Sorry, everyone, for the delay, but I think I'm going to survive this cold. And I do mean to see you at next week's meeting if I can manage it without infecting you all.
Chicken is pretty good at a number of places. I think we may be seeing the last of the stone fruits for this year: pity. The new crops of pears and apples are moving in. Grapes are very good.
Several places have candy-corn 10/$10. Shh! Nobody tell Debi!

Bargain guide, week of September 2nd
Sorry for the shortness of this week’s sheet: I got no flyers for Rancho Grande, Smart & Final or Sprouts.
Welcome to September. Welcome also to – I swear I could not make all of these up – Food Safety Month, National Rice Month, National Potato Month, National Honey Month, National Papaya Month, National Biscuit Month, National Chicken Month, National Mushroom Month, National Better Breakfast Month, National Ice Cream Sandwich Month, National Organic Harvest Month, National Cholesterol Awareness Month, and National Bourbon Heritage Month. It is also National Apple Month, but that will continue through November – yes, apples get three consecutive months all their own.
Labor Day is this weekend, which means good prices on soft drinks and anything that can be put onto a grill. Stone fruits are still good, apples and pears are coming in: typing this up every week has made me so much more aware of the seasonality of fruits and how it changes, not just month to month but week to week!
Wine Season and Oyster Season both begin this month.

Guide for July 29
School is starting very soon, so for the benefit of anyone who may be having to pack lunches for child or spouse or self, I heartily recommend http://lunchinabox.net – a website devoted to the fine (but surprisingly simple and quickly prepared!) art of the bento, or Japanese box lunch.
Today is National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day and I still have no idea what that means. Friday is National Jump for Jelly Beans Day: it takes twelve Jelly Bellys to make one Point. Next Monday, August 3rd, is Grab Some Nuts Day. Tuesday, the 4th, is National Lasagne Day – Nature’s most perfect food!

The wholly unofficial Bargain Guide, week of July 22
To my unending embarrassment I now realize that in every handout and every blog post, if I ever mentioned the cheapest grade of ground beef I described it as “73/37” – 73% lean, 37% fat. Arithmetic is not my strongest point.
It is storm season and the power is likely to be flickering on and off like fireflies. Salads do not need cooking, so keep salad greens and dressing around.
Costco has something called a Black Velvet Apricot which I did not buy but now wish I had as I love apricots and it was very pretty.
National Baked Bean Month is apparently never going to end. Saturday, the 25th, is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day; the 28th is National Milk Chocolate Day (antioxidants! You need to eat it!). And the 29th, next Wednesday, is – I swear I did not make this up – National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day. If you can learn anything about National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day, please, please post it in comments!
July 22: National Penuche Fudge Day
July 23: National Vanilla Ice Cream Day
July 24: National Tequila Day
July 25: National Hot Fudge Sundae Day
July 26: National Coffee Milkshake Day
July 27: National Crème Brûlée Day, National Scotch Day
(Not a combination that would have occurred to me)
July 28: National Milk Chocolate Day
July 29: National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day
