Bargain guide, week beginning September 8th

At one end of the healthiness range, the 13th is “Snack A Pickle Day” – most pickles have a Points count of zero, and they crunch. Enjoy. At the other end, the day after is National Cream Filled Doughnut Day. This second week of September is National Waffle Week and National Biscuits and Gravy Week, but it’s also Vegetarian Awareness Week.

Tomorrow is National Steak au Poivre Day, which can be quite low in Points depending on the steak you choose and how careful you are with the butter.

Courtesy of Consumerist, I’ve found an interesting Salon article exploring the scientific reasons why McDonald’s food is so notably, even disturbingly, resistant to deterioration. (There’s a link to photos of a Happy Meal that appears almost unchanged 137 days after it was purchased. Yummy!)

Also, I ran across a fascinating article about Kellogg’s Fiber Plus breakfast cereal, which is promoted as having “40% of your daily fiber!” as well as fruit and yogurt, and which actually includes – on an “Ingredients” list eighty-three items long – Red #40, Blue #2, Green #3, Blue #1, Red #40 Lake, “nonfat yogurt powder”, and for some reason two separate mentions of “fructooligosaccharides”.
