: National Gazpacho Soup Day, Microwave Oven Day
December 7th: National Cotton Candy Day (Shouldn't that come in summer?)
December 8th: National Chocolate Brownie Day
December 9th: National Pastry Day

I really should not put off these postings

Thanksgiving is this Thursday and I am already sick of the word “turkey”.

The 19th was National Caffeinated Carbonated Beverage Day, a good day to get caffeinated (my own choices are Diet Pepsi with a shot of lemon juice or Diet Mountain Dew). The 21st is National Gingerbread Day, and I’m sure a box of gingerbread mix made with a can of diet ginger ale would be a great combination.

November 18th: National Vichyssoise Day
November 19th: Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day
November 20th: Beaujolais Nouveau Day, National Peanut Butter Fudge Day
November 21st: National Gingerbread Day, National Stuffing Day (why now I do not know)
November 22nd: National Cashew Day
November 23rd: National Espresso Day (or possibly tomorrow -- my sources do not agree), Eat A Cranberry Day
November 24th: National Sardines Day, alternate National Espresso Day, National Use Even If Seal Is Broken Day (HIGHLY DISRECOMMENDED)
November 25th: National Parfait Day

If you run across any bargains I’ve missed please post them.

Jim and Alice -- welcome back, it's good to see you again!

Today is, to rectify my egregious misspelling in last week’s blog entry, National Sundae Day. Tomorrow is National Pizza With Everything (Except Anchovies) Day. These are not to be taken as recommendations. The 14th is National Pickle Day, and this you may indeed take as a recommendation as most pickles (except possibly the sweet kind) are Points-free.

List of various healthy/low-calorie/low-Points/low price bargain opportunities (with tips and irrelevant trivia), week of November 4th

The very first of the new crop of navel oranges are in, heralding the Annual Southwestern Citrus Inundation. Within a few months you will not be able to enter a retail establishment without having citrus fruits fling themselves at your head.

Today is National Candy Day. Why National Candy Day comes four days after Halloween is a mystery. Tomorrow is Guy Fawkes Night – “Remember, remember the Fifth of November!” Sunday is National Harvey Wallbanger Day. I do not have enough imagination to make up such items as these:

November 4th: National Candy Day
November 5th: National Doughnut Day
November 6th: National Nachos Day
November 7th: Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day
November 8th: National Cappuccino Day, National Harvey Wallbanger Day
November 9th: National Scrapple Day, Cook Something Bold & Pungent Day
November 10th: National Vanilla Cupcake Day
November 11th: National Sunday Day

Albertson’s has the first free turkeys of the year: this week only, if you spend $100 at a single transaction you can get a free turkey up to 15 lbs. (You may need a coupon, but it’s on the front page of the flyer which is available at the door.) Starting this week, in fact, turkeys, whole hams, and anything used for baking will be either on sale or heavily promoted in every store you step into.

If you’re thinking of deep-frying a turkey this year: A three-ounce serving of oven-roasted turkey breast contains 125 calories and 1.8 grams of fat, with a Points count of 3. Three ounces of deep-fried turkey breast contains 335 calories and 21 grams of fat, for a Points total of 8.

If you run across any good bargains I’ve missed, there’s a whole empty Comments box down there just waiting.

Various bargains and food-related information, week of October 28th

According to Consumerist, Burger King in Japan are selling a seven-layer Whopper in honor of the release of Windows 7 – and if you ask nicely and pay for it, Burger King in the U.S. might make one for you. According to someone who’s eaten one, it’s “like eating an elephant.” According to my own very rough calculations (I took the count from a standard Whopper and added the Points for six more hamburger patties), it is twenty-nine Points. They’re your Points to spend, but I can think of better things to spend them on.

Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity has released a study -- covered at (again) Consumerist and Consumer Reports -- on the marketing of sugar-laden breakfast foods. According to their research, on 277 different cereal varieties, “cereals marketed directly to children have 85 percent more sugar, 65 percent less fiber, and 60 percent more sodium than cereals marketed to adults.” Also, of the cereals advertised directly to children, “only 8 percent meet the nutrition standards needed to be included in the USDA’s food stamp program”.

November is Georgia Pecan Month, Good Nutrition Month, National Fun With Fondue Month, National Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month, National Pepper Month, National Pomegranate Month, Raisin Bread Month, Vegan Month, and the third consecutive National Apple Month. This Friday, the 30th, is National Candy Corn Day – Debi, there’s your excuse. Sunday, November 1st, is very unofficially National Half Price Chocolate Day.

October 28th: National Chocolate Day, Wild Foods Day
October 29th: National Oatmeal Day
October 30th: National Candy Corn Day, Buy A Doughnut Day
October 31st: National Candy Apple Day, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Day
November 1st: National Deep Fried Clams Day, National Vinegar Day
November 2nd: National Deviled Egg Day
November 3rd: National Sandwich Day
November 4th: National Candy Day

Bashas’ stores are having in-store trick-or-treating on Halloween from noon to 4:00 p.m., with free cookies and apple cider. From there you can go to Fry’s where the trick-or-treating is from 4:00 to 7:00.

AT LAST! What was that about, Blogspot?

Finally I'm able to post! Blogger was down last night every time I tried.

Hat-tip to Consumerist: “As part of its ongoing efforts to ‘help consumers balance calories consumed with calories expended,’ Coca-Cola plans to roll out a 90-calorie can later this year.” This 90-calorie can will still contain five and one-half teaspoons of sugar.

Pork is down, probably because of the season.

