Bargain guide, week beginning July 21st

The Holiday and Champagne grapes ought to be arriving any week now. AJ’s Fine Foods has black apricots, which are delicious (as well they should be at $3.99/lb). Grilling season is in full force, as anyone knows who has walked from their door to the mailbox and back barefoot, and so anything grillable is prominently featured – as are salad greens, for seasonality and also possibly because when it’s 110° out the last thing anyone wants to do is cook. Rainier cherries are peaking.

Coming up this week are National Junk Food Day, National Ice Cream Day, National Vanilla Ice Cream Day, National Hot Fudge Sundae Day, National Coffee Milkshake Day, National Crème Brûlée Day, National Milk Chocolate Day, National Tequila Day, and National Scotch Day. This fourth week of July is National Salad Week. And of course, this weekend is the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

July 21st: National Ice Cream Day, National Junk Food Day
July 22nd: National Penuche Fudge Day
July 23rd: National Vanilla Ice Cream Day
July 24th: National Tequila Day
July 25th: National Hot Fudge Sundae Day*
July 26th: National Coffee Milkshake Day
July 27th: National Crème Brûlée Day, National Scotch Day
July 28th: National Milk Chocolate Day

* Apropos of National Hot Fudge Sundae Day, I offer Fuzzy Pink Niven's Law: Never waste calories. Potato chips, candy, whipped cream, or hot fudge sundae consumption may involve you, your dietician, your wardrobe, or other factors. But ... don't eat soggy potato chips, or cheap candy, or fake whipped cream, or an inferior hot fudge sundae.

The HIGHLY HIGHLY UNOFFICIAL NOT EVEN SLIGHTLY AN OFFICIAL WEIGHT WATCHERS PUBLICATION bargain guide, week beginning July 14th

This Sunday, the 18th, is National Caviar Day. Caviar has only 40 calories per one-tablespoon serving, is loaded with calcium, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, is highly anti-inflammatory, and contains in one serving your recommended daily allowance of Vitamin B-12. It is also shudderingly expensive, loaded with cholesterol, and tastes (to my unsophisticated palate at least, and in the inexpensive grades I’ve been able to get from Cost Plus) like a cheap grade of canned sardines mixed with an equal amount of salt. One tablespoon of caviar has a Points count of 1. You can have mine.

And now I think they’re just trying to confuse us, because the 17th is National Peach Ice Cream Day, the 20th is National Ice Cream Soda Day, the 21st is National Ice Cream Day, the 23rd is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day, and the 25th is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day. And the third Sunday of July, which this year falls on the 18th, is Sundae Sunday.

The 21st, one week from today, is also National Junk Food Day, a holiday better celebrated in the breach than the observance.

July 14th: Bastille Day, National Macaroni Day, National Grand Marnier Day
July 15th: National Tapioca Pudding Day
July 16th: National Corn Fritters Day
July 17th: National Peach Ice Cream Day
July 18th: National Caviar Day
July 19th: National Daiquiri Day
July 20th: National Lollipop Day, National Hot Dog Day, National Ice Cream Soda Day, Fortune Cookie Day
July 21st: National Ice Cream Day, National Junk Food Day

Bargain guide, week beginning July 7th

Oh, dear: we missed National Canned Luncheon Meat Week. (Lovely Spam! Wonderful Spam!) This is, however, National July Belongs To Blueberries Month, which should put paid to any notions you might have harbored that I make these holidays up -- I don't have that much imagination. The 10th is Pick Blueberries Day, and so you’ll have something to do with them, the next day is Blueberry Muffin Day.

July 7th: National Strawberry Sundae Day
July 8th: National Chocolate with Almonds Day
July 9th: National Sugar Cookie Day
July 10th: Pick Blueberries Day, National Piña Colada Day
July 11th: National Blueberry Muffin Day
July 12th: National Pecan Pie Day
July 13th: Beans 'n' Franks Day, National French Fries Day
July 14th: Macaroni Day, National Grand Marnier Day

In non-food connections: July 10th is Clerihew Day. A clerihew is a four-line biographical poem, of aabb rhyme scheme and often of irregular meter, something like this:

Debi Allen Duvall
Is the wisest of us all.
Showing great self control
She has five separate times returned to goal.

And one week from today is Bastille Day, so cook something French and healthy. Ça ira!

