Great suggestion from Yoni Freedhoff: “I call it my 24-hour exercise cancellation policy and it’s pretty straightforward. At some point each and every day I grab a glance at my next day’s schedule. If there’s a logical slot for exercise, and if there are no real reasons getting in my way (deadlines, kid obligations, injuries, illnesses, etc.), in exercise goes and unless I cancel it before the sun rises the next morning, or unless something honestly emergent arises, when that timeslot arrives, I’m exercising – happy or sad, sick or well, miserable or enthusiastic … ” We might do well to emulate this!
Lots of good stuff at Fooducate this week! A salad of grilled fennel with oranges, tips for healthy cooking on a budget, and an analysis of the “Paleo” diet including its upside, downside, and highly questionable side. Darya at Summer Tomato is a great source this week too: the top ten most overrated (fruit juice, margarine, protein bars) and underrated (organ meats, mushrooms, egg yolks, OYSTERS) health foods.
Recipes! Chow.com has Kosher-for-Passover breakfast recipes (I'll take the smoked salmon hash), how to make your own gefilte fish, steamed artichokes with a green garlic aioli, a shaved-asparagus salad, how to honey-mustard-glaze a ham (to each her own; I glaze mine with brown sugar and orange juice), and how to make your own Easter-egg dyes. And strawberry recipes, lots of strawberry recipes at a season when we have lots of strawberries. Simply Recipes has a kale-mushroom-cheddar bake, Sprouted Kitchen has beetburgers (which reminds me inescapably of Boris's meatloaf/Morris's beetloaf in the book version of Freaky Friday), and Snack Girl has how to cut calories in a banana split!

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning March 20th:
Happy Spring, and sorry I couldn't make tonight's meeting! At Weighty Matters, along with Yoni Freedhoff's usual helping of ranting about The Biggest Loser, there's an interesting piece on how to actually form a new habit and another on juice, which nutritionally is sugar-water with some added micronutrients. Or as Dr. Freedhoff puts it with his own inimitable tact and subtlety, “Juice is NOT a F@*#$*&g Fruit!”
Mark's Daily Apple has a lot of good things this week: a recipe for “Chicken With Buttery Caper Sauce” that looks absolutely delicious if you're into capers. It would be easy to cut down the four tablespoons of oil – even if you only reduced it to three, it's a four-serving recipe so that would be your two Healthy Oils for the day in one serving. Also how to make turkey jerky, a recipe which I wish could have been posted before the cold weather broke as it involves leaving the oven at 200ºF for “six to ten hours”, and what are claimed to be “10 Full Body Workouts You Can Do in 10 Minutes Flat”. Well … maybe. For certain values of “you”.
Summer Tomato has a good piece on how to overcome “texture issues” in food, and one on “10 Tasty Carbs That Won't Make You Fat” including fruit, beans, quinoa, and wine. And at Grist, just for fun, they link to a series of vintage McDonald's menus! Back in 1953 you got a side order of adjective with every item you ordered: choices on that year's “McDonald's Amazing Menu” include the “Tempting Cheeseburger”, “Thirst-Quenching Coke”, and “Delightful Root Beer”. Before that, at “McDonald's Bar-B-Q” back in 1940, hamburgers weren't really even a thing: their primary menu item was “Our Famous Barbecued Beef, Ham, or Pork”, with “Aristocratic Hamburgers” (!!) an also-ran.
Recipes! Chow.com has tips for hosting your first Passover which might come in handy even if it's not your first, a nice set of Passover recipes, and a decidedly non-kosher recipe for asparagus wrapped in prosciutto and broiled. Also an Easter picnic prepared and served entirely in jars. Simply Recipes has pasta e fagioli, what I grew up calling “pasta fazool”, a thick pasta-beans-and-veg soup bordering on stew. Also how to clean leeks, and how to make leeks vinaigrette with them when you have. If you have any left, Sprouted Kitchen has a mushroom-millet-and-leek frittata. And Snack Girl has spaghetti squash, aninebriated abbreviated list of “Junk Food Holidays”, a healthy thing to do with bacon (spoiler: it's akin to Chow.com's asparagus-prosciutto recipe), and snark about “veggie chips”.

