A couple of interesting articles at Fooducate.com: one exploring whether milk is inherently “good for you” or “bad for you” (filmmaker Shira Lane has made a film, Got the Facts on Milk?, in which she argues that it’s inherently bad and disease-causing for everyone – but then Lane’s opinions may be influenced by her own milk allergy), the other with the blunt title “Bummer – Weight Loss is Not Linear”.
Chow.com has a video on how to make a striped omelet – they do not explain why one would make a striped omelet – and an analysis of the currently popular phenomenon of fast-food oatmeal. It’s healthyyyyyy. Especially with (in the case of Starbucks Perfect Oatmeal with Brown Sugar, Fruit and Nut Medley) that two-and-a-half tablespoons of sugar.
Today was National Eat Outdoors Day. In a place where we’re on our eighth consecutive day of an “excessive heat warning”, this might appropriately be renamed National Are You —ing Kidding Me Day.
Labor Day weekend is, of course, the official end of Barbecue Season. There follows a month’s hiatus before the beginning of Chocolate Season, on October 1st. Any Barbecue Season holiday means heavy promotions on any food that can be cooked on a grill. I am trying to figure out just what foodstuffs are not included in that category other than pudding and possibly cream of wheat.
In anticipation of October, Jelly Belly has introduced a candy-corn-flavored jelly bean.
Tomorrow is the beginning of oyster season (yum), wine season, and National Apple Month. You will be hearing more about National Apple Month. This Saturday is International Bacon Day (!!), National Welsh Rarebit Day, and the birthday of Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, creator of afternoon tea. (Not the same as “high tea”, btw.) Besides being National Apple Month, September is National Breakfast Month, National Mushroom Month, National Chicken Month, National Organic Harvest Month, National Papaya Month, and National Whole Grains Month. Also National Honey Month, National Potato Month, National Rice Month, National Papaya Month, California Wines Month, National Ethnic Foods Month, National Ice-Cream Sandwich Month, National Cholesterol Awareness Month, Food Allergy Awareness Month, and National Bourbon Heritage Month: this last may have rather to do with the Bourbon French kings than with any beverage.
August 31st: National Trail Mix Day, National Eat Outside Day
September 1st: National Cherry Popover Day
September 2nd: National Blueberry Popsicle Day
September 3rd: National Welsh Rarebit Day
September 4th: National Macadamia Nut Day, Eat an Extra Dessert Day
September 5th: National Cheese Pizza Day
September 6th: National Coffee Ice-Cream Day
September 7th: National Acorn Squash Day, National Napoleon Day
Sunday is National Eat An Extra Dessert Day. That’s what your bonus Points are for. One suggestion is the Hungry Girl peanut-butter pie that Debi mentioned this evening, even if it is saddled with the unfortunate name “PB & Yay!”

Bargain guide for the week beginning August 24th and how to sprout lentils
At Chow.com there’s an article on home canning: at Serious Eats, a recipe for a homemade ketchup made out of blueberries rather than tomatoes.
At Fooducate is an informative article on Greek yogurt, how it differs from ordinary yogurt, and why it’s become so popular recently. My only plea is that package designers will not render the word as “GRΣΣK”, which would be pronounced “grssk”.
Also at Fooducate, a new theory about causes of the childhood obesity crisis: kids in public elementary schools get, on average, about a 25-minute lunch break. That’s 25 minutes to use the restroom, wash up (one hopes), get to the cafeteria, stand in line for their meals, eat, and get outdoors for what few minutes of play they can manage. The nutritional “lessons” learned here are a) gulp down your food as fast as you can, and b) grab the things that taste good and eat them first, because if you save your favorites for last you may not have time to eat them.
Whiskey Sour Day is either tomorrow or next Monday: my sources disagree, as they do on National Waffle Day, which is either today or tomorrow. (International Waffle Day is in March. They do this just to annoy me, I know it.) Monday, the 29th, is definitely both National Lemon Juice Day and National More-Herbs-Less-Salt Day: whatever you’re cooking, squirt some lemon juice in there when you add the herbs. It’s tasty and better for you than salt. And one week from today, the 31st, is National Eat Outside Day, so bag up your lunch and find a shady spot.

