Bargain guide, week beginning March 23rd
This Saturday, March 26th, is officially Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! One of my sources is calling it “Gourmet Macaroni and Cheese Day”, and offering for your delectation a concoction involving penne rigate, quartered pecans, two kinds of Cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and truffle oil, which as far as I’m concerned is far more attention than macaroni and cheese merits. For myself, I declare it Do Not Waste Points Day: if you’re going to use Points on something you like, use them on the good stuff, not a cheap replacement.

Lent begins, and so seafood prices are down. This is pleasant for those of us who happen to like seafood: not so much for those who have not that good fortune. Oddly, beef is also under strong promotion. Welcome to March, National Nutrition Month and National Meat-Out Month. March is also National Frozen Food Month, which means we’ll be seeing very good prices on frozen foods all month long. (National Frozen Food Month is one of the comparatively few such periods that have a practical reason for their existence and their timing: food packers want to clear their freezers out and make room for this year’s pack.)
