Bargain guide, week beginning June 27th:

Good stuff at Fooducate this week:  an analysis of the “Master Cleanse” diet and other “cleansing” fasts, that promise to help you lose weight fast (yeah, living on 500 calories of lemon juice and maple syrup a day will do that to you), and the beginning of a four-part miniseries on choosing healthy bread:  part 1, part 2, part 3, and now part 4 is up too.

Chow.com has strawberry-basil lemonade, a salad of zucchini mixed with grapes and bell pepper, and a video – at the beginning of National Grilling Month and National Hot Dog Month – on how and why to spiral-cut your hot dogs before grilling them.  And Serious Eats has how to grill that Weight Watchers staple, Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, without turning them “dry, chewy, {and} cardboardy”.  (The first tip given here is “flat breasts”, otherwise phrased as “giving the chicken a nice beating”.)  Sprouted Kitchen has a tasty-looking strawberries-oats-and-yogurt snack;  Snack-Girl has how to make wee little 87-calorie cheesecakes in a muffin tin, as well as a watermelon-and-feta-cheese appetizer I can only describe as “intriguing”.

July begins this week.  As mentioned above, it is  to absolutely no one’s surprise National Grilling Month and National Hot Dog Month, as well as other seasonal things like National Baked Beans Month, National Bison Month (Q:  What’s the difference between a buffalo and a bison?), National Ice-Cream Month, and not National Blueberry Month but very specifically July Belongs to Blueberries Month.  The first week of July is National Canned Luncheon Meat Month (all together now:  “But I don’t like Spam!”), and next Wednesday is of course National Barbecued Spareribs Day, preceded immediately by Eat Beans Day and followed by Apple Turnover Day.  You will have observed that the big promotions this week are for All That Can Be Grilled, rolls upon which to place grilled things, and beer.  Especially beer, the official aromas of Independence Day being grilled meats, beer, and gunpowder.

June 27th:  National Indian Pudding Day, National Orange Blossom Day;  1491, birthday of King Henry VIII.  That's not all him, a lot of it is the houppelande
June 28th:  National Tapioca Day
June 29th:  National Almond Buttercrunch Day;  feast of St. Peter the Apostle, patron of fishermen, bakers, and harvesters
June 30th:  National Ice-Cream Soda Day;  1906, Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act.  If you've read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle you know why
July 1st:  Creative Ice-Cream Flavor Day, National Gingersnap Day
July 2nd:  National Anisette Day
July 3rd:  Eat Beans Day, National Chocolate Wafer Day;  1924, Clarence Birdseye founds the General Seafood Corporation, the beginning of the modern frozen-food industry
July 4th:  National Barbecued Spareribs Day;  1845, Henry David Thoreau moves to Walden Pond

Have a fun and safe Fourth, and please don’t blow anyone up unintentionally.

Bargain guide, week beginning June 20th:

At Chow.com there’s a tasty-looking recipe for grilled salmon with a maple-mustard glaze that wouldn’t increase the PointsPlus count by much, a huge index of recipes for summer fruits and vegetables, a recipe for zucchini noodles (!!), and Supertaster’s review of the by-now-famous PB2!  (Direct quote:  “It’s actually delicious.”)  Supertaster also provides a review of Burger King’s new-and-already-notorious Bacon Sundae, which can be summed up as “For those who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they like.”

Serious Eats gives a wholly undue amount of attention to the Japanese phenomenon of “Matomeruko-Easy Powder”, a substance which makes chewable foods edible by those who have difficulty chewing:  mix the food item with water and the powder, spin them all in the blender, and the result has the taste of the food item but the consistency of Jell-O.  Why someone regarded this as a valid reason to make a Giant Jell-O McDonald’s Hamburger utterly escapes me.

Darya at Summer Tomato explores enjoying vegetables when you grew up detesting the very concept, in an article titled, “I Love You Mom, But You Suck At Cooking Vegetables”:  targeted towards those of us who learned in early childhood it was normal to boil spinach and green beans and broccoli until they were yellow.

Tomorrow is National Peaches and Cream Day:  not too PointsPlus heavy if you just use a trickle of cream.  Similarly, the 25th is National Strawberry Parfait Day:  layer strawberries with fat free yogurt, get a fruit and a milk serving in one parfait dish!  And this date in 1861, Frederick Gowland Hopkins was born:  he’s the one who discovered that it takes more than just a proper balance of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and water to maintain good health.  He wasn’t sure what the “more” might be, but he called them “accessory food factors”.  Today we call them “vitamins”.  His paper, “Feeding experiments illustrating the importance of accessory factors in normal dietaries”, was originally published in the Journal of Physiology in 1912;  if you've having trouble with the link or can't read a PDF file, post a note in Comments and I'll bring a copy to next week's meeting.

