Bargain guide, week beginning December 29th

Tomorrow is National Bicarbonate of Soda Day – a couple of days in advance of the necessity, I suspect. The day after, December 31st, is unsurprisingly National Champagne Day; the day after is Bloody Mary Day: one cup of tomato juice has a PointsPlus count of 1, but sadly a single shot of vodka (1.5 oz) has a count of 4. New Year’s Day is also Apple Gifting Day, and remember fruit is free!

January is National Soup Month. As I type this it is 44°F out and raining like a pig, so a plate of soup sounds really nice right about now.

December 29th: National Pepper Pot Day
December 30th: National Bicarbonate of Soda Day
December 31st: National Champagne Day
January 1st: National Bloody Mary Day, Apple Gifting Day
January 2nd: National Cream Puff Day
January 3rd: National Chocolate Covered Cherries Day (possibly because there are so very many boxes of them left at drugstores)
January 4th: National Spaghetti Day
January 5th: National Whipped Cream Day

Stay warm and safe, and Happy New Year.

Bargain guide, week beginning December 15th

Today has been National Cupcake Day: tomorrow is National Chocolate Covered Anything Day, both very flexible for modes of celebration. Saturday, the 18th, is National Roast Suckling Pig Day, which I will readily skip over this year as every year. The 21st is National Kiwifruit Day – kiwifruit are free on PointsPlus. Sangria, sadly, is not, despite its fruit content, so if you celebrate National Sangria Day on the 20th you should track it.

PointsPlus got a wholly positive mention on the Fooducate blog. Upshot: “The scientific team at WW revised the points system to encourage consumption of high fiber, high antioxidant produce simply by making them free!... So if you are hungry for a snack, this system nudges you to whole unprocessed fare, not 100 calorie packs of fillers and artificial sweeteners.”

The FDA is cracking down on Dannon, the makers of Activia yogurt. In the future:
• Dannon may no longer claim that any yogurt or dairy drink will reduce your likelihood of catching a cold or flu.
• Dannon may claim that Activia will relieve irregularity or aid “slow intestinal transit time” … as long as the ad mentions that this requires three servings of Activia per day.
• Dannon may not make that claim for any other yogurt, dairy drink, or probiotic food product unless they can produce two well-designed studies to substantiate the claim.

Bargain guide, week beginning December 8th

It’s the second week of December, which is National Lager Week, and the 10th – this Friday – is National Lager Day. Sunday, the 12th, is National Cocoa Day: Swiss Miss “Sensible Sweets” (the one labeled “Diet”) still has a PointsPlus count of 1 for one packet, 1 for two packets! And each packet still counts as a glass of milk. So have two.

The 13th is Ice Cream and Violins Day. This is another of those holidays that fall under the category of “ ... and no one knows why.” The day after is National Bouillabaisse Day: my preferred bouillabaisse recipe is the almost artistically imprecise one in Euell Gibbons’s Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop, the one that begins “3 pounds white-meated fish, 3 cups crustacean shellfish meat, 3 dozen molluscan shellfish … ”

Latest from Fooducate: just what “cold pressed” on a bottle of oil means, and why it has different meanings on the two sides of the Atlantic; and why a European Nutri-Grain bar contains beetroot, and why that’s a good thing.

Bargain guide, week beginning December 1st

I'm grabbing a few minutes away from Operation Cover-To-Cover to update the blog: welcome to December, which is National Fruit Cake Month and National Egg Nog Month. There honestly is such a thing as edible – even delicious – fruit cake, and it comes from Collin Street Bakery. The 5th is National Prohibition Repeal Day – I’ll gladly drink to that.

Donna Currie, at Serious Eats, is currently working on what she’s calling a Sourdough-Starter-Along: a day-by-day project to make her own sourdough starter.

I should probably mention that neither the weekly handout nor this blog are remotely in any way, shape, form, or fashion an official Weight Watchers production. Mine and mine alone.

December 1st: National Pie Day, Eat a Red Apple Day
December 2nd: National Fritters Day
December 3rd: National Apple Pie Day
December 4th: National Cookie Day
December 5th: National Repeal Day, National Sachertorte Day
December 6th: National Gazpacho Day, Microwave Oven Day
December 7th: National Chocolate Brownie Day
December 8th: National Cotton Candy Day

November 30th: National Mousse Day

Remember my mention last week of how the USDA is responsible for both promoting a healthy eating plan and helping Pizza Hut work out ways to put 40% more cheese on their pizzas? Well, over in the UK, their Department of Health has literally put fast-food and processed-food companies – including McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and PepsiCo – directly in charge of writing government policy on obesity and diet-related illness. Insert analogy about wolves and henhouses here.

Heavy promotions this week include turkey, turkey, fresh green beans, turkey, bags of cranberries, turkey, turkey, sweet potatoes, turkey, stuffing mix, turkey, pumpkin pies, and ham.

Bargain guide, week beginning November 10th

This Friday is, I am informed, National Pizza With Everything (Except Anchovies) Day. This Sunday, the 14th, is National Pickle Day – most pickles have a Points count of zero. Baklava, sadly, does not have such a count, but one week from today is nonetheless National Baklava Day. (I once made my own baklava. It occupies the kitchen for an entire day and no one else can do anything in there, not even make coffee.)

