The wholly unofficial Bargain Guide, week of July 22

To my unending embarrassment I now realize that in every handout and every blog post, if I ever mentioned the cheapest grade of ground beef I described it as “73/37” – 73% lean, 37% fat. Arithmetic is not my strongest point.

It is storm season and the power is likely to be flickering on and off like fireflies. Salads do not need cooking, so keep salad greens and dressing around.

Costco has something called a Black Velvet Apricot which I did not buy but now wish I had as I love apricots and it was very pretty.

National Baked Bean Month is apparently never going to end. Saturday, the 25th, is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day; the 28th is National Milk Chocolate Day (antioxidants! You need to eat it!). And the 29th, next Wednesday, is – I swear I did not make this up – National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day. If you can learn anything about National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day, please, please post it in comments!

July 22: National Penuche Fudge Day
July 23: National Vanilla Ice Cream Day
July 24: National Tequila Day
July 25: National Hot Fudge Sundae Day
July 26: National Coffee Milkshake Day

(Not a combination that would have occurred to me)
July 28: National Milk Chocolate Day
July 29: National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day

Sorry for the delay

All berries and stone fruits are very good this week, especially cherries.

Saturday the 18th is National Caviar Day. One tablespoon of caviar is two Points, and for me no temptation as I have always perceived caviar as tasting like a cheap grade of canned sardines mixed with an equal amount of salt. Your mileage may vary. And I’d love to know who promoted this, but the 21st is National Junk Food Day.

The 19th is Sundae Sunday. I’m sure we can all figure some appropriate commemoration.

July 15: National Tapioca Pudding Day
July 16: National Corn Fritters Day
July 17: National Peach Ice Cream Day
July 18: National Caviar Day
July 19: National Daiquiri Day
July 20: National Hot Dog Day

Week of July 8

Sorry about the shortness of this week’s entry: I can’t find the flyers for Pro’s, Food City, Rancho Grande, or Sprout’s. If I do run across them I’ll update to reflect.

It is still National Baked Bean Month and National Ice Cream Month. Frankly right now I would rather eat ice cream than baked beans, or than bake beans. I’m trying to figure out who came up with the title “National July Belongs to Blueberries Month”, but it’s that too. The 10th is Pick Blueberries Day, and fittingly, the 11th is Blueberry Muffin Day.

Today is (was) National Chocolate with Almonds Day. Let us celebrate accordingly. And the 10th, Friday, is Piña Colada Day. Have one. Have a couple.

Week of June 24th

Bargain guide, week of June 24

Somehow, perhaps fortunately, it has escaped my attention until now that June is National Candy Month. More appropriately for Weight Watchers members, it is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month as well as National Dairy Month.

June 25th is National Strawberry Parfait Day. Make it with fresh strawberries, Splenda, and Golden Spoon and you’ve covered a dairy and a fruit in your Good Health Guidelines!

I include produce prices in this but still the best place for good produce at good prices is the farmers’ market/ranch market/roadside stand. Unfortunately they do not print flyers. If you run across any good deals I’ve missed, post them in comments at http://wwwrentips.blogspot.com and I will love you forever.

Note: There is (to my knowledge) no truth to the story of the student who saved money by living on ramen noodles for his entire four years at college, only to die of malnutrition the week before graduation. Nonetheless I do not recommend it.

Skate can be cut into nuggets and prepared like scallops.

Keta salmon is another name for chum salmon. They are lighter in color and have a milder flavor and flakier texture than sockeye or coho salmon.
