Bargain guide, week beginning August 29th:

From Fooducate this week, the rundown on the “Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act of 2012”, or “Why You See Calorie Listings at Burger King But Not at Seven-Eleven”.  From Chow.com, fully fifty-five recipes involving both sweet and hot peppers (sadly, my research indicates that “Chile-Infused Tequila” does not count as a serving of vegetables), and a handy way to use peanut butter to repair a scratched DVD.  From Summer Tomato, turn your zucchini or other summer squashes into noodles!

According to a new study in the American Journal of Physiology (by way of ScienceDaily.com), “30 minutes of {daily} exercise hard enough to produce a sweat is enough to turn the tide on an unhealthy body mass index” – and 60 minutes accomplished no more than the shorter workout!  Marion Nestle explores the pitfalls of what she calls “nutrifluff” – studies attributing remarkable health benefits to single foods, such as goji berries or dark chocolate or apple peels.  (One of her commenters has a terrific insight:  “People don't love nutrients.  Nobody says 'I love Vitamin C'.  But they do say 'I love a fresh orange'.  People have feelings about food.  They don't have any feelings about nutrients.”)  And at Not Eating Out In NY, a recipe for a 5-PointsPlus-per-BIG-serving roasted tomato and corn soup.

The weight-loss year, at least in the US, has only two seasons.  Grilling Season runs from Memorial Day through Independence Day and right up through Labor Day weekend.  Then there's a hiatus until the first of October, which is the beginning of Chocolate Season.  Chocolate Season extends through the winter and spring right up until Easter;  at that point there is another hiatus before the opening of the next Grilling Season.  And Grilling Season winds up this weekend, so prepare to find heavy promotions (if not necessarily good prices) on anything that can be cooked on a grill, which anymore includes just about everything short of peas.  Or beer, which will be heavily promoted anyway.

Today has been National More Herbs Less Salt Day!  Also National Lemon Juice Day, which goes well with using herbs instead of salt.  September begins this weekend, and with it National Chicken Month, National Mushroom Month, National Honey Month, National Bourbon Heritage Month (I dare not speculate whether this is a celebration of the beverage or the French monarchy), Whole Grains Month, and National Organic Harvest Month.

And National Apple Month.  We will hear more of this.

August 29th:  National Lemon Juice Day, National More Herbs Less Salt Day, National Chop Suey Day
August 30th:  National Toasted Marshmallow Day
August 31st:  Eat Outside Day, National Trail Mix Day
September 1st:  National Cherry Popover Day;  beginning of Wine Season and Oyster Season
September 2nd:  National Blueberry Popsicle Day
September 3rd:  National Welsh Rarebit Day;  birthday of Anna, Duchess of Bedford, creator of "afternoon tea" (not to be confused with "high tea")
September 4th:  National Macadamia Nut Day, Eat an Extra Dessert Day (and why not?  They are your bonus Points to spend)
September 5th:  National Cheese Pizza Day

Bargain guide, week beginning August 22nd:

Occasional disclaimer:  Mine not WW’s.  Not a profit-making venture.

Chow.com, in its flawless sense of seasonality, has a pile of “Healthy Grilling Recipes” (mmm, chicken with a chipotle-nectarine barbecue sauce!  Pineapple-shrimp-kebabs!) and another of delicious-looking melon recipes perfect for melon time (including an ice-pop recipe involving chunks of watermelon soaked in vodka and Chambord).  Family Kitchen has a nice set of freezer-bag-friendly crockpot recipes.

Darya at Summer Tomato explores “10 Reasons to Never Eat Free Food”.  A new study from the Department of Psychology right here at ASU shows that cutting food into smaller pieces may be linked to eating less!  Not just smaller portion sizes, but things like cutting the same-size bagel into four pieces.  This goes well with Darya’s “10 Simple Ways to Eat Less Without Noticing”.

National Whiskey Sour Day is either the 25th (this Saturday) or the 29th (one week from today).  To be on the safe side, celebrate both.

August 22nd:  National Pecan Torte Day, Eat a Peach Day
August 23rd:  National Spongecake Day
August 24th:  National Waffle Day, National Peach Pie Day
August 25th:  National Banana Split Day, National Waffle Day
August 26th:  National Cherry Popsicle Day
August 27th:  National Pots de Crème Day, Banana Lovers' Day
August 28th:  National Cherry Turnover Day
August 29th:  More Herbs, Less Salt Day, National Chop Suey Day (supposedly invented this date in 1896, in New York), National Lemon Juice Day

Here's the article Pam mentioned at tonight's meeting:  Is Sitting Lethal?

And, to top all off, the recipe for the now-famous (tarata tarata tarata tataaa) Weight Watcher Friendly Piña Colada!

2 cups flaked sweetened coconut
1 (12-oz) can evaporated fat-free milk
2 cups cubed fresh pineapple
2 1/2 cups ice cubes
3/4 cup gold rum
1/4 cup pineapple juice
2 T light agave nectar
8 fresh pineapple slices

Combine 2 cups coconut and evaporated millk in a medium saucepan over medium heat, and cook until tiny bubbles form atround edge (do not boil), about 7 minutes.  Remove from heat.  Cover and chill at least 4 hours or up to overnight.