Since I brought up the issue of lentil sprouts last week, here is how to go about it. This works for mung or other small beans as well, or alfalfa or wheat-berries. I’ve never tried it with millet or quinoa:
First pick the lentils over, at least make a token effort. Use brown lentils, not red.
Take a quart jar and pour in an inch or so of lentils. Fasten a piece of gauzy or meshy cloth across the top: old nylon stockings used to be popular, but if this offends your aesthetic sensibilities get some nylon netting (it’s very cheap in any fabric store). Secure it with a rubber band.
Rinse the lentils thoroughly, pouring the water off. The last time, leave it in, enough to cover them by two or three inches. Leave on the kitchen counter. Rinse them again two or three times a day.
The second day they will have swelled up quite a lot. Rinse again, but pour the water off this time and leave the jar lying on its side. Keep rinsing at least twice a day.
By the fourth day little tips of roots and leaf-shoots should be showing. If they’re not, throw them out, make the rest of the lentils into soup, and next time buy lentils from Sprouts or Whole Foods or Trader Joe or the co-op.
As soon as the tips start to show, they are ready to eat. They need to be cooked: steam them or sauté them. Take out half of the jar’s contents, it will refill itself by the next day.
They are good in scrambled eggs, in soup or stew, or any place you’d use chopped veggies.
If the jar refills too fast, put it in the refrigerator. If the contents start to smell even slightly funky, dispose and start over again.
They are good until they’re two inches long. After that toss them onto the compost pile and they will grow.

Week beginning August 17th
Introductory matter for those to whom I haven’t mentioned it: this blog, and the weekly handout, are entirely my own production. I flip through each week’s supermarket flyers and type up those that strike me as of use, with particular emphasis on the healthy, the low in Points, and the unprocessed or minimally processed. This is not an official WW publication. That said:
At chow.com, there’s an article on how to make your own fruit leather -- out of real fruit, and out of the actual fruit you want to eat, or your kids want to eat. (Did you know that Strawberry Fruit Roll-Ups have absolutely no strawberries in them?) Fresh fruit is still healthier, though, lower in Points and does not glue itself to your teeth.
At Summer Tomato is an excellent article on keeping aware while eating, and how it can help you to actually eat less. (One handy tip: don’t visit a restaurant when you’re starving!) They've got another that I liked as well, on how to transform yourself into a slow eater.
Nabisco have surpassed themselves by producing an object called the Oreo Triple Double: a cookie, a layer of vanilla crème, a cookie, a layer of chocolate crème, and another cookie. According to the official nutritional-information page, this item has a PointsPlus count of 3 per twenty-one-gram “serving” – there are eighteen “servings” in a package, but the package is only thirteen ounces. Thus Nabisco have achieved a new record of sorts: a cookie product in which one serving is less than one cookie.
This Friday, the 19th, is both National Potato Day (remember, potatoes are high in moisture, have a fair amount of fiber, and are actually very good for you if you don’t fry them) and National Hot & Spicy Foods Day. So spice something up. Potatoes, maybe. One week from today is National Waffle Day. There is also an International Waffle Day, which is in March. I do not pretend to understand how this works.
August 17th: National Vanilla Custard Day

Bargain guide, week beginning August 10th
At Fooducate, an article on the top 10 healthy “convenience” foods. (Top of the list: fresh fruit. Next up are bagged salad greens, fish fillets {they take only a moment under the broiler}, whole grains {the author assumes you have a rice cooker}, and yogurt.)
Today is National S’mores Day. I cannot imagine that a single S’more is all that high in Points. Tomorrow is National Raspberry Tart Day. Next Monday, the 15th, is Cupcake Day For The RSPCA – since we’re not on the R side of the Atlantic, donate the price of a cupcake to the ASPCA. The day after, the 16th, is National Rum Day.
August 10th: National S'mores Day, National Banana Split Day
August 11th: National Raspberry Tart Day or National Raspberry Bombe Day -- my sources cannot agree
August 12th: National Toasted Almond Bar Day, National Julienne Fries Day

August 15th: National Lemon Meringue Pie Day, National Bratwurst Day
August 16th: National Rum Day
August 17th: National Vanilla Custard Day
We are in the middle of the second week of August, which is National Apple Week. This is not to be confused with National Apple Month, which rather bafflingly comes in September, October and November. I suppose this says a great deal for the popularity of apples. Or perhaps for the powers of the apple-growers’ lobby.
I should probably mention more often that neither this blog nor the corresponding handout are in any remotest way, shape, form, or fashion official publications of Weight Watchers of America. Not even slightly. Noop.

Noop.

A new metastudy published in the medical journal Circulation shows that people who get even a little bit of moderate exercise, 150 minutes/week (that’s just over 20 minutes/day!), have a markedly lower risk of coronary heart disease than those who don’t. The more the better, of course, but any at all helps. So it really can be just as simple as “Move More!”
