I hope you all had a wonderful holiday week! From Fooducate: after a decade of promoting “better-for-you” versions of their products, PepsiCo have announced an intent of focusing again on their “indulgent core businesses” – sodas and salty crunchy things, without a pretense that they're healthy. Chow.com has a video from Poppy Tooker (Louisiana Eats) on how to make “the perfect Jell-O shot”. Everyone else seems to be on vacation, nor can I blame them.
Biggest promotions this week are for party foods, no surprise, but we're also seeing a hint of next week's inevitable cascade of New Year's Resolution healthy-and-weight-loss promos, so this may be a good couple of weeks to stock up.
Today's National Chocolate Day! The day after tomorrow, the 30th, is National Bicarbonate of Soda Day, which seems to be anticipating need by about two days. The 31st, of course, is National Champagne Day. January 1st is Apple Gifting Day, a nice healthy way to start the year, and the 4th is National Spaghetti Day.

Bargain guide, week beginning December 21st
We made it into Wired! Good article in the current issue, also linked at my blog, covering the changes in the program from Points Classic to PointsPlus. Including the PointsPlus Secret Formula:

if that helps you any at all. Personally I found it more useful to buy the calculator.
At Fooducate, a piece on an experiment at Johns Hopkins. Hand-lettered signs were placed in convenience markets, next to the soft-drink coolers, and teenagers' buying habits were recorded. The sign warning that it would take 50 minutes of jogging to burn off the calories in one bottle of soda reduced purchase of sugary sodas by nearly 50%.
From Summer Tomato's links: A study has found that you eat less if the color of your food contrasts with the color of your plate: apparently the contrast makes the serving look larger. Some breakfast cereals have more sugar per serving than a Hostess Twinkie (Darya lists this one as “duh of the week”). And people who exercise actually crave less chocolate than people who sit!
Friday, the 23rd, is National Pfeffernüsse Day; the day after is National Eggnog Day. National Candy Cane Day is not until the 26th. The day after is National Fruit Cake Day, so there may still be time to get your Collin Street order in. And on December 23rd, 1675, King Charles II of England issued a proclamation suppressing coffee houses, on the grounds that “idle and disaffected persons” as well as “many tradesmen and others, do herein misspend much of their time, which might and probably would be employed in and about their Lawful Calling and Affairs”, and that in such places “divers, false, malitious, and scandalous reports are devised and spread abroad to the Defamation of His Majesty's Government, and to the disturbance of the Peace and Quiet of the Realm”. Apparently Restoration England could not get along without coffee: the order was revoked sixteen days later.

December 22nd: National Date Nut Bread Day
December 23rd: National Pfeffernüsse Day
December 24th: National Eggnog Day
December 25th: National Pumpkin Pie Day
December 26th: National Candy Cane Day, National Coffee Percolator Day (1865, patenting of the coffee percolator)
December 27th: National Fruit Cake Day
December 28th: Eat Vegetarian Day, National Chocolate Candy Day; 1886, patenting of the first successful dishwashing machine

Once again, this week's biggest promotions are on baking supplies, party trays, birds ranging from the sizable to the humungous, and extraordinarily large sections of kine and swine.
At Fooducate: a great and ultra-simple recipe for roasted acorn squash (squashes, a bit of butter, a sprinkling of brown sugar: PointsPlus count of only 4 per serving)! Also, in the news: the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Trade Commission are working together to crack down on sellers of HCG diet products.
Chow.com offers an analysis of how it happened that turducken – “an ungodly Frankenbird, a multifowl mash-up with turd in the name” – came to be seen as trendy (Shorter chow.com: “Heck if we know.”), and a decidedly not suitable for workplace viewing video of Vegan Black Metal Chef's Christmas Yule Log Cake.
Serious Eats recommends a recipe for homemade Three Musketeers bars, as well as a report on what happens if you go to Cold Stone Creamery and order an ice-cream with every single mix-in they offer. (“Not something I'd shell $28.90 for again.”) And now that none of us are even slightly hungry any more, Summer Tomato offers “10 Tips for Healthy Entertaining”.
The day after tomorrow is both National Eat What You Want Day and National Chocolate Covered Anything Day, for the benefit of those of us who will indeed eat anything if it's dipped in chocolate. Sunday, the 18th, is National Roast Suckling Pig Day DO NOT GOOGLE FOR PICTURES OF THIS IF YOU ARE AN ANIMAL LOVER AS IT WILL MAKE YOU CRY AS IT DID ME. For a healthier and less emotionally wrenching option, the 19th is National Oatmeal Muffin Day. Add some chopped apple and they will be delicious.

