Bargain guide, week beginning July 7th

Oh, dear: we missed National Canned Luncheon Meat Week. (Lovely Spam! Wonderful Spam!) This is, however, National July Belongs To Blueberries Month, which should put paid to any notions you might have harbored that I make these holidays up -- I don't have that much imagination. The 10th is Pick Blueberries Day, and so you’ll have something to do with them, the next day is Blueberry Muffin Day.

July 7th: National Strawberry Sundae Day
July 8th: National Chocolate with Almonds Day
July 9th: National Sugar Cookie Day
July 10th: Pick Blueberries Day, National Piña Colada Day
July 11th: National Blueberry Muffin Day
July 12th: National Pecan Pie Day
July 13th: Beans 'n' Franks Day, National French Fries Day
July 14th: Macaroni Day, National Grand Marnier Day

In non-food connections: July 10th is Clerihew Day. A clerihew is a four-line biographical poem, of aabb rhyme scheme and often of irregular meter, something like this:

Debi Allen Duvall
Is the wisest of us all.
Showing great self control
She has five separate times returned to goal.

And one week from today is Bastille Day, so cook something French and healthy. Ça ira!

The latest from Consumerist: A lot of what’s sold in the US as “extra virgin olive oil” isn’t, because (unlike European Union countries) we have no legal definition (as yet) for “extra virgin”, and because what regulations we do have are “voluntarily enforced” so the oil may not even be olive. Only 12% of Americans know how many calories they should consume in a day. And, in a complete obliteration of the line between “content” and “advertising”, the site ScienceBlogs – hitherto devoted entirely to blots about, you know, science – has added to its list of blogs one called “Food Frontiers”, written and purchased by PepsiCo.

If you run across any good bargains that I've missed, or if you write a clerihew, please post it in comments.
