Wren's bargain guide, week beginning June 26th:

Sorry about not making a flyer or blog entry last week – I was on another forced march ahem, fun summertime adventure and road trip with my housemate, to Idaho and back.  2500 miles in four days.

Cool stuff at Fooducate!  The Food Standards Agency (UK equivalent to the FDA) has mandated front-of-package nutrition labeling, with less-than-healthful items marked in red.  The best way to hydrate, besides drinking water, is to eat your fruits and veggies.  And, apropos, ten reasons to eat blueberries!

Darya Rose at Summer Tomato has ways to eat more probiotics, a guest post by Yoni Freedhoff on the perils of “nutritionism”, and 10 reasons you aren't losing weight.  And Marion Nestle at Food Politics reviews Darya's book, Foodist.

Recipes!  Chow.com has barbecue chicken eight ways, sauces thirty-three (including a triple-nightshade sauce involving tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers), how to grill Argentine style, mushroom and chile tacos, and a stack of refreshing nonalcoholic summer drinks.  Also a set of recipes for things to do with canned sardines which you should eat more of as they are very healthy.  Sprouted Kitchen has something they regrettably label a “veggie naan'wich”;  Smitten Kitchen has bowtie pasta with sugar snap peas, dressed with lemon and ricotta.  Simply Recipes has tilapia with a sundried-tomato-and-Parmesan crust, as well as a very appealing cucumber-grape salad.  And Snack Girl offers up tips for a healthier Fourth of July, an unexpected combination of watermelon and feta, and a slow-cooker corn chowder:  “I love my slow cooker because I 'set and forget'.  I love the forgetting part – it comes quite naturally to me.”

Tomorrow is National Orange Blossom Day, rather inexplicably as orange-blossom season ended sometime in April.  398 years ago tomorrow, the first tea was imported to the Western Hemisphere.  July 1st is the 60th anniversary of Cheez Whiz.  And with July we commence a whole raft of food days, weeks, and months, which I shall enumerate in next week's entry.

June 26th:  National Chocolate Pudding Day
June 27th:  National Orange Blossom Day, National Indian Pudding Day
June 28th:  National Tapioca Day, National Ceviche Day;  1887, Coca-Cola syrup patented;
June 29th:  National Almond Buttercrunch Day
June 30th:  National Ice-Cream Soda Day;  1906, Congress passes the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act, and if you read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle you know why
July 1st:  National Gingersnap Day, National Creative Ice-Cream Flavors Day;  1916, Coca-Cola introduces the distinctive "hobble-skirt" bottle (easy to find by touch in a vat of ice-water);  1953, Cheez Whiz introduced
July 2nd:  National Anisette Day
July 3rd:  Eat Beans Day, National Chocolate Wafer Day;  1924, Clarence Birdseye founds the General Seafood Corporation, birth of the frozen-food industry;  1954, nearly nine years after World War II ends, rationing finally ends in Great Britain

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning June 12th:

If you have any Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berries in your freezer, contact Costco.  This product has been linked with close to ninety cases of Hepatitis A in eight states, including Arizona.  Townsend Farms has issued a recall:  the product in question is a 3lb bag labeled “Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend”, with the UPC code 078414 404448.  If you or anyone in your family have eaten them, the Centers for Disease Control strongly suggest you contact your local health department ( http://www.maricopa.gov/publichealth/ ) to find out if you need a vaccine.  Costco is offering free vaccination in their own pharmacies for people who've purchased the berries, or reimbursement if you prefer to get vaccinated elsewhere.

At Fooducate, there's a list of the top three reasons for food recalls (hep A isn't on the list), a note on Target's new “Simply Balanced” line of organic and natural foods, and an article about the biggest misconceptions about the Mediterranean diet.  (The biggest is that there is something that can be called THE Mediterranean diet.)  Darya Rose, at Summer Tomato, has a nice piece on decoding “menu-speak”.  (Look for such words as “roasted”, “seared”, “spiced”, or “ broiled”, she says;  avoid “melted”, “smothered”, “creamy”, “gooey”, or “glazed”.  One of her commentors has already added helpfully, “Then there’s “loaded” or “super”, which seems to mean there are a million ingredients, and two of them are cheese and bacon.”)

Recipes!  Chow.com has Salade Niçoise, chicken satay, Thai pickles, and a double helping of Father's Day “guy food” stereotypes:  a collection of “Beer and Beef Recipes” and another of “Manly Rib Recipes”.  Simply Recipes has, simply, “Shrimp and Grits”.  Okay, that's very ... Southern.  And Snack Girl has the healthiest oils (she recommends olive and canola, both on WW's Healthy Oils list), a six-PointsPlus-per-serving Oreo refrigerator pie, and how to make a burger out of a portabello mushroom.