Bargain guide, week beginning December 7th
I must be brief as I'm short on time. Heavy promotions this week on baking supplies and the larger slabs of meat – and, blessedly, fruit and veggie trays.
At Fooducate Andy Bellatti has a fascinating article based on the notion of, in his phrase, “calling off the war on obesity”: “Obesity is too abstract of an 'enemy'.... . What, exactly, does victory look like? A population that is of normal weight? While there are certainly some medical and health risks that accompany obesity, it is possible to be at a 'healthy weight' while subsisting on minimally nutritious foods.” Chow.com has recipes for “an epic Christmas feast”, for “crazy-easy Christmas cookies”, and for some homemade fruitcakes if you're not ordering from Collin Street Bakery which I heartily recommend.
Serious Eats has how to cook a crown roast of pork as well as taste tests for instant mashed potatoes and various brands of eggnog, and Summer Tomato has six tips on how to make desserts worth their caloric cost. (“Resist the piles of cookies, brownies and candies set out around the house. If you do choose to eat one, do not make light of it. Sit down with a chair, table and napkin and enjoy every bite.”)
Next Tuesday, the 13th, is for absolutely no reason I've been able to determine National Ice Cream And Violins Day, so settle in with Itzakh Perlman and Bunny Tracks if it so please you:

Bargain guide, week beginning November 30th
Chow.com, this week, has a recipe for what they describe as “the turducken of cheese balls”. It's a four-pound monstrosity involving a core of “washed-rind semifirm cheese”, a layer of peppered cream cheese, a layer of Spanish sausage, a layer of Manchego, a layer of chopped dried figs, a layer of Emmentaler, a layer of parsley and chives, a layer of cheddar, a layer of chopped Asian pears, a layer of bleu cheese, a layer of walnuts, a layer of goat cheese, and a layer of mixed almonds, pecans, and bacon. They've also got an article describing one cook's attempt to follow a recipe for stuffing a turkey with Twinkies. “The house smelled exactly how you would imagine a house with Twinkie-stuffed poultry in the oven would smell: like a turkey being roasted in a cupcake-scented Yankee Candle.”
From Darya Pino at Summer Tomato, a set of tips on how to eat healthy while traveling. She recommends Mexican restaurants if you're in an airport (“you can almost always get beans, rice, and some kind of vegetable”), with “high-end salads” as a second choice.
And Fooducate suggests an addition to Black Friday and Small-Business Saturday and Cyber Monday: Whole Foods Wednesday! (Did you know that the US is a net importer of fruits and vegetables?)
Will it surprise you to learn that December is both National Eggnog Month and National Fruitcake Month? The 1st is both National Pie Day and Eat a Red Apple Day, and the 3rd is National Apple Pie Day.

Bargain guide, fortnight beginnirng November 16th
The intense promotions have definitely begun: turkeys, other birds, turkeys, hams, beef roasts, turkeys. And of course every other item appertaining to Thanksgiving dinner. Shopping tip: remind yourself that “huge stack of something at the end of an aisle” does not necessarily mean “bargain”.
Not much in the food blog world this week: apparently everyone's too busy shopping and making pies, or something. Fooducate explores the difference between broth and stock (broth is made from meat only, stock from meat and bones both, so stock has the stronger flavor); and a study in Denmark has found that “while adding butter to your diet does increase bad cholesterol levels, cheese does not.” (Truth in advertising: the study was sponsored by the Danish dairy industry.) For the benefit of the vegetarians at the Thanksgiving table, Chow.com offers a stack of vegetarian recipes including one for stuffing served in an acorn squash – that looks tasty and I'm not even a vegetarian.
And, in the vein of our common interest here, I quote Darya Pino of Summer Tomato:
Tomorrow is National Homemade Bread Day (this can be healthy) and National Baklava Day (not so much); the 19th is National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day (yahoo, good old Mountain Dew).
November 16th: National Fast Food Day
November 17th: National Homemade Bread Day, National Baklava Day
November 18th: National Vichyssoise Day,
November 19th: National Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day
November 20th: National Nouveau Beaujolais Day, National Peanut Butter Fudge Day (now there's a combination)
November 21st: National Gingerbread Day, National Stuffing Day
November 22nd: National Cashew Day, National Cranberry Relish Day
November 23rd: National Espresso Day, Eat a Cranberry Day
There may not be a handout next week, as most groceries do not print one the day before Thanksgiving.

