At Fooducate.com, we're reminded that today is Food Day, “a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.” Chow.com has a video on things to do with pressure cookers (they don't explode any more, honest). Summer Tomato provides a very useful list of “9 Tricks to Make Halloween a Treat”, whether you're celebrating with kids or adults, including “Eat what you want, but not any more than that” and “Have a healthy, satisfying dinner”. (As Darya points out, “You would be surprised how easy it is to skip the third mini-Snickers if you are not hungry.”) Andrew Weil cites a study on weight loss among menopausal and post-menopausal women, which I'm going to mention even though I'm surely the only one of those at our meeting, because the study found that “the women who successfully lost weight … the winning strategy was replacing meats and cheeses in the diet with fruits and vegetables.”
Recipes! Smitten Kitchen provides a “Butternut Squash Salad with Farro and Pepitas”. Simply Recipes has a stir-fry consisting primarily of celery which might be good if you're into celery qua celery (I'm not). And Snack Girl has an odd but quite good dip of garbanzo beans and spinach: it sounds a bit like hummus (“it has a mediterranean hummus thing going on but it is lighter than regular hummus because it doesn’t contain nut butter”) and looks extraordinarily green.
Tomorrow is National Greasy Foods Day, which let us honor in the breach rather than the observance. (I have not the remotest idea who came up with the idea of a Greasy Foods Day or why.) The 27th is American Beer Day, not to be confused with National Beer Day which was in September or New Beer's Eve which is in April. The 28th is Wild Foods Day – don't look at me that way, if you've ever picked a blackberry off a bush you've eaten wild food. And of course the day before Halloween is Candy Corn Day. I have the good fortune not to care much for candy corn but if you do your bonus PointsPlus are yours to spend.
October 24th: National Bologna Day, Feast of Good & Plenty; 1955, the Tappan Stove Company introduces the first microwave oven for home use. It costs about $1300, which would be roughly $11,000 today

Bargain guide, week beginning October 17th:
Chow.com is full of information this week: white chicken chili (both faster and healthier than the kind with beef), what sous-vide cooking is and how to do it, what to do with a Cornish game hen, and a celebration of the Arkansas Black apple. (I haven't seen them here yet but you never know. Keep an eye out at AJ's.)
From Darya at Summer Tomato, a list of “11 Proven Ways to Get Kids to Eat More Vegetables” some of which might work on adults too. And after that's been a success, she's got an article on how prevent or remedy veggie-induced, um, how shall I put this, gaseousness. At Nutrition Over Easy, there's a well-timed “Halloween Survival Guide” for how to contain the holiday's damage potential while acknowledging that a candy-free Halloween is one of those Not Gonna Happen things. Grist.com has an article on how portion sizes (and portion eaters) have swelled over the past few decades: from 1982 to 2002, the average pizza slice grew 70% in calories and the average chocolate chip cookie's calorie count quadrupled.
Recipes! Smitten Kitchen does pancetta-white-bean-and-chard pot pies, and Snack Girl has mini Reuben sandwiches and a set of pumpkin recipes. Certainly healthier than the culinary obscenities from Buzzfeed via Grist: “11 Ways To Cook Bacon That Will Probably Kill You”. Give them credit for honesty at least. (Most of the recipes, if I may call them that, involve as well varying but large quantities of beef, egg, cheese, sausage, and in one memorable case Jack Daniels. THESE ARE NOT WW-FRIENDLY CONCOCTIONS AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM. No. God, no.)
Food holidays! The 20th is Brandied Fruit Day – too late to start it now, but you're just in time for Brandied Fruit Day 2013. The day after, the 21st, is Caramel Apple Day. Plenty of apple and not too much caramel and you'll be good. The 20th is the birthday of Nicholas Appert, who invented food canning for Napoleon's armies. Napoleon is gone, but canning is still around. And the 17th is the 50th birthday of Evander Holyfield, remembered for providing Mike Tyson an hors d'oeuvre back in 1997.
Superstition Ranch Market has HoneyCrisp apples for $1.49/lb. Fry's is already promoting turkeys. God help us all.