Arrange pineapple in a single layer on a baking sheet;  freeze at least 1 hour or until firm.

Strain coconut mixture through a sieve over a medium bowl, pressing coconut with the back of a spoon to remove as much milk as possible.  Discard solids.

Combine pineapple, ice cubes, rum juice, and agave nectar in a blender;  process mixture until smooth.  Add milk mixture, and process until smooth.  Serve with pineapple slices.

Makes 8 (?) servings, estimates 4 PointsPlus per serving.

Bargain guide, week beginning August 15th:

I am so sorry about not getting the blog updated last week!  Somehow it just completely slipped my mind until Monday, at which point it seemed a bit superfluous.

Chow.com has an assortment of eggplant recipes, some potentially low in fat (eggplant soup, eggplant pickle, charred eggplant salad) and a delicious (and visually stunning) collection of grilled-summer-fruit recipes!  Serious Eats has a fairly technical but still interesting exploration of exactly why barbecued chicken does not count as barbecue, and an intimidatingly complete taste-test of all of IKEA’s packaged food.  “There were some winners, some losers, and some fish pastes that come in toothpaste tubes.”

Darya Pino, at Summer Tomato, explores whether “That’s the greatest invention since sliced bread!” is really such a great comparison (Hint:  no).  Simply Recipes provides a couple of good-looking salads, one of green beans with basil and balsamic vinegar, the other a caprese (tomato, basil, mozzarella) tossed with grilled sweet corn!  And Snack-Girl explores the latest version of PointsPlus.

The 16th is National Rum Day.  I’ll drink to that.  Saturday is National Soft Ice-Cream Day – Golden Spoon counts!  And next Wednesday is Eat A Peach Day (do I dare?)

And August 15th would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday.  All hail the immortal Julia, who flipped a potato pancake onto the table, put it back in the pan, said directly to the camera “There’s no one in the kitchen but you!”, and kept going.  Julia Child invented shark repellentJULIA CHILD INVENTED SHARK REPELLENT.

August 15th:  National Lemon Meringue Pie Day;  Julia Child born, 1912
August 16th:  National Rum Day, National Bratwurst Day
August 17th:  National Vanilla Custard Day
August 18th:  National Ice-Cream Pie Day
August 19th:  National Soft Ice-Cream Day, National Potato Day, National Hot & Spicy Foods Day (And once again I deplore the use of "spicy" as a synonym for "laden with hot chilies":  ginger and cumin and cinnamon are all spices)
August 20th:  National Lemonade Day, National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day;  feast of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, patron of beekeepers.
August 21st:  National Spumoni Day;  feast of St Bernard Tolomeo, patron of olive growers
August 22nd:  National Pecan Torte Day, Eat a Peach Day

Bargain guide, week beginning August 1st:

For some reason that utterly escapes me, this is August.

In a convenient follow-up to last week’s stack of main-dish salads, Chow.com is this week offering a list of side salad recipes:  two with couscous, one with quinoa, one with tomatoes and sweet corn, one of grilled radicchio with Portobello mushrooms, and a fauxtato salad made of kohlrabi of all things, among many others.  They’ve also got a handy collection of things to do with bonelessskinlesschickenbreast when you’re completely burned out on Weight Watchers and never again in your life want to SEE another bonelessskinlesschickenbreast, and a video on making your own “easy quick pickles” out of the current bounty of summer veg.  And at Summer Tomato, there’s a startlingly good (I’ve tried it) recipe for seasoned roasted cauliflower.  Worth noting for when the season changes and we’re all willing to look at our ovens again.

Jane Mountain, at Grist, takes on what she bluntly calls “fake health foods”:  vitamin waters, granola (“loaded with sugar and fat”), anything labeled “enriched”, the phrase “made with whole grains”, or weasel-wording such as “Helps Maintain _____” or “May Help _____”.  Snack Girl reviews gluten-free chips (saddled with such unfortunate names as “Plentils”), and teaches how to make your own baba ganoush with peanut butter instead of tahini if it so please you.

August.  Today’s Lammas Day, the year’s first harvest festival on the old calendar.  Besides being (at least here in Arizona) a month to be endured, August is National Peach Month, National Sandwich Month, National Panin Month (some overlap there, I think) and National Watermelon Month.  Fitly, the 3rd – the day after tomorrow – is National Watermelon Day.  It is also Grab Some Nuts Day upon which I shall forbear to comment.  And the 8th, one week from today – I note this to give you time to prepare – is Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Night.  If you have ever grown zucchini you understand this perfectly:

August 1st:  National Raspberry Cream Pie Day
August 2nd:  National Ice-Cream Sandwich Day
August 3rd:  National Watermelon Day, Grab Some Nuts Day
August 4th:  National Lasagne Day, National Champagne Day, National Chocolate Chip Day
August 5th:  National Waffle Day, National Oyster Day
August 6th:  National Root Beer Float Day
August 7th:  National Raspberries In Cream Day
August 8th:  National Frozen Custard Day, Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night
