Tomorrow, September 30th, is National Mulled Cider Day. As the forecast high temperature tomorrow is 106°F, my suggestion is that we relocate this holiday to sometime in December or January. And hope the heat breaks soon.
October is National Apple Month. September was also National Apple Month. November will be National Apple Month too. The apple growers’ lobby carries a lot of clout. October is also National Cookie Month, Spinach Lovers’ Month, National Tomato Month, Vegetarian Awareness Month, National Pork Month and National Country Ham Month, National Seafood Month, National Chili Month, and lots more – see below. The 1st, this Friday, is World Vegetarian Day. It is also Homemade Cookies Day: there must be dozens of low-Points cookie recipes out there, maybe even some vegetarian.
October is, in full (as full as I can find, at any rate): Eat Country Ham Month, Fair Trade Month, National Apple Month, National Applejack Month, National Caramel Month, National Chili Month, National Cookie Month, National Dessert Month, National Pasta Month, National Pickled Peppers Month, National Pizza Festival Month, National Popcorn Poppin' {sic} Month, National Pork Month, National Pretzel Month, National Seafood Month, Spinach Lovers' Month, National Tomato Month, and Vegetarian Awareness Month.
The first week in October is National Chili Week and National No Salt Week.

Bargain guide, week beginning September 22nd
Today is National Ice Cream Cone Day – all hail Golden Spoon. The 28th, next Tuesday, is National Drink Beer Day. (What else one would do with it I do not know. I have read accounts of deep-frying it but would not try it myself.) Some of my sources have tomorrow, the 23rd, being National White Chocolate Day; some have the 23rd being National Chocolate Day, with National White Chocolate Day today, so you’d better eat both kinds on both days just to be on the safe side.

Bargain guide, week beginning September 15th
The 21st, that’s next Tuesday, is the International Banana Festival. One is two Points, two are two Points. In Japan the third Sunday in September – that’s this coming Sunday – is Respect for the Aged Day. And of course, this Sunday is Talk Like A Pirate Day. Arrr.
Stock your freezer with boneless skinless chicken breasts this week.
In the news, the Corn Refiners’ Association is lobbying to have high-fructose corn syrup rebranded as “corn sugar” (I wonder why?); and a TV chef named Martin Blunos has assembled a cheese sandwich involving white-truffle cheddar, sliced quail eggs, century-old balsamic vinegar, and sourdough bread sprinkled with gold dust: total price, $172 (no word on the Points count). And in an entertaining item, The Atlantic has published an article comparing a Chipotle burrito to a Big Mac and arguing that the burrito is higher in fat, sodium, carbohydrate and cholesterol. (A more detailed analysis – not found at the Atlantic article, but available at fooducate.com – reveals that the Big Mac is less than eight ounces of food and usually eaten with fries and possibly a dessert, while the Chipotle burrito – “loaded”, as the one in the article was – weighs in at over a pound and a half and can be two full meals.)
And a professor of nutrition at Kansas State University, Mark Haub, has announced his intention to go on a diet entirely of junk food – Twinkies, sticky buns, powdered doughnuts and the like – to prove that it’s possible to lose weight if you keep your calorie intake below a certain level. He may indeed lose weight. I predict his arteries will not. Which, I suspect, is what he intends to prove: that there’s more to good health than just “losing weight”.

Bargain guide, week beginning September 8th
At one end of the healthiness range, the 13th is “Snack A Pickle Day” – most pickles have a Points count of zero, and they crunch. Enjoy. At the other end, the day after is National Cream Filled Doughnut Day. This second week of September is National Waffle Week and National Biscuits and Gravy Week, but it’s also Vegetarian Awareness Week.
Tomorrow is National Steak au Poivre Day, which can be quite low in Points depending on the steak you choose and how careful you are with the butter.
Courtesy of Consumerist, I’ve found an interesting Salon article exploring the scientific reasons why McDonald’s food is so notably, even disturbingly, resistant to deterioration. (There’s a link to photos of a Happy Meal that appears almost unchanged 137 days after it was purchased. Yummy!)
Also, I ran across a fascinating article about Kellogg’s Fiber Plus breakfast cereal, which is promoted as having “40% of your daily fiber!” as well as fruit and yogurt, and which actually includes – on an “Ingredients” list eighty-three items long – Red #40, Blue #2, Green #3, Blue #1, Red #40 Lake, “nonfat yogurt powder”, and for some reason two separate mentions of “fructooligosaccharides”.
September 8th: National Date Nut Bread Day
September 9th: National Steak au Poivre Day, National Weinerschnitzel Day
September 10th: TV Dinner Day
September 11th: National Hot Cross Buns Day ("I have hot cross buns!" "If you wear a long coat no one will see!")
September 12th: National Chocolate Milkshake Day
September 13th: National Peanut Day, Snack A Pickle Day
September 14th: National Cream Filled Doughnut Day, Eat a Hoagie Day
September 15th: National Linguine Day, National Creme de Menthe Day

Bargain guide, week beginning September 1st
This is the month when we all eagerly anticipate the heat breaking at last. September is – among many other things – Better Breakfast Month, Bourbon Heritage Month (the beverage, not the French royal dynasty), National Chicken Month, National Mushroom Month, National Potato Month (hmm – from those three ingredients one could easily concoct a rather good recipe), and National Organic Harvest Month. It's also National Honey Month, National Biscuit Month, National Papaya Month, National Rice Month, California Wines Month, Ethnic Foods Month, National Cholesterol Awareness Month, Food Allergy Awareness Month, and National Ice-Cream Sandwich Month.
It's also National Apple Month. So is next month. It’s all quite complicated. The 3rd is National Welsh Rarebit Day. The day after is Eat An Extra Dessert Day, which is what your 35 bonus Points are for, so don’t skip it!
And, of course, this Monday is Labor Day – the official close of Barbecue Season, which began on Memorial Day. So anything even remotely grillable – a category which now includes very nearly anything but peas – will be heavily promoted. Loss leaders include soft drinks, chips, pickles, and the less impressive grades of beer. And charcoal.
In the news: the FDA has ruled that the recent law requiring all chain restaurants with more than 20 locations to post calorie counts also applies to other chains – including movie theatres, airplanes (!), trains, grocery store food courts, and convenience stores that sell prepared food.
September 1st: National Cherry Popover Day
September 2nd: National Blueberry Popocile Day
September 3rd: National Welsh Rarebit Day
September 4th: National Eat An Extra Dessert Day, National Macadamia Nut Day
September 5th: National Cheese Pizza Day
September 6th: National Coffee Ice-Cream Day
September 7th: National Acorn Squash Day, National Napoleon Day
September 8th: National Date Nut Bread Day