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning March 13th:
At Fooducate, I see where supermarket chains are hiring registered dietitians to help shoppers make healthier food choices. I can see the logic: they'd far rather you switch from brand A to brand B in the same store than go to another store. Yoni Freedhoff, at Weighty Matters, has a link to a really disturbing documentary about Dana, an eight-year-old child with anorexia nervosa: the director of the residential center where Dana is treated reports that they're getting a distressing number of clients under 10 years old. And Marion Nestle at Food Politics has some interesting takes on the (recently tossed) NYC ban on soft drinks over 16 ounces. (She points out that in the 1950s, a 16-ounce drink was a lot – Coca-Cola's then-new “big 16 oz size” was advertised as serving three people.)
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that the oft-repeated “turn off the TV during dinner” rule might have a very tangible reason for helping with weight loss: if you're not distracted from your meal, you remember it better and this can seriously influence your later eating.
A company in Germany has introduced a new product called Food Finish, an edible metallic-toned spray paint available in red, blue, silver, and gold. It's available for online purchase at €25 per can, or about US$32. The article is illustrated with lovely photographs of silver apples and blue strawberries, raising the inevitable question “In God's name, why?”
At Lifehacker, we learn (as if we haven't already been told) that walking through the day is as important as formalized “exercise” to our health. In one study, people watching television increased their steps-per-day by about 3000 simply by marching in place during the commercials!
Recipes! Chow's gone all Irish, or sort of, with boxty, beef braised in Guinness, cabbage recipes, something called Velvetbomb Punch, and how to pour a Black & Tan. Simply Recipes has another beef-and-Guinness-stew recipe, along with pork chops with cabbage, oatmeal soda bread, and may God help us green mashed potatoes. And from Sprouted Kitchen, some nice multigrain waffles.
Tomorrow is 3/14, National Pi Day, so bake a pi.
March 13th: National Coconut Torte Day
March 14th: National Pi Day, National Potato Chip Day
March 15th: National Poires belle Hélène Day; 1980, McDonald's test-market a new product called "Chicken McNuggets". They are wildly popular, possibly because diners do not realize that McNuggets at the time are fried in a mixture of 7% vegetable oil and 93% rendered beef fat. They are now cooked in vegetable oil laced with beef flavoring, but still carry a good deal of fat
March 16th: National Artichoke Hearts Day
March 17th: National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day, National Green Beer Day
March 18th: National Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day
March 19th: National Chocolate Caramel Day
March 20th: Bock Beer Day, National Ravioli Day
And if you're interested in this, you'd better put your mail order in early: Mercer's Dairy, in Wilmington, North Carolina, has introduced a wine ice-cream. This is not a wine flavored ice-cream: it comes in six flavors, including chocolate cabernet and raspberry chardonnay, and is five percent alcohol. This could conceivably revolutionize breakups.

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning March 6th:
The Fooducators (Fooducaties?) are decidedly of two minds about the recent study linking the Mediterranean diet to a decreased risk of heart disease. There are confounding variables that are rarely mentioned in the news coverage: the population, geography, the use of a low-fat variant on the Medi diet. But eating more fruits and veg and less red meat has to be healthy. They've also got a two-parter on the differences between junk foods sold in the US and the same junk foods formulated for the international market, and “10 Reasons to Quit Soft Drinks”. (I freely admit they haven't yet come up with a reason that overrides my helpless addiction to caffeine.)
Speaking of soft drinks, a recent study concluded that American women are getting fat because we don't do enough work around the house. Guess what? That study was funded by the Coca-Cola company. Or as Grist phrased it, “Suddenly the frantic flailing for any bull**** , sexist, non-soda-related explanation for U.S. average weight gain makes a lot more sense.” Food Politics has a comprehensive and comprehensible exploration of the European horsemeat-in-the-hamburger scandal. Summer Tomato has 9 ways to eat more mindfully, 6 things to consider before buying a juicer (including the warning that even vegetable juicing is “an incredibly efficient way to take in calories”), and “The Tastiest, Easiest, Healthiest Bean Salad on the Planet” (“This is not one of those nasty 3-bean salads your well-meaning aunt brings to barbecues”).
SuperTaster at Chow.com offers his video review of Girl Scout cookies. The “perennial classic, the Thin Mint” left him, he says, “underwhelmed: not a lot of chocolate flavor, only a little bit of mint flavor. Kind of a boring little cookie, but I did finish it. Then I finished a couple more. Then some time went by and, um, I kind of finished the sleeve.” (None of us would ever do such a thing.)
Recipes! Chow.com has an easy rice pilaf – done with white rice, but a little experimentation would make it brown-rice-compatible – and How To Make Your Own Corned Beef And Cabbage. Also homemade lemon curd, good for this time of year. Simply Recipes has chicken cacciatore, sole piccata (“with a sauce of white wine, lemon juice, capers, parsley and butter” – mmmm), and a Provençal salad of endive and anchovies. Snack Girl offers a vegetarian enchilada casserole at 6 PointsPlus per serving, affordable superfoods, how to make your morning oatmeal the night before (in the slow cooker), and a snarky review of the new Special K “Breakfast Sandwiches”.
