Bargain guide, week beginning January 30th:

Yoni Freedhoff, at Weighty Matters, points to a new study on meal frequency which seems to indicate that small frequent meals (as distinguished from fewer substantial meals) may help to decrease energy intake in some groups of people.  Freedhoff, with that clarity of vision that has made me so fond of his blog, points out that the undeniably best plan – six small meals, three large ones, intermittent fasting – is whichever one works best for you.

Dr. Freedhoff, who's Canadian, is also quoted in a piece at HuffPost Canada about the aura of healthy that surrounds fruit juice.  We tend to perceive fruit juice as being good for us – after all, it's fruit, right?  But in its most basic terms it's actually “sugar water with vitamins and minerals”, providing four to five teaspoons of sugar per eight-ounce glass.  Drink water and eat fruit.

Recipes!  Chow.com's going fairly heavily into the whole Foodball Game thing (honestly that was a typo but too perfect to rectify), including chicken wing recipes and eighteen different ways to nacho.  Also, for absolutely no reason I've been able to determine, how to make something resembling bacon out of I swear I could not make this up fish skin.  Sprouted Kitchen offers a salad of winter greens and quinoa, and bringing us inevitably back to the isn't-there-some-sporting-event-this-weekend? thing, Darya Pino at Summer Tomato has “5 Classic Super Bowl Foods That Are Surprisingly Healthy”;  Snack Girl has her own set of “Top Healthy Super Bowl Snacks” as well as a fast and tasty three-layer bean dip (“I believe these dips usually have five layers, but who needs five if three tastes good?”);  and Simply Recipes has an artichoke-lemon dip that I think I could live with.  Or possibly on.

February is, besides being the official month of heart-shaped red satin candy boxes, Berry Fresh Month, National Fiber Focus Month, National Grapefruit Month, Potato Lovers' Month, National Heart Healthy Month, National Sweet Potato Month, and National Hot Breakfast Month and that's only touching on the healthier topics.  The first week in February is Shape Up With Pickles Time – don't forget, most pickles are PointsPlus-free!

We all know what Sunday is.  February 4th is National Stuffed Mushroom Day, variably healthy depending on what one chooses to stuff into them;  and one week from today, the 6th, besides being National Frozen Yogurt Day (all hail Golden Spoon!) is National Chopsticks Day which could be terrifically weight-loss-friendly if you're as completely uncoordinated with chopsticks as I am.  (I know, I know, but I can hold a knitting needle in each hand which is not permissible with chopsticks.)

January 30th:  National Croissant Day
January 31st:  National Brandy Alexander Day
February 1st:  National Baked Alaska Day, Bubble Gum Day;  feast of St. Brigid of Ireland, patron of cattle, chicken farmers, and dairymaids;  1960, Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair Jr. (later known as Jibreek Khazan), and David Richmond take seats and order coffee at the Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina
February 2nd:  Heavenly Hash Day, California Kiwifruit Day
February 3rd:  National Carrot Cake Day;  Setsubun;  1930, Frank W. Mars introduces the Snickers bar;  1941, Teflon patented;  1946, birthday of Dan Quayle, popularizer of the potatoe

Bargain guide, week beginning January 23rd:

Apology for the apology -- the previous (now deleted) posting was in error.  I'm going to Nevada tomorrow, not today, and so am preparing this posting and the handout and will be at tonight's meeting.

Fooducate has an interesting piece on “America's protein addiction”:  introductions of foods and beverages claimed to be “high-protein” are three times higher in the US than anywhere else in the world.  And Americans hardly need to increase our protein intake.  Unless you're an endurance athlete, you need about 800 milligrams – 0.8 of a gram – of protein for every kilo of your body weight per day. Most people get more than that, many substantially more.  The point being that unless you're training for the Phoenix Marathon, you probably don't need to significantly supplement your protein intake.

News:  the Federal Trade Commission has just ruled that POM Wonderful has been making deceptive claims for the benefits of its pomegranate-juice products and must stop.  Specifically, POM Wonderful may no longer claim that “consumption of certain doses of Challenged POM Products treats, prevents or reduces the risk of heart disease, prostate cancer, or erectile dysfunction”.

A new study reports that watching The Biggest Loser actually discourages people from taking part in exercise.  It's not hard to figure out why:  on the show exercise is routinely depicted as an exquisitely unpleasant, physically painful ordeal.  Or as Yoni Freedhoff puts it, “By my count during the first week of this season's The Biggest Loser, three contestants lost consciousness, two threw up, one suffered a stress fracture in their knee and a thirteen year old boy fractured his foot.  Watching that - who wouldn't want to hit the gym?”

