It’s a week and a half to the Super Bowl and we’re already being inundated with promotions for beverages, salty crunchy things, and stereotypical “guy food”. Also large-screen TVs which are not under the purview of this handout.
February 3rd will be Carrot Cake Day, which it may be possible to render Points-friendly if you use something other than cream cheese for the frosting. Remember – all pickles are Points-free, and the first week of February is Shape Up With Pickles Week. Also there’s more to February than heart-shaped boxes of chocolate: February will be among many other things Berry Fresh Month (please believe I did not make that name up), Fiber Focus Month, National Grapefruit Month, and National Heart Healthy Month!
January 27th: Chocolate Cake Day
January 28th: National Blueberry Pancake Day
January 29th: National Corn Chip Day
January 30th: National Croissant Day
January 31st: Brandy Alexander Day
February 1st: National Baked Alaska Day
February 2nd: Heavenly Hash Day (I have never had the pleasure of enjoying "Heavenly Hash" and can find no two webpages that agree on how to make it -- or indeed whether it is a cake, a candy, a bar cookie, or a fruit salad. Fight it out amongst yourselves.)
February 3rd: National Carrot Cake Day

The latest if not greatest
First, my humble apologies for never getting to last week's online version.
Slate has a fascinating article here on how food companies calculate what a “serving” is. I particularly noted this item, in the comments:
This fourth week of January is National Meat Week and also National Irish Coffee Week. Yesterday was, in descending order of healthiness and WW-compatibility, National Granola Bar Day, National Cheese Lovers’ Day, and National Buttercrunch Day -- you can find information about buttercrunch, and exactly how to differentiate it from toffee, here. And at least one person here, and I know who, will be actively celebrating National Peanut Butter Day on Sunday, the 24th.
The days:
January 20th: National Granola Bar Day, National Cheese Lovers' Day, National Buttercrunch Day
January 21st: New England Clam Chowder Day
January 22nd: National Blonde Brownie Day
January 23rd: National Rhubarb Pie Day
January 24th: National Peanut Butter Day

Slate has a fascinating article here on how food companies calculate what a “serving” is. I particularly noted this item, in the comments:
I remember once picking up a muffin in a convenience store and looking at the fat content. I was surprised to discover that it had only 10 grams of fat. But then I noticed something that made me laugh: this single, ordinary sized muffin was described as three servings. Yeah... one muffin = 3 servings. A pretty underhanded way to try and disguise the fact that the muffin had 30 grams of fat and not 10.

For the benefit of the new members: Welcome! I’m Wren and this is my nest. I talk too much during meetings (ask Debi, she’ll tell you). Every week I go through the newspaper grocery flyers and type up a list of the best prices locally for low-calorie, low-Points, and otherwise healthy foods, long on natural and whole foods and things made out of actual food ingredients. I usually manage to include some food trivia, and I should probably make clear that it is my personal hobby and is not in any way, shape, form, or fashion an official Weight Watchers publication. If you run across any good buys or other information I’ve missed, there's a whole empty Comments section down there just waiting.
The second week in January is National Pizza Week.
January 6th: Bean Day, National Shortbread Day
January 7th: National Tempura Day, Fruitcake Toss Day
January 8th: English Toffee Day
January 9th: National Apricot Day
January 10th: National Bittersweet Chocolate Day
January 11th: Milk Day, Hot Toddy Day
January 12th: Curried Chicken Day, National Marzipan Day
January 13th: National Peach Melba Day
I’ve seen fresh berries and even cherries in recent weeks. The blackberries are decent: I have not tried the cherries. They seem to come from Chile. Chicken is very low this week, as low as fifty cents a pound for whole birds; sadly last week’s good prices on boneless skinless chicken breast seem to have vanished except at Food City and Sprouts.
According to Consumerist, the cold weather in other parts of the country means that wheat and Florida citrus crops may be at risk, which in its turn means that the price of breakfast may rise. Consumerist also has an entertaining article, full of informative links, on how to safely save on your grocery bill by eating stuff you already have.

Oh boy
And such the results of my well-meaning resolution to update this blog regularly ...
That great Weight Watchers standby boneless skinless chicken breast is for some reason cheaply available everywhere I look this week. Do not pay more than $1.57/lb. There is a belief, however, that if you eat chicken on New Year’s Day you are fated to scratch for your living (as a chicken does) all year long: take this exactly as seriously as you please.
National Bread Month was ’way back in November, but January is Bread Machine Baking Month and National Wheat Bread Month. It is also National Candy Month (possibly to keep sales up during what may be a slump between December and February), National Egg Month, National Hot Tea Month, National Meat Month (no specific kind – just, generically, “meat”), National Oatmeal Month, National Soup Month, and Prune Breakfast Month.
December 30th: National Bicarbonate of Soda Day
December 31st: National Champagne Day
January 1st: Bloody Mary Day, Apple Gifting Day
January 2nd: National Cream Puff Day
January 3rd: Chocolate Covered Cherry Day (Some sources give it as Chocolate-Filled Cherry Day, although I don't think I've ever seen those)
January 4th: National Spaghetti Day
January 5th: National Whipped Cream Day
January 6th: Bean Day, National Shortbread Day
Most of my sources have no idea what Bean Day is or why it is celebrated on the sixth of January. They seem not to have made the historical-culinary connection of baking a King Cake for the feast of the Epiphany and putting a bean in it (the person who gets the slice with the bean is king, or queen, for the day).
So make a king cake. Or a pot of beans, for all of me.
