Bargain guide, week beginning February 29th

Chow.com has a set of recipes for, I swear I didn't make this up, making your own Girl Scout Cookies.

Darya, at Summer Tomato, has a great article on things to think about before buying a juicer. (They use up huge quantities of produce, for one thing, so you'd better have a big garden or live near a farmer's market. For another, as she points out, juice – even vegetable juice – is “an incredibly efficient way to take in calories”, and more efficient caloric intake is hardly the first thing most of us need.)

Marion Nestle has started a column, “Nutritionist's Notebook”, at Washington Square News, and it's worth reading. Her first column, published a week ago today, is about portion sizes – “Large portions make you eat more”, she says bluntly – and how to deal with them.

HuffPo has a preview of Tracie McMillan's new book, The American Way of Eating. Item: America does not grow enough fruits and vegetables to give every American a balanced diet; to do that, the US acreage devoted to fruit and vegetable crops would have to be doubled. Item: if farm wages were raised by 40%, the average household grocery bill would only go up $16/year. Item: making Hamburger Helper from scratch saves you 69% and only takes one minute longer.

Welcome to March: National Flour Month, National Noodle Month, National Nutrition Month, National Peanut Month, Maple Sugar Month, and National Frozen Food Month. The only ones of these I can explain logically are the last two: this is the time of year for tapping maple trees, and it's also the time of year frozen-food companies want to unload last year's pack to make room for this year's. So frozen foods will likely be seriously marked down all month, even if maple sugar is not. It's also Great American Meat-Out Month, and YumSugar has a collection of phenomenal vegetarian recipes.

Tomorrow is Peanut Butter Lovers' Day (Hi Debi!) and National Fruit Compote Day. These may be combinable: as a non-peanut-butter-lover I have never tried. The 4th is National Pound Cake Day, one of the few foodstuffs to come with a warning label in its name, and the 378th anniversary of the opening of the first tavern in the New England colonies. And the 5th is National Cheese-Doodles Day, which always reminds me of a prank “warning” sticker I once saw: “FUN FOOD – For recreational consumption ONLY. This edible substance contains absolutely no nutritional value.”

EXERCISING MAKES YOU SMARTER.

February 29th: Surf and Turf Day
March 1st: National Peanut Butter Lovers' Day
March 2nd: National Banana Cream Pie Day; 1904, birthday of Dr. Seuss (Theodore Seuss Geisel), author of Green Eggs & Ham and other culinary titles

March 4th: National Pound Cake Day; 1634, Samuel Cole opens the first tavern in Boston
March 5th: National Absinthe Day, National Cheese-Doodle Day; 1910, Momofuku Ando born, inventor of Instant Ramen noodles
March 6th: National Frozen Foods Day, National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day; 1912, debut of the Oreo cookie; 1930, first retail marketing of frozen foods
March 7th: Crown Roast of Pork Day, National Cereal Day; 1897, John Harvey Kellogg serves corn flakes for the first time, to patients in his sanatorium in Battle Creek, Michigan

Bargain guide, week beginning February 22nd

Wow – according to a new report from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, weight loss is a complex and not wholly linear phenomenon. (Ya think?) Cutting a flat number of calories from your intake won't have the same effect as your weight loss goes on: as your metabolism changes, you have to keep making small reductions. Excuse me, but isn't that how Weight Watchers has been operating since the introduction of the original Points plan?

Fooducate updates on “The Incredible Shrinking Candy from Mars”: all Mars “King Size” candy bars are to be discontinued. More precisely, they're to be replaced with a “2ToGo” package, containing two full-size candy bars in a single package. Oh, but it's “resealable”, so you can “save one for later”. Like that's going to happen.

Darya at Summer Tomato has a recipe for “The Tastiest, Easiest, Healthiest Bean Salad on the Planet”, and Yoni Freedhoff at Weighty Matters ruthlessly slams Dr. Oz for shilling a “powerful”, “amazing” raspberry-ketone supplement that might help you to lose all of four pounds … for $700 a year. (Disclaimer: at the time I wrote this I had no idea Dr. Oz would be prominently featured in this week's official minizine!)

Today being Ash Wednesday, we're in for a good six weeks of heavy promotions on every variety of seafood. Mmm, seafood. Crab-stuffed salmon. Oysters on the half shell. Shrimp cocktail. Clams Casino. Scampi … mmm, give me this “fast” any day! (On the other hand, I found a c. 1940 recipe for a “Lenten Loaf” that involved mixing canned salmon with mashed lima beans. Now that's penance.)

