At Serious Eats there's a recipe for grilled asparagus with almond-parsley gremolata, an “almost-pesto” that looks quite tasty. Yoni Freedhoff, whom I'm coming to adore more with each passing post at Weighty Matters, analyzes a “buttery spread” label and ingredients list, its claims of a “delicious buttery taste”, and concludes that butter – or as he puts it, “Frickin' BUTTER!” – isn't bad for you, has the same number of calories, and probably has an even more delicious buttery taste.
Snack-girl analyzes chain restaurant menus and concludes that the appetizer menu is trying to kill us all. (Did you know that one Outback Steakhouse Bloomin' Onion is 1948 calories? June starts the day after tomorrow (are you ready for summer? Neither am I), June being National Dairy Month, National Seafood Month, National Beefsteak Month, National Papaya Month, National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, National Iced Tea Month, National Frozen Yogurt Month, and – bafflingly – Turkey Lovers' Month. Friday is National Doughnut Day, and Saturday the 84th anniversary of Velveeta. The 3rd is National Egg Day, and the 4th is the 78th anniversary of the introduction of the “stackable” shopping cart: Sylvan Goldman invented them for his new “self-service” grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, and then had to hire people to push them around the store and pretend to shop so real shoppers could see how handy they were.
May 30th: National Mint Julep Day, National Macaroon Day
May 31st: Another date for National Macaroon Day
June 1st: National Hazelnut Cake Day
June 2nd: National Chocolate Macaroon Day
June 3rd: National Rocky Road Day, National Egg Day
June 4th: National Frozen Yogurt Day, National Cheese Day, National Cognac Day; festival of Fufluns, Etruscan god of wine, included here just because I love his name. Fufluns. Fufluns.
June 5th: National Gingerbread Day
June 6th: National Applesauce Cake Day; 1933, the first drive-in movie theatre opens, in Camden, New Jersey
