  1. Hi Wren,
Thanks for all the hard work you do with making these lists every week! You saved us a ton last week when we had to buy 10 watermelons for church! We went right in and got ourselves the 12 cents a pound deal you pointed out.

I got Pros, Rancho Grande and Sprouts in yesterday's mail, and the chain stores in today's mail, which might explain why you only got half.

    Sprouts has:
    Strawberries, 4 1lb boxes for $5
    Cantaloupe, 4 for $5
White and Yellow Peaches and Nectarines $0.99/pound
    Red or Green Grapes-2lbs/$3
Mushrooms 8 oz box for $0.99
    Red Bell Peppers: $0.88 each
Bob's Red Mill Flaxseed Meal 2 1lb bags for $5
Their ads are on their website if you want to see other good deals-not sure what you look for

    Pros has:
    4 lbs bananas $0.99
    Cherries $0.99/lb
Roma Tomatoes 3 lbs for $0.99
    Mangoes 4lbs for $0.99
    10 lbs Potatoes for $0.99
    Lettuce: 3 heads for $0.99
Granny Smith Apples: 5 lbs for $0.99
    Oranges: 5 lbs for $0.99
    Kiwi: 7 for $0.99
    Radishes: 4 bundles for $0.99
    Cucumbers: 6 for $0.99
They have a ton of fish and beef on the ad too but it's all stuff I don't buy so I don't know if it's a good deal.

    Rancho Grande has:
Cilantro or Green Onion, 5 bundles for $1
    Lemons: 4 lbs for $1
    Celery-3 bundles for $0.99
    Carrots: 4 lbs for $1

  2. Second, here's the scoop on the produce co-op
    The Co-Op is Bountiful Baskets

You pay $16.50 ($15 for food and $1.50 for credit card processing fees) and you get a basket full of preselected produce.

You get approximately 12 different things, and they try to split it between fruits and veggies, though with the seasons, sometimes there's a slight imbalance (ie right now we get a lot more fruit than veggies).

The produce is at varying stages of ripness. Some is ready to eat right away, some has to ripen a few days. That gives you plenty of time to work through everything.

They also have a special every week that you can buy. This week it's 16 pounds of RANIER cherries for $19!!! That price is unheard of in AZ!

They also have breads, though I've never bought them.

You can buy as many baskets as you want, as often or infrequently as you want. There is no need to buy every week if you don't want to.

Sign ups are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with a deadline of Wednesday at 10:00pm. Pickup time is anywhere between 7:00 and 9:00 on Saturday mornings. The exact time varies by site.

The site's a little confusing. To "shop" you have to click "AZ Bountiful Baskets" or "UT Bountiful Baskets" in the top middle of the page. Then you pick your site and go from there.

    A couple of idiosyncrasies:
    1. The first time you buy, there is an additional, one-time $3 fee.

    2. You must bring your own basket or box to transport your food home in.

    3. You can buy a produce basket without the special or bread, but you can't buy the special or bread without a basket.

    4. Bigger sites tend to have better variety. But how you determine which sites are larger is by trial and error. Sometimes when you select a site it will say "this site has 97 spaces left" or something but that seems to work only part of the time. The reason bigger sites get better variety, is they pool the money by site, not by state or region. So if your site has $3000 (200 people at $15 each) then your site has better buying power than the site with $750. So if you're signing up tomorrow, and one site has a ton of spaces left and the other has just a few, chances are that the variety will be better at the site with just a few spots left. FYI in the East Valley, AZ, Freestone at Lindsey and Gualadupe is the largest site we've found.

    5. Every other week, you can also choose organic, at least in AZ. Organic baskets are $25. We did it once, but were not impressed. We went back to conventional + a veggie wash.

I uploaded a spreadsheet here of what we've been getting if you want to evaluate before buying. I know the first time we did it, we were a little nervous because we couldn't find info like that. The first line is the date, the second line is the type (Conventional Basket or Organic) and the third line is the location of the site. The link is here. (Crossed out items are ones we gave away on site). We've never gotten anything really obscure.

Just thought I'd share. The Ranier deal was too good to pass up. Even if you threw everything in your basket away, that's still $2.21 per pound for the cherries! :)

    Happy Shopping