Bargain guide, week beginning October 10th:
Lots at Chow.com: cutting back on salt, saving a burnt pot of soup (just in time for soup season), autumnal salad recipes, other fall-ingredient recipes including a delicious-looking seven-veg soup, and a video review of Green Giant “Seasoned Steamers” veggie sides.
From Darya at Summer Tomato, the single most important thing on a food label: the ingredients list. “Real food is made from real ingredients, things you should recognize. Real food is not made with unpronounceable chemicals, dough conditioners, preservatives, or 14 different kinds of sugar. Why does Wonder Bread contain Datem and/or Azodicarbonamide? Because its manufacturers want it to have a shelf life that extends beyond the apocalypse. That way when the zombies run out of brains to eat they can still buy Wonder Bread.”
Per Andrew Weil, stair climbing (on real stairs) is a great workout and going up is less stressful on your knees than going down. So walk up, take the elevator down. From Grist, menhaden and blue mussels are back in Long Island Sound after years of being polluted out! Smitten Kitchen has a recipe for homemade chicken noodle soup – she vocally scorns “delis that keep a batch of soup at a low simmer 24/7, until the noodles are gummy and the bits of chicken taste like death itself”, recipes that start with canned chicken broth, and the very idea of cooking a chicken and then discarding the meat. Snack Girl makes healthier caramel apples. (The trick is to use less caramel.) And Sprouted Kitchen has a butter-lettuce salad with honey-and-tahini dressing which sounds intriguing.
And of course there are always food holidays. This Sunday, the 14th, is National Chocolate Covered Insects Day. You can have mine. No, honest, I'm fine, thank you anyway. The day after is simultaneously Roast Pheasant Day, Mushroom Day, and Chicken Cacciatore Day. The 17th, one week from today, is for absolutely no reason I have been able to determine Four Prunes Day.
And the day after tomorrow, October 12th, is the birthday of WW's very own Jean Nidetch.

Bargain guide, week beginning October 3rd:
I'm afraid I won't be able to make this week's meeting either, but at least I'm managing to update the blog. Sorry about last week.
So, what's happening in food this week? At Fooducate, information on why food manufacturers still use so much high-fructose corn syrup when people are objecting to it more and more; a two-parter on “Corn Syrup's Secret Labeling Trick” that means a substance that's essentially all sugar need not be listed as part of a food's sugar content; and a set of healthy-eating tips for families with kids (some of which are useful even for those of us without).
Chow.com's “Chow Tips” teaches us all how to carbonate grapes! Personally I like my grapes just fine uncarbonated, but if you care to try carbonating them (or any other fruit) and have a whipping syphon by all means go for it. Also from Chow.com a set of autumnal soup recipes which will no doubt prove invaluable as soon as the temperatures drop below 90°, a smaller collection of chili recipes (“From Chicken to Beef to Vegan”), and Supertaster's taste test of fake bacons (in preparation for the impending baconpocalypse).
Darya Pino, at Summer Tomato, gives “10 Simple Ways to Eat Less Without Noticing”, how to eat healthy even if you haven't access to a farmers' market, and MYO Muesli! Mark Bittman fills us in on Safeway's new skipjack tuna – responsibly caught, without endangering other sea life, and no more expensive than other kinds of tuna. Grist's Umbra explores whether microwaving veggies really does deprive them of nutrients. And from Simply Recipes, a super-fast-super-easy recipe for miso glazed salmon!
Welcome to October, which is among many other things National Cookie Month, Spinach Lovers' Month, National Tomato Month, Popcorn Poppin' Month, Eat Country Ham Month, National Pretzel Month, National Seafood Month (insert “sea food diet” jokes here), National Apple Month again, Vegetarian Awareness Month, and National Pickled Peppers Month. (Peter Piper, by the way, could not have possibly picked a peck of pickled peppers because peppers are pickled post-picking.)
October 3rd: National Caramel Custard Day
October 4th: National Taco Day, National Vodka Day; 1582, Gregorian Calendar Adjustment (in most European countries, this date in 1582 was followed by October 15th)
October 5th: National Apple Betty Day; 1902, Ray Kroc born
October 6th: National Noodle Day
October 7th: National Frappe Day
October 8th: National Fluffernutter Day, National Pierogies Day; 1871, the Great Chicago Fire broke out (Mrs. O'Leary's cow was later exonerated); 1919, the Volstead Act passed
October 9th: National Dessert Day, Moldy Cheese Day, National Submarine/Hoagie/Hero/Grinder Day
October 10th: National Angel Food Cake Day

(I had a flyer for WinCo, the new East Mesa supermarket, and will add the information as soon as I find it unless the dogs ate it.)