Overeating is certainly a possibility when food anxiety is a constant force in your life, but Thanksgiving is a perfect opportunity to start getting over it. Really. It may seem counterintuitive that such a food-forward holiday can be stress free, but let’s not forget that the real point of Thanksgiving isn’t turkey or pie, but being thankful.
[ ... ]
If you care about your health and want to keep your eating under control on Thanksgiving, why not focus your attention on strengthening relationships and spending time with the people you care about? Instead of worrying about yourself and what you want to accomplish, ask people about themselves and discuss mutual interests.
Let food be part of the celebration, but not the purpose of your day.

Bargain guide, week beginning November 9th
Chow.com explains how to make a Thanksgiving dinner for eight for just over a hundred dollars! And their cost estimate is based on “the highest nonsale prices we could find at a Safeway in San Francisco”, which has some of the grocery highest prices in the country. They've also got a very useful series of videos on how to cope with Thanksgiving cooking disasters: underdone turkey, piecrust dough that's glued itself to the counter, sweet potato casserole on fire ...
Darya at Summer Tomato highly recommends a new pedometer, the Up from Jawbone. It's a combination wristband and iPhone (sadly, not iPod) app that tracks steps, meals (it requires you to photograph your meal and also asks you, two hours later, whether you're still satisfied), and just about everything … except Points.
Darya also has a delicious-looking recipe headlined, “How to make Brussels sprouts that aren't gross”. She suggests that the smaller they are the less bitter they are, recommends halving and blanching them to take out what bitterness there is, balances the remaining bitterness with an acid, and adds, “Oh, and did I mention bacon?”
This Saturday, the 12th, is variously reported as “Nation Pizza With the Works Day” and “National Pizza With Everything Day (Except Anchovies)”. Monday is National Guacamole Day – it's easy to make, but if you buy it do not buy the kind in a plastic tub because it is made out of everything that is NOT avocados. And, importantly, the 15th is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day.

Bargain guide, week beginning November 2nd
With Halloween over, the TURKEY PROMOTIONS have started along with equally ardent promotions for baking supplies and ingredients.
At Fooducate there's a great entry about exactly what's in fat-free salad dressings, why they're not worth the money, and why they actually negatively impact the nutritional value of the salad. (Vitamins A, D, E, and K – all significantly present in salad makings – are fat-soluble, not water-soluble, so using a fat-free dressing makes them less available for your system.)
At Chow.com, Harold McGee debunks the idea of searing meat to “seal in the juices”. (It doesn't. But, as he points out, it makes it taste much better.) Their advice columnist treats the question of $6/lb free-range “heritage” turkeys vs. brine-injected 69¢/lb mass-market turkeys. (The first category definitely have more flavor, but may have to be soaked in brine in your refrigerator for two days before cooking. Some people, especially older people, don't even like them: one woman who raises heritage turkeys herself says the taste reminds her mother-in-law of “the horrible old mutton they were forced to eat” during World War II. Also there's the whole $6/lb thing.)
Welcome to November: National Pepper Month (I can't tell whether that's black pepper or capsicum peppers), National Georgia Pecan Month, National Pomegranate Month (sadly those in my back yard are not quite ripe yet), National Peanut Butter Lovers' Month (Y HALO THAR DEBI), and the third and final consecutive National Apple Month. This Friday is National Doughnut Day. For some reason National Doughnut Day is also in July. I am not responsible for this. The 8th is both National Cappuccino Day and National Harvey Wallbanger Day. Do not attempt to use the one to counter the effects of the other. The day after is both Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day and National Scrapple Day. I suppose the two could be combined by a creative and inventive and sufficiently determined cook.

