If you watched TV at all over this past summer, you’ll have noticed Domino’s Pizza’s “rebranding” effort: basically a self-deprecating announcement that “Yeah, everyone agrees that our pizza is rubbish, even we acknowledge that it’s rubbish, and now we want to hear your ideas of what we might do to make it better.” According to an article in the New York Times, or clickable at http://wwwrentips.blogspot.com – the primary change in Domino’s pizzas has been a massive increase in the amount of cheese on them … and this was paid for by a government handout. The Domino’s campaign – which cost $12 million – was created and financed by an organization called Dairy Management:
And Dairy Management, which has made cheese its cause, is not a private business consultant. It is a marketing creation of the United States Department of Agriculture – the same agency at the center of a federal anti-obesity drive that discourages over-consumption of some of the very foods Dairy Management is vigorously promoting.
Urged on by government warnings about saturated fat, Americans have been moving toward low-fat milk for decades, leaving a surplus of whole milk and milk fat. Yet the government, through Dairy Management, is engaged in an effort to find ways to get dairy back into Americans’ diets, primarily through cheese.(Per capita consumption of cheese in the US has nearly tripled since 1970.)

I forgot to mention that this third week of October has been National Kraut Sandwich Week and National Pickled Peppers Week. The 23rd, this Saturday, is National Canning Day. A thrilling thought I’m sure for all of us Arizonans who are thinking at this point “But I just got the kitchen cooled down.” The 25th, Monday, is National Greasy Foods Day: to be honored in the breach rather than the observance. There’s a fascinating article at the Fooducate blog about the common “calories-in-equals-calories-out” notion, which it turns out may be incomplete: in a study done in Sweden, volunteers who snacked on candy and sweets gained more weight than those who snacked on an equal calorie value of peanuts. (The article also adds that the difference is “second order magnitude” when compared to Americans’ overall need to bloody well eat less.)

There’s a fascinating article at the Fooducate blog about the common “calories-in-equals-calories-out” notion, which it turns out may be incomplete: in a study done in Sweden, volunteers who snacked on candy and sweets gained more weight than those who snacked on an equal calorie value of peanuts. Bargain guide, week beginning October 13th
Tomorrow, October 14th, is National Chocolate Covered Insects Day. This is one chocolate treat I will voluntarily pass up, but if you really want some (it is after all October) you can order them online from Candy Warehouse, Candy Favorites, Educational Innovations, Science Bob, or Amazon.com.
The day after is National Chicken Cacciatore Day, a delicious dish and very easy to adapt to WW (take skinless chicken parts, brown them, throw in a can of tomatoes, every Italian vegetable you can think of plus some more garlic and red wine, simmer for half an hour). And according to Marion Nestle at Food Politics, the Institute of Medicine has just released its first analysis (PDF file) of Front-Of-Package labeling – “those little spots, check marks, and tokens that are all over food packages these days and that are supposed to indicate that the product is especially healthy for you”, as she explains.

Bargain guide, week beginning October 6th
This Friday, October 8th, is National Fluffernutter Day. There may be a way to make this low in Points, but if so I cannot think of it. The day after, rather to my bafflement, is Moldy Cheese Day. Bleu cheese is a moldy cheese. The day after tomorrow is also the second Friday in October and thus World Egg Day. One week from today is Yorkshire Pudding Day, and I know there’s no low-Points version of that. This second week in October is American Beer Week and, of course, National Food Bank Week.
Found at Serious Eats: a genuine low-Points recipe for homemade creamed corn, which is in every imaginable way better than that glop in a can. Honestly: two ears of corn, one cup of 2% milk, salt and pepper! That’s all! Dump into a pan, scrape the cobs to release the corn “milk”, barely simmer for 35 minutes or until it starts to thicken. Even better the next day.
