Apologies for missing last night's meeting and for the absence of a post here: my housemate's in hospital. Nothing terrible, just an unusually severe asthma attack, but they want to keep her there for a day or so and I never got to bed last night.
I hope to get the grocery prices, at least, typed up and posted by tonight.
Thank you for your patience.

Bargain guide, week beginning September 19th:
Fooducate touches whether honey is really healthier than sugar (debatable: honey is denser, so has fewer calories per gram, and does have some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but can harbor the Clostridium botulinum bacterium and so shouldn’t be given to babies; also neither of them is precisely the ideal choice as a weight-loss foodstuff) and lists top fruits and vegetables by water content. Darya Pino, at Summer Tomato, lists five things to think about before making a possibly-less-than-wise food choice, and provides a perfectly simple roasted delicata squash recipe.
Yoni Freedhoff, at Weighty Matters, explores exactly what it means to “cheat” on one’s diet, and suggests that brown-bagging your lunch can help with weight management: “I also have what I call a ‘go-to easy lunch’ which is the lunch I can assemble in less than 30 seconds if I forgot to put one together the night before. It consists of two slices of whole grain bread, 30-45g {1 to 1.5 oz} of cheese, a tomato, an apple, and an orange. It’s far from gourmet, but it does the job.” One of his readers points out that even if a brown-bag lunch is high in calories, you know what you’re eating!
And Beef Products Inc, the makers of “pink slime” – or as they would decidedly prefer it be called, “lean finely textured beef” – are suing pretty much everyone who’s ever called it “pink slime”, including ABC, Diane Sawyer, Jim Avila, the former USDA employee who coined the name “pink slime”, a whistleblowing former employee of their own, and probably me now that I’ve called it “pink slime” too. (Don’t even bother, BPI, I make no money from this flyer.)

Bargain guide, week beginning September 12th:
Fooducate takes on whether brown sugar is “better” for you than white sugar (it’s not: commercial brown sugar is white sugar with some molasses added to it) and whether taking drugstore B-vitamin supplements will provide you with endless boundless energy (no, but getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet might).
Chow.com gives us an easy oatmeal-apple crisp, a tall stack of chicken recipes (good timing as chicken is cheap this week), a video advocating hot-air popcorn poppers (“It only costs around twenty bucks, and if you eat around three bags of microwave popcorn per week, it will have paid for itself in about two months”), and things to do with cherry tomatoes. Serious Eats has Rosh Hashanah sweets, DIY Greek yogurt, and, may God help us all, a bacon praline. And from Simply Recipes, a cod-and-tomatoes recipe that looks appetizing. (When I added it to the handout, I did not realize it called for a quarter-cup of olive oil: it might be possible to reduce that, and if you cut it in half that's still one Healthy Oil per serving.)
Darya Pino, at Summer Tomato, reposts on how to burn more calories without breaking a sweat, and how to learn to like foods you don’t.
AJ's Fine Foods currently has both lychees and rambutan.
Tomorrow (the 13th) is Snack A Pickle Time, and pickles are PointsPlus-free. The day after is National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day, and they are decidedly not, so I think I’ll have another pickle instead. Or since it’s also Eat a Hoagie Day, one of those – piled high with tasty veggies.
September 12th: National Chocolate Milkshake Day
September 13th: National Peanut Day, Snack A Pickle Time (I did not make that name up), International Chocolate Day, Fortune Cookie Day
September 14th: Eat a Hoagie Day, National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day; 1955, Little Richard records "Tutti Frutti" (aw rootie!)
September 15th: National Linguine Day; 1981, the USDA announces that ketchup can be counted as a vegetable in the national school lunch program. This had repercussions.
September 16th: National Guacamole Day
September 17th: National Apple Dumpling Day, Halfway To St. Patrick's Day Day
September 18th: National Cheeseburger Day
September 19th: National Butterscotch Pudding Day

Bargain guide, week beginning September 5th:
Grilling Season is over but the grilling goes on, as you know perfectly well if you’ve tried to walk from your house to your mailbox in bare feet. Chow.com has a set of grilled-seafood recipes, as well as a tall stack of apple recipes, just in time for the new crop just moving into stores. (The first of these is for a stunningly unseasonal spiked wassail, but it gets better.)
A study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics finds that the key to long-term weight loss may lie in fresh fruits and veggies:
From Serious Eats, a new take on an old idea: instead of pasta with a long-simmered tomato sauce, they serve it up with a fresh-tomato vinaigrette. From Simply Recipes a quinoa salad with black beans, corn, and tomatoes.
The upcoming second week of September will be National Vegetarian Awareness Week, or if you prefer, National Biscuits-and-Gravy Week. (Actually it’s both.) The day after tomorrow is National Acorn Squash Day: cut two in half, scoop out the seeds, spread with just a teaspoon of butter to each piece, sprinkle with a spoonful of brown sugar, roast at 400°F for an hour. Four servings, each just a couple of PointsPlus which you have probably already worked off cutting those damn things in half.
September 5th: National Cheese Pizza Day
September 6th: National Coffee Ice-Cream Day
September 7th: National Acorn Squash Day, National Napoleon Day (the pastry), Salami Day, New England Apple Day; yesterday was National Fight Procrastination Day
September 8th: National Date Nut Bread Day
September 9th: Weinerschnitzel Day, National Steak au Poivre Day; "Colonel" Harland Sanders born, 1890
September 10th: TV Dinner Day (why this date I do not know as they were introduced on April 6th, 1954)
September 11th: National Hot Cross Buns Day ("I have hot cross buns!" "Wear a long coat and they won't show!")
September 12th: National Chocolate Milkshake Day

A study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics finds that the key to long-term weight loss may lie in fresh fruits and veggies:
“People are so motivated when they start a weight-loss program. You can say, ‘I’m never going to eat another piece of pie,’ and you see the pounds coming off,” Bethany Barone Gibbs, the lead investigator, said in a statement. “Eating fruits and vegetables may not make as big a difference in your caloric intake. But that small change can build up and give you a better long-term result, because it’s not as hard to do as giving up French fries forever.”
From Serious Eats, a new take on an old idea: instead of pasta with a long-simmered tomato sauce, they serve it up with a fresh-tomato vinaigrette. From Simply Recipes a quinoa salad with black beans, corn, and tomatoes.
