Fooducate this week aim their snark at Pop-Tarts, pointing out that the new Pop-Tarts flavor, “Wildlicious”, is hardly a nutritional bonanza: refined flour, sugars, HFCS, and (as I mention in the comments) prominent illustrations of fruit on the box but less than 4% fruit in the actual item.
Chow.com has a nice selection of recipes for winter produce: a Chinese brisket-and-turnip stew, Savoy cabbage soup, kale-and-mushroom stroganoff, a butternut-squash dish that looks absolutely delicious, and the heartbreaking discovery that while blood oranges (just coming in about now) are PointsPlus-free, a blood orange margarita almost certainly is not. And at Summer Tomato, Darya seems to have fallen entirely into List Mode: this week we have “8 Simple Tips to Avoid Late Night Snacking”, including water, herbal teas, walking, the telephone, and video games (“Though I do not consider the Nintendo Wii a particularly effective form of exercise, one bonus of playing video games is it occupies both of your hands and makes it difficult to eat”).

Bargain guide, week beginning January 18th
Short disclaimer: Not officially connected to or endorsed by Weight Watchers. Just my hobby.
From Fooducate: About two months ago, researchers released the results of a series of studies revealing that an antioxidant called “resveratrol” had a positive effect on metabolism. Now, it turns out that the data might have been cooked, massaged, or even faked. (Null results are boring: “We did a series of studies on reservatrol and it had very little effect” isn't an interesting news story.)
Chow.com has a recipe for making your own kimchi! Serious Eats has a very good piece on guacamole, how to make it, how not to make it (“Ever try pouring fancy balsamic vinegar into your guacamole? Or how roasting your avocado before mashing it? These are things I strongly advise against trying …”), and a few technical tips (“Perfectly ripe avocados are a pain in the a** to find”). And Summer Tomato has a sardonic article on “9 Surefire Ways to Sabotage Your Weight Loss” (pick an inconvenient diet, dramatically restrict your eating, start a hard workout regimen) and a great piece that will be doubly useful for us all, so much so that I'm going to bold it: “10 Tips for Eating Healthy On A Budget”!
The 20th of this month is both National Granola Bar Day and National Coffee Break Day, so have a granola bar with your coffee. The 23rd is National Pie Day, not to be confused with National Pi Day which is March 14th. One week from tonight is Burns Night, for which haggis is the traditional fare. I'm not sure such a thing as a Points-friendly haggis exists. And the 21st, this Saturday, is National Soup Swap Day!

Hostess, a company that shipped 36,000,000 Twinkies last year (not including other items) and had sales in excess of two billion dollars, has just declared bankruptcy.
Per Fooducate, Kellogg's is introducing a new breakfast cereal, “Krave”. It's little hollow things with chocolate filling and possibly the most unappetizing ingredient list I've ever seen: “Chocolate Flavored Filling (sugar, soybean oil, skim milk, cocoa, chocolate, soy lecithin, palm oil, vanilla extract), sugar, whole grain oat flour, whole wheat flour, rice flour, oat fiber, corn bran, contains 2% or less of: brown sugar syrup, salt, palm oil, artificial flavor, mixed tocopherols for freshness, beta carotene for color, annatto color, BHT for freshness.” Notice how “sugar” gets billed twice?
All the foodblogs are emphasizing the New Year “I resolve to eat healthy” material. Chow.com's front page, for instance, is currently featuring homemade veggie chips (they actually look quite tasty … well, except maybe the kale chips), a warm salad of escarole and mushrooms, healthy-cooking pointers, whole-grain recipes, and “superfoods”. Even Serious Eats is doing bean soup. And Summer Tomato follows up last week's post on exercise with one on healthy snacking and another with the winning title, “How To Eat Healthy Without Being A Buzzkill”.
The calendar, however, is not very big on healthy eating. We've got National Fresh-Squeezed Juice Day on the 15th, and International Hot & Spicy Foods Day the day after, but this week also features Peking Duck Day, Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day, Marzipan Day, and Hot Buttered Rum Day. It is, however, still Fat Free Living Month as well as National Slow Cooker Month, National Wheat Bread Month and National Oatmeal Month. And January 15th is also the 93rd anniversary of the Great Boston Molasses Flood.

Bargain guide, week beginning January 4th
To all our new and returning members: welcome! And a brief but important disclaimer: what you are reading is my hobby. I go through each week's supermarket sale flyers and type up what strikes me as being healthy, having a low PointsPlus count, or anything otherwise useful. Not every sale item or promoted item is in here: to the extent I can, I emphasize the “edges of the store”, the less processed items. The point in this case being that this blog, and the handout I give out at the meetings, are not in any way, shape, form or fashion official Weight Watchers publications. Not even remotely. Noop.
That said: Fooducate this week has a list of nine foods to eat in 2012, including sardines (they're cheaper than salmon, do not accumulate mercury in their bodies, and we're not going to run out anytime soon), nuts rather than salted-nut-mix, and homemade granola. They've also got a list of common drinks and their caffeine content – I was startled to learn that my morningly cup of tea has more caffeine than my can of Mountain Dew – and a head-to-head combat comparison between Hamburger Helper and Velveeta Cheesy Skillets. News flash: neither of them is precisely what could be called a nutritional bonanza.
Chow.com has dived head-first into the regular January-resolution thing: they've got healthy chicken recipes, healthy homemade energy bars, a selection of “recipes for healthy cooking”, how to roast vegetables, and a terrific visual guide to how much of various fruits or vegetables makes a serving! (32 grapes are one cup. So are four spears of asparagus – not nearly enough for me – or a quarter of a cauliflower.) Darya Pino, at Summer Tomato, has a very useful list of tips for starting an exercise routine and sticking to it. And even Serious Eats, my favorite super-indulgent food blog, has “9 Light and Delicious Ways to Eat Fruit for Dessert”.
And still on the healthy-eating subject: January is National Oatmeal Month, National Prune Breakfast Month, Fiber Focus Month and National Wheat Bread Month. It's also National Soup Swap Month, so swap some good soup with a friend. This Friday is Bean Day – every reference I can find to this is loaded with baked-bean recipes although Bean Day is actually about finding a bean in the cake – and the day after is Fruitcake Toss Day. I do not invent these.
January 4th: National Spaghetti Day
January 5th: National Whipped Cream Day
January 6th: Bean Day, National Shortbread Day
January 7th: National Tempura Day, Fruitcake Toss Day
January 8th: English Toffee Day
January 9th: National Apricot Day

January 4th: National Spaghetti Day
January 5th: National Whipped Cream Day
January 6th: Bean Day, National Shortbread Day
January 7th: National Tempura Day, Fruitcake Toss Day
January 8th: English Toffee Day
January 9th: National Apricot Day
January 10th: National Bittersweet Chocolate Day
January 11th: Hot Toddy Day, National Milk Day