Recipes!  Chow.com has a set of “Salad Recipes that Make the Meal”, one of inspired dishes to make using “boring winter produce”, and a winter-fruit salad dressed with lime and ginger.  That and a blood-orange margarita should tide you over until fresh-produce season.  Smitten Kitchen has a lentil-sausage soup that looks delicious.  And Snack Girl has tips for homemade-cookie-baking portion control (mix up the cookie dough and freeze it in an ice-cube tray), how to exercise without noticing, and homemade cheese crackers.

Today's National Pie Day.  Do not confuse with National Pi Day which is in March.  Friday is Burns Night:  sadly haggis is difficult to obtain in the US, so you may have to settle for uisge beatha.

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning January 16th:

An interesting article at Salon.com about how the physical experience of food – what the author calls “playing with your food” – can influence appetite.  And from Fooducate, something else to figure into the ever-challenging, not to say fraught, topic of “serving sizes”:  density.  A half-cup serving of Grape-Nuts cereal is 58 grams – two ounces.  A 3/4-cup serving of Grape-Nuts Flakes is 29 grams, barely over an ounce.

Recipes!  Chow.com has easy roasted or baked chicken recipes (great for the time of year when we Arizonans are actually willing to turn the oven on, as well as for those nights when you're thinking “If I have to deal with one more damn boneless skinless chicken breast … ”) and six ideas for healthier homemade pizza.  And Chow's Supertaster does a video review of five different WW Smart Ones meals.  Disregard what he says about the meaning of the name “Weight Watchers 360”.

From Darya at Summer Tomato:  “Healthy Snacking 101”, and a collection of “9 Surefire Ways to Sabotage Your Weight Loss”.  (Start a really hard workout regimen!  Choose an impossibly restrictive diet!  Rely entirely on willpower, because we all know how well that works!)  At Lifehacker, how to learn to love healthy food even if you're a picky eater!  And a couple of studies have shown, again, that moderate exercise can have a very beneficial effect on your health.

More recipes!  From Smitten Kitchen, gnocchi in tomato broth, not sauce.  Simply Recipes has salmon with fennel baked in parchment (“It can look somewhat fancy and intimidating, but I assure you, it's crazy easy to do”).  And courtesy of Snack Girl, DIY Reese's peanut-butter snacks and a breakfast hash that's good even without bacon!

Today's the 93rd anniversary of the start of Prohibition.  Not precisely what one would call a rip roaring success.  Tomorrow's Hot Buttered Rum Day, this Saturday is National Popcorn Day, and one week from today is National Pie Day.  (Not to be confused with Pi Day, which is March 14th.)

January 16th:  National Fig Newton Day, International Hot & Spicy Foods Day
January 17th:  Hot Buttered Rum Day
January 18th:  Peking Duck Day
January 19th:  National Popcorn Day;  1895, Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett of New York City granted the first US patent for food storage in tin cans

January 21st:  New England Clam Chowder Day, Rid the World of Fad Diets Day

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning January 9th:

Welcome to all our new members!  Occasional Disclaimer:  I'm Wren and every week I go through the grocery flyers and type up a list of the good healthy deals for the week, adding an assortment of recipes, food-related links, and opinionated editorial comment.  This is not “everything” in the flyers, only everything that strikes me as low-PointsPlus, low-calorie, low-processed, or in some other way Good For You.  Nor, and I must stress this, is this in any way shape form or fashion an official Weight Watchers Thing.  So VERY not.

Chow.com has easy butternut squash soup (roast it first in the oven), nineteen “healthy winter salads” and nine chili recipes.  These last may be handy as we're likely to get a hard freeze this weekend.  Also their ever-popular (or at least ever-repeated) How To Make Your Own Veggie Chips, including taro chips which are speckled, carrot chips, kale chips, and sweet potato chips which are quite pretty with crinkled edges.  And a very handy guide to exactly how much produce makes a cup!  Of broccoli, sixteen florets.  Of green beans, twenty or so.  Eight strawberries.  Thirty-two grapes.  And only four spears of asparagus!  (Although it may take many more at this time of year when most of the asparagus looks as though it has chive ancestry.)

Yoni Freedhoff at Weighty Matters is quite thoroughly annoyed at The Biggest Loser for targeting children in the new season.  So are a few TBL alumni.

Darya Pino touches on what she calls “Home Court Habits” for effective weight control, as well as how to work out when you don't like to exercise.  Snack Girl has a warm lentil salad (for those times when you're too cold to be interested in real salads – or as she puts it, “All I can think about is cheese, potatoes, and beer”), homemade chicken noodle soup, and a very positive review of WW360°.  And courtesy of one of her readers, a creamy-tasting roasted-veggie-soup recipe with no cream!  Sprouted Kitchen has a glazed-beet-and-carrot salad, Smitten Kitchen has an “ethereally smooth” hummus which involves hand-skinned chickpeas, and Simply Recipes has a chestnut-fennel-apple soup and a perfectly timed recipe for black bean turkey chili.