Stone fruits are moving in, and the first Rainier cherries are in the shops.  Either it's too soon or this is not a good year for Rainiers, because I haven't found any sweet ones yet.

Next Tuesday is International Picnic Day.  We're looking at a solid week of 105°+ temperatures:  have your picnic indoors.  And tomorrow is my own personal holiday, Kitchen Klutzes of America Day.

June 12th:  International Cachaça Day, National Peanut Butter Cookie Day, National Jerky Day
June 13th:  Kitchen Klutzes of America Day;  feast of St Anthony of Padua, patron saint of swineherds, domestic animals, harvest, and the unfed
June 14th:  National Strawberry Shortcake Day
June 15th:  National Lobster Day, World Gin Day, Key West Conch Fritter Day (sadly conch is not easily available here), National Potatoe Day (this date in 1992, US Vice President Dan Quayle “corrected” a New Jersey student's correct spelling of “potato”)
June 16th:  National Fudge Day
June 17th:  Eat All Your Veggies Day, National Apple Strudel Day;  birthday (1903) of Ruth Graves Wakefield, inventor of the Toll House cookie
June 18th:  National Cherry Tart Day, International Picnic Day
June 19th:  National Dry Martini Day;  1941, General Mills introduces a new breakfast cereal, “Cheerioats” (not changed to “Cheerios” until 1945)

Wren's bargain guide, week beginning June 5th:

Hi!  As of this week I'll be attending the 5:30 p.m. meeting rather than the 7:00.  I'm Wren, frustrate the hell out of poor Debi by my inability to keep my mouth shut, and every week go through the grocery flyers and type up everything I find that looks  to be both of a good price and healthy/WW-friendly/minimally processed.  I add various bits of information found on the Internet.  If my printer were working I would have printed this out as well and brought copies for everyone -- sorry.  Disclaimer:  NOT an official WW publication, only my hobby.

Lots at Fooducate, including surprising sources for calcium (sardines!  Well, yeah, you do eat the bones), making rather than buying bread crumbs, a proteiny salad of chickpeas and black beans, a far more complete than you'd ever wanted list of all the ingredients in a Big Mac, and a healthy and natural way to turn your fruit smoothies an alarming shade of pink.  Grist has information on Chapul's new line of cricket-based protein bars.  (Bear in mind that Americans' intake of protein in most cases exceeds requirement.)  And the New York Times has an editorial, “Breeding the Nutrition Out Of Our Food”.

Recipes!  It's blueberry season, and Chow.com has seventeen fresh-blueberry recipes.  Also bell peppers stuffed with feta cheese, easy beef kebabs, and a lightened-and-herbed potato salad recipe (shallot-and-Dijon vinaigrette instead of mayonnaise).  Smitten Kitchen has another and very different potato salad (this one involves lobster), homemade Sangria with so much fresh fruit floating in it it must qualify as a dessert (fruit is free!  Freeeee!), and a Greek salad.  Sprouted Kitchen has salmon kebabs.  Simply Recipes provides a Mediterranean chicken salad, chipotle-salsa baked chicken (the illustration's a bit disturbing, but really it's only four ounces of cheese for six servings), and a Mexican shrimp cocktail.  And Snack Girl has soft-boiled eggs with toast soldiers, superfast salmon, and – all blessings on her – emergency solutions for when you NEED a sweet but have only 3 PointsPlus left.

The new crop of red grapes is in.  The new crop of red grapes is ubiquitous, omnipresent, inescapable.

This is June, rather inexplicably National Turkey Lovers' Month.  Also National Seafood Month, National Soul Food Month, National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month, and National Iced Tea Month.  This Sunday is National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day, incorporating both fruit and vegetable.  And the 11th is National German Chocolate Cake Day.  DYK of the week:  German chocolate cake is not German.  It originated on the back of a package of German's brand baking chocolate.

June 5th:  National Gingerbread Day
June 6th:  National Applesauce Cake Day
June 7th:  National Chocolate Ice-Cream Day
June 8th:  National Jelly Doughnut Day, World Oceans Day
June 9th:  National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day
June 10th:  National Herbs and Spices Day, National Black Cow Day
June 11th:  National German Chocolate Cake Day
June 12th:  National Peanut Butter Cookie Day, International Cachaça Day
