At Fooducate, a set of tips on how to handle the possibly overwhelming piles of fresh produce that may even as I type these words be dominating your kitchen counter and refrigerator, and a link to a study in the European Journal of Nutrition which reveals – in far more technical language – that drinking sugared soft drinks decreases your body’s ability to burn fats. Interesting to know, since according to a recent Gallup survey, half of Americans drink at least one glass of soda a day..
Chow.com has a nice set of refreshing things to do with cucumbers – pickles, pitas, margaritas – and a stack of recipes handily labeled “When Salad is the Meal”, also very nice for the time of year when no sane person wants to get within two yards of a stove. (I didn't even know what this week's WW topic would be!) Snack-Girl has “a tofu recipe for tofu haters” and one for making your own sherbet with a blender.
The ongoing continent-wide drought is likely to send grocery prices through the roof. Odd, since I thought they were there already.
Here is the Salad in a Jar!
Last week’s handout and entry said that Crème Brûlée Day was on the 21st. But another of my sources says that the 27th, the day after tomorrow, is Crème Brûlée Day! And of course this Sunday, the 29th, is National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day OF WHICH I CAN LEARN NO MORE than that it is indeed National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day. Some sources speculate that it may have something to do with sacrificing cheese in mouse traps. Beyond that, or how or where it originated … nothing.
July 25th: National Hot Fudge Sundae Day
July 26th: National Coffee Milkshake Day
July 27th: National Crème Brûlée Day, National Scotch Day -- not a combination that would spontaneously occur to me, but I'm sure something can be done with it
July 28th: National Milk Chocolate Day
July 29th: National Lasagne Day, Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day
July 30th: National Cheesecake Day
July 31st: Cotton Candy Day, National Raspberry Cake Day, Jump for Jelly Beans Day
August 1st: National Raspberry Cream Pie Day; Lughnasadh; 1932, the Mars Bar is introduced

Bargain guide, week beginning July 18th:
Very occasional disclaimer: This is my hobby which I do for fun. This is not REMOTELY a profit-making enterprise, nor is it in any way shape form or fashion an official product of Weight Watchers International. It’s just a hobby of mine, which I do for fun, because it is fun and it is my hobby. Which I do for fun. As a hobby.
Fooducate has suggestions about healthy bread; Chow.com has a homemade fruit-fly trap, tips on dealing with an infestation of zucchini (not an infestation in your zucchini, an infestation of zucchini), and how to do corn on the cob in the office. Summer Tomato has a list of ways to make your summer salad more satifying (nuts, avocado … sardines?). To go with Chow.com’s zucchini motif, Simply Recipes has one for pesto-stuffed zucchini, along with a terrifying story about picking every visible zucchini in the garden, going away for four days, and coming home to find the garden filled with what she describes as “baseball bats”, and Sprouted Kitchen offers roasted zucchini enchiladas.
Snack-Girl touches on the shock of beverage calories (McDonald’s new “McCafé Frappé Chocolate Chip” is 530 calories, 24 grams of fat, and 66 grams of sugar for a SMALL!), and provides a recipe for a 2-PointPlus-per-serving breakfast ON A STICK. Yoni Freedhoff at Weighty Matters demands an end to “short-term diet studies” and points up the inescapable fact of the weight-loss struggle: Weight lost through suffering will almost certainly be regained.
Today’s National Caviar Day – you can have mine – and this Saturday, the 21st, is National Junk Food Day which let us honor in the breach rather than the observance!

Bargain guide, week beginning July 11th:
WOW. Please, please be careful of the heat. The fun-loving folks at ThinkGeek did an experiment with packaged cookie dough: they cut it up according to the package directions, arranged the pieces on a cookie sheet, and baked some very good chocolate chip cookies BY LEAVING THE PAN ON THE DASHBOARD OF A CAR. What the temperature was, they can’t be sure: the in-car thermometer, in their phrase, “crapped out” at 157.5°. And they’re in Fairfax, Virginia! (I was going to add a link to this but it turns out you all know about it already.)
Did you know that avocados have more potassium than bananas? More fat, too, more’s the pity, but the highest protein content of any fruit. Fooducate has a great infographic about avocados, including a great guacamole recipe. Chow.com has a pile of “recipes for fresh summer corn”, another of dessert recipes involving summer berries, and a third with the incredibly appealing heading “Cold Dishes For Hot Weather”.
Summer Tomato has a list of “10 Simple Kitchen Tips You Wish Someone Had Told You Earlier”. (The food-safety people will tell you “Don’t chop vegetables on the same cutting board you use for meat”, but no one will warn you “Don’t cut fresh fruit on the same cutting board you use for onions and garlic”.) Simply Recipes has a delicious and ultra-simple fruit salad recipe at 2 PointsPlus per serving.
This Saturday is both Macaroni Day and Grand Marnier Day. Also Bastille Day (ça ira!). The day after, being the third Sunday in July, is Sundae Sunday! It is also St. Swithin’s Day: of St. Swithin I know less than nothing, but of St. Swithin’s Day I’ve been told that whatever weather we get on that day will continue for the next forty days.
And one week from today, the 18th, is National Caviar Day. Did you know that a one-tablespoon serving of caviar has only 40 calories? And one-third of your daily allowance of cholesterol?

Bargain guide, week beginning July 4th:
Sorry for the delay – hope you all had a great Fourth!
Lots of cool stuff this week. At the New York Times (h/t to Darya, at Summer Tomato, for a lot of these), Mark Bittman slams the pernicious notion that “a calorie is a calorie”: “Accept that, and you buy into the contention that consuming 100 calories’ worth of sugar water (like Coke or Gatorade), white bread or French fries is the same as eating 100 calories of broccoli or beans.” He cites the director of the the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center of Boston Children’s Hospital: “If you take three servings of refined carbohydrates and substitute one of fruit, one of beans and one of nuts, you could eliminate 50 percent of diet-related disease in the United States.”
According to Science Daily, kids (and adults!) who cook are readier to make healthy food choices than those who don’t.