Seems everyone's into chili this week.  Appropriately, one week from today is -- correction from the print version -- International Hot And Spicy Foods Day.  The day after tomorrow – when the temperature is expected to drop twenty degrees from today's high – is National Hot Toddy Day.  All sorts of warmish things are being celebrated this week, including curried chicken (on the 12th) and hot pastrami sandwiches (the 14th).  The 11th is Milk Day and you can even warm that if it so please you.

January 9th:  National Apricot Day (I genuinely cannot imagine why it is in January)
January 10th:  National Bittersweet Chocolate Day
January 11th:  Milk Day, National Hot Toddy Day
January 12th:  Curried Chicken Day, National Marzipan Day
January 13th:  National Peach Melba Day
January 14th:  National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
January 15th:  National Strawberry Ice-Cream Day, National Fresh Squeezed Juice Day
January 16th:  National Fig Newton Day, International Hot and Spicy Foods Day

Don't forget to bring your brass monkeys inside this weekend.

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning January 2nd:

Welcome to 2013!  What you are reading is, I cannot too strongly emphasize this, my hobby and not to be considered in any way an official Weight Watchers publication:  every week I go through the newspaper grocery flyers, type up the good deals on what looks healthy or nutritious or WW-friendly (with emphasis on what Michael Pollan calls “the edges of the store” – the least-processed items to be found), add links to what food news or recipes look interesting on my favorite food blogs, intersperse rude and snarky comments, print the resulting hodgepodge out and post it as well to the blog you are now reading.

And, dig it, one of my equally rude and snarky comments on Facebook got copied at Fooducate!  Go to their blog entry on the Top 5 Foods and Ingredients People Don't Want to See in 2013:  they credit me by my Facebook name, Susan.  (I could not persuade Facebook that Cactus Wren was a real name.)

The one thing I dislike about the cooler weather (and yes, frost warnings to me count as “cooler weather”) is the sad paucity of fresh fruit in markets.  Chow.com has a nice fruit salad made from easily available winter fruits including kiwifruit and blood oranges, with a ginger-lime dressing.  Also a tasty-looking miso-and-noodle soup, a set of no less than forty-seven “healthy and easy dinner dishes” ranging from a seven-veg soup to Korean Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Noodles (with that many there surely must be something your family will eat), and their Top Ten Kitchen Tips of 2012.

If you want to try something New and Different, Grist has an article on how to legalize the keeping of goats in your city.  Snack Girl has information on potatoes, a healthy winter vegetable with an unfortunate rep.  (“The problem is we load them. Potatoes are not guns.”)  Simply Recipes has a slightly belated Hoppin' John recipe (well, the recipe wasn't belated when they put it on the site, but I'm not putting it here until the day after New Year's) which is good at any time of year, salmon mousse, and sweet potatoes mashed with bourbon.  And Sprouted Kitchen has a truly lovely herbal beverage.  (Juniper is an herb.  Gin is made with juniper.  QED.)

This is January:  National Hot Tea Month (my hot beverage of choice, sweet and milky and strong enough to stir itself), National Oatmeal Month (more oatmeal is served in January than any other month), National Soup Month, National Bread Machine Month, National Slow Cooking Month, and … ta rata ta rata ta rata tataa … the Seventh National Soup Swap Month!  The 26th is National Soup Swap Day, so you have plenty of time:  make up batches of soup and swap with your friends

January 6th is Bean Day.  For some reason most American websites link this to bean dishes, although I'd always thought it was from the bean in the King Cake served on Twelfth Night (whoever gets the bean in their slice is king for the day).  The day after is National Fruitcake Toss Day, and for most of those I've tasted (Collin Street is as always the exception) this is a very good idea.

January 2nd:  National Cream Puff Day, National Buffet Day;  feast of St. Marcarius, patron of confectioners and pastry chefs
January 3rd:  National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day (One source gives this, inexplicably, as National Chocolate-Filled Cherry Day.  I won't turn down either);  1871, Henry Bradley of Binghamton, New York, receives the US patent for oleomargarine;  1892, J.R.R. Tolkien born
January 4th:  National Spaghetti Day
January 5th:  National Whipped Cream Day;  1889, the word "hamburger" first appears in print (before that, and for some time after, it was generally referred to as "hamburg steak");  1914, Aaron "Bunny" Lapin born, inventor of, God help us, Reddi-Wip which was once marketed as something to put on cold cereal in place of milk and I think that merits a second "God help us"
January 6th:  Bean Day, National Shortbread Day
January 7th:  National Tempura Day;  1896, The Boston Cooking School Cookbook first published (first cookbook to specify level measurements for ingredients);  1972, "American Pie" (the song) is #1 on the charts
January 8th:  English Toffee Day;  1676, Charles II of England revokes his proclamation closing all Coffee Houses in London (it lasted all of sixteen days);  1940, Britain's Ministry of Food institutes rationing of butter, sugar, and bacon
January 9th:  National Apricot Day