November 2nd: National Deviled Egg Day
November 3rd: National Sandwich Day
November 4th: National Candy Day
November 5th: National Doughnut Day
November 6th: National Nachos Day

Bargain guide, week beginning October 26th
At Chow.com they've got a collection of “recipes for using up leftover chicken”, but they strike me also as good ways of dealing with that WW staple, Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast. There's a chicken taco salad that looks tasty, as well as a Japanese soup that's heavy on the napa cabbage. And in the forums, there's a very serious discussion of whether the different “sections” of a single candy-corn have different flavors.
At Fooducate.com there's a ruthless analysis of Kraft's new “Milk & Granola” bars, which according to the label have “the calcium of an 8oz glass of milk”. They also have 10 grams of sugar per bar – that's 2.5 teaspoons. (You can also get the calcium of an 8oz glass of milk by, you know, drinking milk. What an idea.)
And at Summer Tomato there's a very useful piece on how to prevent, um, gaseousness caused by eating large quantities of vegetables. (Take small bites and chew them well.)
Tomorrow is American Beer Day, not to be confused with National Beer Day which is April 7th or Drink Beer Day which is September 28th. The day after tomorrow is National Chocolate Day and also National Wild Foods Day – don't look like that, if you've ever eaten a blackberry off a bush or caught a fish and eaten it, you've eaten wild food. The 30th is National Candy-Corn Day, and the day after is of course Trick Or Treat For UNICEF Day.

BAGGED-SALAD RECALL EXTENDS TO ARIZONA
According to MSNBC.com, more than 3000 cases of bagged salad products from Taylor Farms have been recalled in fourteen states and Puerto Rico, for possible salmonella contamination. Arizona is one of the states. The recalled items have "best-by" dates from October 18th through the 21st:
They were marketed under the brand names Fresh Selections, HEB, Marketside and Taylor Farms and included bags of Romaine Blend, Asian Salad, Caesar Salad and Spring Mix items.
If you have any such items in your house, please discard them at once. This is a precautionary recall: no illnesses have been reported.
More information can be found at the FDA's website.

Bargain guide, week beginning October 19th
MSNBC reports, as if fully expecting us to be astonished at this information, that grocery prices are rising. Beef prices are up 10% over the past year, pork prices 7.5%. As if to compensate, they offer an article with tips on less-expensive protein sources, including beans-and-rice (a more complete protein than beans alone), eggs, dairy, quinoa, and just eating less meat.
At Chow.com there’s a collection of pumpkin recipes, including a roasted-pumpkin soup that looks quite tasty and has a PointsPlus count of 5 per serving. (Chow.com is also reaching a bit, featuring a recipe for homemade Pixy Stix in such traditional flavors as “black sesame”, “chile tamarind”, and “spruce tip”.)
I also found an interesting piece at Alternet (yeah, I know, but give me a chance) exploring the question, why do we eat – or why are we so commonly persuaded that we should eat – three meals a day? (For much of Western history, “breakfast” was a snack – perhaps bread and beer or watered wine – to literally break one's fast and tide the eater over until dinner, the big midday meal.) The article comes to no real conclusion, just recommending that you go with whichever system – two meals, three meals, three-meals-three-snacks – works for you, while remembering that the food industry makes its profits by persuading you that you’re hungry whether you are or not.
At Summer Tomato, Darya Pino offers “10 Simple Ways to Eat Less Without Noticing”.
Tomorrow, October 20th, is National Brandied Fruit Day – unfortunately it is far too late to start in time, because brandied fruit takes at least a month, but you can still start it for next year. The 23rd is National Canning Day and the birthday of Nicholas Appert, who invented the canning process; the 25th is National Greasy Foods Day, to be honored in the breach rather than the observance. The 25th also commemorates the introduction, in 1955, of the first microwave oven for home use. It was from Tappan and cost $1,295, which would be $10,424.05 today. One hardly imagines it was an instant success.
