Wren's bargain guide, week beginning January 16th:

An interesting article at Salon.com about how the physical experience of food – what the author calls “playing with your food” – can influence appetite.  And from Fooducate, something else to figure into the ever-challenging, not to say fraught, topic of “serving sizes”:  density.  A half-cup serving of Grape-Nuts cereal is 58 grams – two ounces.  A 3/4-cup serving of Grape-Nuts Flakes is 29 grams, barely over an ounce.

Recipes!  Chow.com has easy roasted or baked chicken recipes (great for the time of year when we Arizonans are actually willing to turn the oven on, as well as for those nights when you're thinking “If I have to deal with one more damn boneless skinless chicken breast … ”) and six ideas for healthier homemade pizza.  And Chow's Supertaster does a video review of five different WW Smart Ones meals.  Disregard what he says about the meaning of the name “Weight Watchers 360”.

From Darya at Summer Tomato:  “Healthy Snacking 101”, and a collection of “9 Surefire Ways to Sabotage Your Weight Loss”.  (Start a really hard workout regimen!  Choose an impossibly restrictive diet!  Rely entirely on willpower, because we all know how well that works!)  At Lifehacker, how to learn to love healthy food even if you're a picky eater!  And a couple of studies have shown, again, that moderate exercise can have a very beneficial effect on your health.

More recipes!  From Smitten Kitchen, gnocchi in tomato broth, not sauce.  Simply Recipes has salmon with fennel baked in parchment (“It can look somewhat fancy and intimidating, but I assure you, it's crazy easy to do”).  And courtesy of Snack Girl, DIY Reese's peanut-butter snacks and a breakfast hash that's good even without bacon!

Today's the 93rd anniversary of the start of Prohibition.  Not precisely what one would call a rip roaring success.  Tomorrow's Hot Buttered Rum Day, this Saturday is National Popcorn Day, and one week from today is National Pie Day.  (Not to be confused with Pi Day, which is March 14th.)

January 16th:  National Fig Newton Day, International Hot & Spicy Foods Day
January 17th:  Hot Buttered Rum Day
January 18th:  Peking Duck Day
January 19th:  National Popcorn Day;  1895, Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett of New York City granted the first US patent for food storage in tin cans
January 20th:  National Buttercrunch Day, National Cheese Lovers' Day, National Granola Bar Day, National Coffee Break Day
January 21st:  New England Clam Chowder Day, Rid the World of Fad Diets Day