The 23rd is both National Banana Bread Day and International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. Call me unappreciative, but I've tried many varieties of dog biscuit and not one measured up to banana bread. The 25th is National Chocolate Covered Peanuts Day, also (speaking of nuts) the birthday of Adelle Davis. The day after is National Pistachio Day, and the 28th is National Chocolate Souffle Day.

February 22nd: National Margarita Day
February 23rd: International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day, National Banana Bread Day
February 24th: National Tortilla Chip Day
February 25th: National Chili Day, National Clam Chowder Day, National Chocolate Covered Peanuts Day
February 26th: National Pistachio Day
February 27th: National Strawberry Day, National Kahlua Day
February 28th: National Chocolate Souffle Day
February 29th: Surf and Turf Day

Bargain guide, week beginning February 15th

Sorry I wasn't able to make this week's meeting: I had a phenomenal migraine all afternoon and evening. Here, anyway, the week's information:

Fooducate this week offer a quick rundown on coconut water (better than Gatorade, not as good as tap water), suggest a method of portion control for homemade cookies, caution that the Jack-in-the-Box 1080-calorie “Bacon Shake” contains absolutely zero bacon, and analyze a new product with the extraordinary name “Nature's Path Love Crunch Premium Organic Granola”. Shorter NPLCPOG: it's “scrumptious”, has a great ingredients list, and every purchase benefits the Bite4Bite food bank program, but eat it as a snack: the nutrition information on the package is not based on the standard 55-gram serving for cereals, but on a 30-gram (just over a quarter-cup) serving.

Chow.com has an extraordinarily mixed batch of recipes for “Making a Healthy Snack”. The “Parmesan-Dill Popcorn” doesn't sound bad, and nor does a Banana Pudding made of yogurt, fresh banana, and honey. I can muster less enthusiasm for “Minted Lentils” (cooked green lentils tossed with olive oil, topped with Greek yogurt and fresh mint) or for the idea of spreading sourdough toast with a mixture of mashed sweet potato and Parmesan cheese. Summer Tomato offers tips on meal-planning without shopping lists (lists are handy, she admits, but not always of use at the farmer's market where you can't be sure what you'll find)

Did you know that 9 out of 10 Americans eat too much salt? Biggest culprit, to my surprise, is bread. And hog farms all over the Midwest are blowing up. It has to do with a foam that builds up atop manure pits – possibly a product of a newly evolved species of bacteria! – and traps methane gas.

February 18th is Drink Wine Day! It's also National Crab-Stuffed Flounder Day, a dish to which I will gladly drink any day of the year. (Mmmmm, flounder and crab.) The day after is National Chocolate Mint Day, to which even the non-aficionadi of seafood will subscribe. And the 16th is the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, in 1933.

And by 2013, all of Mars Company's candy bars are to be downsized to bring them under 250 calories. The current “king-size” bars will be replaced with bags of two or four smaller bars, which will make “sharing or saving a portion for later” easier. (The current Snickers bar is 280 calories; the “king-size” is a truly kingly 510.)

February 15th: International Gumdrop Day
February 16th: National Almond Day; 1933, Prohibition repealed
February 17th: National Cafe au Lait Day, National Indian Pudding Day; Fornacalia (Roman feast of bread ovens); 1876, canned sardines sold in US for the first time
February 18th: Drink Wine Day, National Crab Stuffed Flounder Day; 1478, George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, brother of Edward IV, drowns in a butt of Malmsey which may be why this is Drink Wine Day
February 19th: National Chocolate Mint Day; 1847, survivors of the Donner party rescued; 1906, Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company founded by Will Keith Kellogg; 1913, Cracker Jack starts putting a prize in each box
February 20th: National Cherry Pie Day
February 21st: National Sticky Bun Day; 1931, Alka-Seltzer introduced
February 22nd: National Margarita Day

Bargain guide, week beginning February 8th

Per Fooducate, Wal-Mart is launching a new Front-Of-Pack nutrition labeling system: starting in the Spring, a small assortment of “Great Value” brand products will be decorated with the “Great For You” icon. (The ever-wary Fooducators point out that private-sector initiatives – like this one, or the Food Marketing Institute's “Facts Up Front” scheme, or cereal manufacturers' “Smart Choices” program – could enable food companies to deflect the FDA's efforts to mandate FOP labels based on Institute of Medicine recommendations: “Oh, that's not necessary, Mr/Ms FDA – we already have such labeling!”)

Chow.com has a selection of “Weeknight Dinners that Freeze Well”, including a tasty-looking split-pea-and-veggie soup made in the slow cooker, a fast vegetarian chili, and a vegetable soup recipe that actually includes as an ingredient “2 cups of whatever vegetables you happen to have in the house”.