Today is both National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day and National Caramel Apple Day. The 25th is National Greasy Foods Day, a day we all will certainly honor more in the breach than the observance; and the 28th is National Wild Foods Day. (Don’t look like that. If you’ve ever eaten a mulberry off a tree, you’ve foraged for wild food.) This fourth week of October is also Chicken Soup For The Soul Week. More food-of-the-day days this week:

October 21st: Caramel Apple Day, National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day
October 22nd: National Nut Day
October 23rd: National Canning Day, National Boston Cream Pie Day
October 24th: National Bologna Day, Good & Plenty Day
October 25th: National Greasy Foods Day
October 26th: Pumpkin Day, Pretzel Day, Mince Meat Pie Day
October 27th: National Potato Day, American Beer Day (Oddly enough, National Potato Month is September.)
October 28th: National Chocolate Day (how many of those are there?), Wild Foods Day

Sprouts is having a gluten-free sale, 25% off. Safeway has milk for $1.37.

Sorry if this week's handout seemed a bit rushed or perfunctory, but I had a dental appointment Wednesday afternoon and had forgotten about it so didn’t type this up until the last minute. If you find anything I’ve missed, please PLEASE post it at http://wwwrentips.blogspot.com

The 14th of the month was – apparently a holdover from a long-forgotten and wholly unmourned 1950s and early ‘60s fad – National Chocolate Covered Insects Day. Oo yum. This being the third week of October, it is National Kraut Sandwich Week (sauerkraut is Points-free, isn't it?) and National Pickled Peppers Week.

October 14th: National Chocolate Covered Insects Day
October 15th: National Chicken Cacciatore Day, National Roast Pheasant Day

All the best healthy deals, week of October 7th

THE HEAT HAS BROKEN. LET US ALL CELEBRATE.

And I'm sorry this week's printout was so hard to read -- I kept pulling the toner cartridge out and shaking it, but it didn't help much.

Albertson’s is having a good seafood sale this week, for those fortunate enough to like seafood. In fact, since October is National Seafood Month you may be able to find it at good prices – or at least heavily promoted – all month long. It is also Popcorn Poppin’ Month – spelling not mine – and National Chili Month. And this, the second week in October, is not National Beer Week but National American Beer Week along with National School Lunch Week and – I hope you all remembered your cans to drop in the box – National Food Bank Week.

Tomorrow is National Fluffernutter Day. This was not my idea. Friday is Moldy Cheese Day, and before you make faces remember that mold is what makes the bleu cheese bleu. (Debi, who if I recall correctly does not like bleu cheese, is probably right now appreciating that it is correctly pronounced “blergh”.)

And for just a little more blergh in case that wasn’t enough, a week from today is National Chocolate Covered Bugs Day. Yummee. In fact:

October 7th: National Frappe Day
October 8th: National Fluffernutter Day
October 9th: Moldy Cheese Day, National Submarine/Hoagie/Hero/Grinder/Wedgie/Po' Boy/Huge Long Overloaded Sandwich Day
October 10th: National Angel Food Cake Day
October 11th: National Sausage Pizza Day
October 12th: National Gumbo Day, World Egg Day

Bargains and good deals for the week of September 30

Bye-bye, summer fruit, you were nice while you lasted. The new crops of winter squashes and some root crops are in.

Milk is still up except at Safeway.

September 30 was National Hot Mulled Cider Day, proof positive that the people who plan these "holidays" do not live in central Arizona. The first week of October is National Chili Week, and October in fact is National Chili Month, so you'd better make a big pot. October is also Eat Country Ham Month, Fair Trade Month, National Apple Month (yes, again!), National Applejack Month (not the breakfast cereal), National Caramel Month, National Cookie Month, National Dessert Month (as if we needed any encouragement in that area!), National Pasta Month, National Pickled Peppers Month, National Pizza Festival Month, National Popcorn Poppin’ Month, National Pork Month, National Pretzel Month (not to be confused with National Soft Pretzel Month, which is April), National Sausage Month, National Seafood Month, and Vegetarian Awareness Month.

Belated bargain guide, supposedly for the week of September 16th

Sorry, everyone, for the delay, but I think I'm going to survive this cold. And I do mean to see you at next week's meeting if I can manage it without infecting you all.

Chicken is pretty good at a number of places. I think we may be seeing the last of the stone fruits for this year: pity. The new crops of pears and apples are moving in. Grapes are very good.

Several places have candy-corn 10/$10. Shh! Nobody tell Debi!

Bargain guide, week of September 2nd

Sorry for the shortness of this week’s sheet: I got no flyers for Rancho Grande, Smart & Final or Sprouts.

Welcome to September. Welcome also to – I swear I could not make all of these up – Food Safety Month, National Rice Month, National Potato Month, National Honey Month, National Papaya Month, National Biscuit Month, National Chicken Month, National Mushroom Month, National Better Breakfast Month, National Ice Cream Sandwich Month, National Organic Harvest Month, National Cholesterol Awareness Month, and National Bourbon Heritage Month. It is also National Apple Month, but that will continue through November – yes, apples get three consecutive months all their own.

Labor Day is this weekend, which means good prices on soft drinks and anything that can be put onto a grill. Stone fruits are still good, apples and pears are coming in: typing this up every week has made me so much more aware of the seasonality of fruits and how it changes, not just month to month but week to week!

Wine Season and Oyster Season both begin this month.

September 2nd: National Blueberry Popsicle Day
September 3rd: National Welsh Rarebit Day (I am a traditionalist and still think of it as "Welsh rabbit")
September 4th: National Macadamia Day, Eat an Extra Dessert Day
September 5th: National Cheese Pizza Day
September 6th: National Coffee Ice Cream Day
September 7th: National Acorn Squash Day (healthy), National Napoleon Day (not so much)
September 8th: National Date Nut Bread Day
September 9th: National Weinerschnitzel day, National Steak au Poivre Day (that recipe is better with red wine instead of beef broth)