November 10th: National Vanilla Cupcake Day
November 11th: National Sundae Day
November 12th: National Pizza With Everything Day (Except Anchovies)
November 13th: National Indian Pudding Day
November 14th: National Pickle Day, National Guacamole Day
November 15th: National Raisin Bran Day, Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day
November 16th: National Fast Food Day
November 17th: National Baklava Day, Homemade Bread Day
November 18th: National Vichyssoise Day

If you watched TV at all over this past summer, you’ll have noticed Domino’s Pizza’s “rebranding” effort: basically a self-deprecating announcement that “Yeah, everyone agrees that our pizza is rubbish, even we acknowledge that it’s rubbish, and now we want to hear your ideas of what we might do to make it better.” According to an article in the New York Times, or clickable at http://wwwrentips.blogspot.com – the primary change in Domino’s pizzas has been a massive increase in the amount of cheese on them … and this was paid for by a government handout. The Domino’s campaign – which cost $12 million – was created and financed by an organization called Dairy Management:

And Dairy Management, which has made cheese its cause, is not a private business consultant. It is a marketing creation of the United States Department of Agriculture – the same agency at the center of a federal anti-obesity drive that discourages over-consumption of some of the very foods Dairy Management is vigorously promoting.
Urged on by government warnings about saturated fat, Americans have been moving toward low-fat milk for decades, leaving a surplus of whole milk and milk fat. Yet the government, through Dairy Management, is engaged in an effort to find ways to get dairy back into Americans’ diets, primarily through cheese.
(Per capita consumption of cheese in the US has nearly tripled since 1970.)

Bargain guide, week beginning November 3rd

November is National Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month – that’s you, Debi! Also Raisin Bread Month, a good combination. It’s several other things as well, most notably Good Nutrition Month, but also Georgia Pecan Month, National Pepper Month, National Pomegranate Month, Vegan Month, Fun With Fondue Month, and the year's third consecutive National Apple Month.

The 4th of this month, oddly, is National Candy Day – “oddly” because I’d have thought it came last Sunday. (The handout erroneously gave the 3rd as the date for Candy Day -- sorry.) This Friday, the 5th, is one of the year’s two separate National Doughnut Days. Next Tuesday, the 9th, is Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day, and also Harvey Wallbanger Day. One week from today is not National Cupcake Day – that’s next month – but very specifically National Vanilla Cupcake Day.

November 3rd: Sandwich Day
November 4th: National Candy Day
November 5th: National Doughnut day (there are at least two of these)
November 6th: National Nachos Day
November 7th: Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day
November 8th: Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day, Harvey Wallbanger Day, National Cappuccino Day
November 9th: National Scrapple Day
November10th: National Vanilla Cupcake Day

The Fooducate blog -- bookmark that -- is doing good series of articles on bread, what you're buying when you buy it, and how to buy it healthy. Part 1 (overview), Part 2 (whole grains), Part 3 (but what else are you getting?)-- there will be more, and you can find them from the main Fooducate page.

Bargain guide, week beginning October 27th

Today is American Beer Day; tomorrow is both National Chocolate Day and Wild Foods Day. Wipe that look off your face. If you’ve ever picked a blackberry off a bush you’ve eaten wild food. Halloween is both Candy Apple Day and, of course, Trick Or Treat For UNICEF Day. One week from today is National Sandwich Day.

Fascinating article at the Fooducate blog: nearly half the calories children under 12 consume are derived from junk food. Meanwhile, McDonald’s stock is at an all-time high and set to continue upwards.

And at Serious Eats, a genuine recipe for homemade candy corn. Honest. Homemade candy corn.

Bargain guide, week beginning October 20

I forgot to mention that this third week of October has been National Kraut Sandwich Week and National Pickled Peppers Week. The 23rd, this Saturday, is National Canning Day. A thrilling thought I’m sure for all of us Arizonans who are thinking at this point “But I just got the kitchen cooled down.” The 25th, Monday, is National Greasy Foods Day: to be honored in the breach rather than the observance. One week from today is American Beer Day, as distinguished from National Beer Day which was April 7th and also from International Beer Day which was August 7th. Oddly, American Beer Week was the second week of October. I have never claimed that all of these were logical.

October 20th: National Brandied Fruit Day
October 21st: National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day, National Caramel Apple Day
October 22nd: National Nut Day
October 23rd: National Canning Day, National Boston Cream Pie Day
October 24th: Good & Plenty Day, National Bologna Day
October 25th: National Greasy Foods Day, World Pasta Day
October 26th: National Pumpkin Day, National Pretzel Day, National Mincemeat Pie Day
October 27th: National Potato Day, American Beer Day

There’s a fascinating article at the Fooducate blog about the common “calories-in-equals-calories-out” notion, which it turns out may be incomplete: in a study done in Sweden, volunteers who snacked on candy and sweets gained more weight than those who snacked on an equal calorie value of peanuts. (The article also adds that the difference is “second order magnitude” when compared to Americans’ overall need to bloody well eat less.)

Marion Nestle, at Food Politics, has posted a collection of links to various articles on recent obesity research. (Calorie-free sweeteners may not trigger overeating after all.)

And courtesy of Consumerist, a site called Eat With A Spork has produced a program to determine exactly how much you’d have to eat – and spend – to win various prizes in the McDonald’s Monopoly game. (To win $500 cash, I had to eat 131,714 Big Macs – that’s 71,125,560 calories, 3,819,706 grams (that’s 8,421 pounds) of fat, and 136,982,560 milligrams (302 pounds) of sodium, and spend $491,293.22.