In the news, UCSF's Robert Lustig quite seriously recommended that sugar should be subject to governmental controls, just as alcohol and tobacco are. (Even Marion Nestle, who strongly advocates food industry regulation, thinks this is going a bit far.)

Valentine's Day is next Tuesday, so this entire week features heavy promotions on anything red or pink, anything heart-shaped, anything with reputed aphrodisiac products, and chocolate.

February is Hot Breakfast Month, and researchers in England have found starting the day with a filling and relatively high-fat meal can boost your metabolism for the rest of the day, so bring on the eggs and sausage. This second week of February is both the Great American Pizza Bake – nutritionally very variable, depending on what you put on your pizza – and National Kraut and Frankfurter Week, which can be very good if you pick the reduced-fat franks. Tomorrow is National Bagels-and-Lox day, and also would be the 103rd birthday of Carmen Miranda, in whose memory eat fruit.

February 8th: National Molasses Bar Day; feast of St. Meingold, patron of bakers
February 9th: Pizza Pie Day, National Bagels and Lox Day; 1894, Hershey's Chocolate Company formed as a subsidiary of Milton H. Hershey's Lancashire Caramel Company; 1909, Carmen Miranda born
February 10th: National Cream Cheese Brownie Day; 1944, birthday of Frances Moore Lappe, author of Diet For a Small Planet
February 11th: National Peppermint Patty Day, Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day; 1963, Julia Child's The French Chef premieres on TV
February 12th: National Plum Pudding Day; 1976, Red Dye No. 2 banned by the FDA, resulting in the 11-year vanishing of red M&Ms although they did not contain this dye
February 13th: National Tortellini Day
February 14th: National Cream Filled Chocolates Day; 1886, California oranges first shipped East by rail
February 15th: International Gumdrop Day

Bargain guide, week beginning February 1st

At Fooducate, in preparation for The Caloric Event Of The Year coming up this Sunday, they have three recipes for snacks that are tasty, healthy, and (important) easy to make! There's one for “Crispy Chickpeas” (drain and rinse a can of chickpeas, roll them in 2 tablespoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of cumin; bake on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes at 400°, stir, bake another 20 minutes. 4 servings, each with a Healthy Oil!), one for a mango-black-bean salsa (link at the blog), and one with the self-explanatory title “Salsamole” (equal parts guacamole and salsa, with a shot of lime juice and a bit of cilantro).

Chow.com has a series of “Dips For Any Chip”: some not quite PointsPlus-friendly (an artichoke dip made with Gruyere), some far better (salsa variants, Greek-yogurt-and-mint, a hummus made of white beans and edamame). Serious Eats has a stack of guacamole variants, ranging from roasted garlic to the improbable bleu-cheese-and-bacon. (I love bleu cheese, I love bacon. In guacamole … no.) And Summer Tomato explores how to break your sugar addiction!

Per Consumerist: beef prices are UP and likely to rise further, due partly to drought in the Plains states, partly to rising corn prices. Ground beef may rise another 4-5% this year. Turkeyburgers, anyone?

This is February. February is Berry Fresh Month, National Cherry Month, National Grapefruit Month, Sweet Potato Month and National Hot Breakfast Month. It's a LOT more things than heart-shaped-red-satin-boxes and the Super Bowl. Lots of healthy things, like Heart Healthy Month and Fiber Focus Month and, this first week of February, Shape Up With Pickles Time (they're tasty, crunchy, and PointsPlus-free).

Friday is Carrot Cake Day. Carrots are zero-Points, so carrot cake must be healthy, right … Right? Well anyway, Saturday is Homemade Soup Day, which can be very healthy. And also Stuffed Mushrooms Day, which depends on what you stuff in them.

February 1st: National Baked Alaska Day; 1960, Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr., and David Richmond sit down at a Woolworth's lunch counter and order coffee
February 2nd: National Heavenly Hash Day; 1880, SS Strathleven arrives in London from Australia with the first successful shipment of frozen mutton
February 3rd: National Carrot Cake Day; 1959, the day the music died
February 4th: National Homemade Soup Day, National Stuffed Mushroom Day; 1930, Frank W. Mars introduces the Snickers bar; 1941, Roy J. Plunkett receives a patent for Teflon
February 5th: National Chocolate Fondue Day, World Nutella Day
February 6th: National Frozen Yogurt Day
February 7th: National Fettuccine Alfredo Day
February 8th: National Molasses Bar Day