Bargain guide, week beginning June 13th:

Fooducate this week comes down hard on the bakery department at Whole Foods Market, where it’s hard to find anything of whole grain.  Note:  the word “flour” in an ingredients list, without a qualifier, means refined wheat flour:  white flour.  So does the phrase “wheat flour”.  If it doesn’t say specifically “whole wheat”, it’s not whole wheat.  (The blogger describes asking a restaurant worker if a particular muffin contained wheat, and being assured it was made only of “sperry blossom flour”.  “Sperry Blossoms” is one of Gold Medal’s brands of wheat flour!)

Fooducate also analyzes what’s in low-fat and fat-free “sour cream”.  At Chow.com there’s a nice how-to on Salade Niçoise, but it’s elicited some controversy in the Comments section for its inclusion of potatoes which according to some commentors is simply Not Done.  Also at Chow.com:  how to grill corn on the cob, how to make your own low-fat salad dressing, and a truly unspeakable recipe for a milkshake made of chocolate ice-cream and beer.

Per Grist, Americans spend twice as much of our budgets on processed food as we did thirty years ago.  Snack Girl has, incredibly, a lower-calorie and lower-PointsPlus recipe for buffalo chicken wings:  a serving is four or five pieces, with a PointsPlus count of SIX!  Restaurant wings are 3 PointsPlus per wing!

To match Chow.com’s “how to grill corn on the cob”, Simply Recipes has how to grill artichokes!  Smitten Kitchen has broccoli fritters, and asparagus with almonds and a yogurt dressing.  And Burger King is introducing, please believe me this was not my idea, a bacon sundae.

This Sunday, the 17th, is National Eat All Your Veggies Day.  You can do that, because they’re PointsPlus-free, but I still say that if vegetables had been intended for human consumption we wouldn’t have to douse them in butter or cheese sauce to disguise their essential vegetality.  The day after, Monday the 18th, is International Picnic Day:  perhaps celebrate it a day early, since Father’s Day would be a great day for a picnic.

June 13th:  Kitchen Klutzes of America Day
June 14th:  National Strawberry Shortcake Day
June 15th:  National Lobster Day, Key West Conch Fritter Day, Potatoe Day (1992, Vice President Dan Quayle incorrectly corrects a student's correct spelling of "potato")
June 16th:  National Fudge Day
June 17th:  Eat All your Veggies Day, National Apple Strudel Day;  Ruth Graves Wakefield, inventor of the chocolate chip cookie, born in 1903
June 18th:  National Cherry Tart Day, International Picnic Day
June 19th:  National Dry Martini Day
June 20th:  National Vanilla Milkshake Day

Bargain guide, week beginning June 6th:

Just in time for National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie day this Saturday, Fooducate has a recipe for 4-PointsPlus-per-serving strawberry rhubarb crisp!  They also analyze the claim on Clif Kids “Fruit Rope”, that each of the less-than-an-ounce snacks is “equivalent to one serving of fruit”.  (Upshot:  consuming “fruit juice concentrate” is NOT the same as eating fruit.)

Chow.com teaches how to steam jimmies at home.  They don't tell where we Arizonans are going to find jimmies (live Maryland blue crabs).  For something with ingredients easier to find, they've got a recipe for sauteed snow peas with shallots:  6 PointsPlus per serving, but you could cut that to 4 by cutting the rather lavish ¼ cup of oil in half.  At Serious Eats they're playing Make Your Own, including chicken tikka masala (yum) and alcoholic gummy-bears (um … yeah).

Summer Tomato's got an entertaining post on how to make healthy meals sound more appetizing:  “A recent study showed that food is more satisfying if it is described as 'tasty' rather than 'healthy',” so when announcing what's for dinner, PILE on those adjectives as if you were composing a restaurant menu:  Farm fresh!  Organic!  Heirloom!  Crisp!  Tender!  Roasted!  Tossed!  Savory!  Warm!  Chilled!  Seared!  Poached!  You might fool your family, and who knows, maybe even yourself.

According to the CDC, fast-food burgers have tripled in size since the 1950s.

The 11th is National Corn On The Cob Day.  Corn on the cob is better than anything.  The 11th is also Royal Hot Dog Day, the anniversary of the day in 1939 when President Franklin D. and Mrs. Roosevelt served hot dogs to the visiting King of England, George VI, and Queen Elizabeth (mother of the current Queen).  The 10th is National Herbs and Spices Day – better for you than salt!  And the 13th, one week from today, is my own personal holiday:  Kitchen Klutzes of America Day.  (It is only in recent years that I have been able to set foot in a kitchen without my friends preparing to alert Poison Control, the fire marshals, and the Environmental Protection Agency.)

June 6th:  National Applesauce Day;  1933, the first drive-in theatre opens in Camden, New Jersey, with room for 400 cars
June 7th:  National Chocolate Ice-Cream Day
June 8th:  National Jelly Filled Doughnuts Day, World Oceans Day (sustainable seafood);  this date in 1985, a three-year-old gelding named Crème Fraiche won the Belmont Stakes, ridden by a jockey named Eddie Maple, which also makes this Crème Fraiche with Maple Day