The latest from Consumerist: A lot of what’s sold in the US as “extra virgin olive oil” isn’t, because (unlike European Union countries) we have no legal definition (as yet) for “extra virgin”, and because what regulations we do have are “voluntarily enforced” so the oil may not even be olive. Only 12% of Americans know how many calories they should consume in a day. And, in a complete obliteration of the line between “content” and “advertising”, the site ScienceBlogs – hitherto devoted entirely to blots about, you know, science – has added to its list of blogs one called “Food Frontiers”, written and purchased by PepsiCo.

If you run across any good bargains that I've missed, or if you write a clerihew, please post it in comments.

Bargain guide, week beginning June 23rd

I am so, so sorry about forgetting to bring the flyers last week!

Today is National Pecan Sandy day, and there are low-fat or at least reduced-fat pecan sandies. The 25th – possibly in honor of The Championships At Wimbledon, where strawberries and cream is the traditional snack item – is National Strawberry Parfait Day, and I think a parfait made of fresh strawberries and fat-free Cool Whip would be very good and would probably take care of a fresh-fruits-and-veggies square in your Healthy Eating guidelines if you put enough strawberries in it.

June 23rd: National Pecan Sandy Day
June 24th: National Pralines Day
June 25th: National Strawberry Parfait Day
June 26th: National Chocolate Pudding Day
June 27th: National Indian Pudding Day, National Orange Blossom Day
June 28th: National Tapioca Day
June 29th: National Almond Buttercrunch Day
June 30th: National Ice Cream Soda Day

Jim and Alice, if you see this could you post in comments the link to the YouTube video you mentioned?

Happy Father's Day to all you fatherly types

Honestly, I am so embarrassed I want to crawl under the couch. I oh-so-carefully printed the flyers out, stapled them together ... and left them on my desk. I'm so sorry.

Anyway, herewith:

Wednesday was National Fudge Day. It’s over now so you’re nearly safe. Thursday (the 17th) is Eat Your Vegetables Day, so do that.

The 20th, being the third Sunday in June, is Sundae Sunday. All hail Golden Spoon.

June 16th: National Fudge Day
June 17th: National Eat Your Vegetables Day, National Apple Strudel Day
June 18th: National Cherry Tart Day, International Picnic Day
June 19th: National Dry Martini Day
June 20th: National Vanilla Milkshake Day
June 21st: National Peaches and Cream Day
June 22nd: National Onion Rings Day, National Chocolate Eclair Day
June 23rd: National Pecan Sandy Day

Again, my humblest apologies.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Welcome to June, which is (healthily) National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month, National Dairy Month and National Seafood Month, as well as (less so) National Candy Month. Tomorrow is National Egg Day; the day after is National Cheese Day and National Frozen Yogurt Day. The 6th is National Applesauce Cake Day: this may be workable as a low-Points option, which is more than can easily be said for the 8th, National Jelly Doughnut Day.

The first Rainier cherries are in. And while we weren’t looking, Tropicana was hit by what Consumerist calls the Grocery Shrink Ray: their “half-gallons” of orange juice now hold fifty-nine ounces, five ounces less than half a gallon.

Week beginning May 26

For people trying to lose weight, at least here in the Yewesser Vey, the year is divided into two primary seasons. Beginning in October and ending the day after Easter is Chocolate Season. There is a brief hiatus, and then Barbecue Season begins on Memorial Day weekend, peaks on Independence Day, and runs through Labor Day weekend.

This weekend is, of course, Memorial Day weekend, and Memorial Day Monday is both National Barbecue Day and National Hamburger/Cheeseburger Day, so prominent bargains for the week include anything that can be put on a grill.

May 29th is End of the Middle Ages Day (on May 29th, 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire; in reaction the Byzantine Greek scholars who had focused their work there scattered across Europe, triggering the Renaissance), so cook something medieval or Renaissancey: try the recipes at http://www.godecookery.com or http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/food.html. Most of them are redacted for the use of modern cooks, fortunately. (Although honestly, who doesn’t enjoy preparing a dish from a recipe that reads “Take Vele, an Make it clene, and hakke it to gobettys, an sethe it; an take fat brothe, an temper up þine Almaundys þat þou hast y-grounde, an lye it with Flowre of Rys, and do þer-to gode powder of Gyngere, & Galyngale, Canel, Maces, Quybybis, and Oynonys y-mynsyd, & Roysonys of coraunce, & coloure yt wyth Safroun, and put þer-to ðin Vele, & serue”?)

May 27th: National Grape Popsicle Day
May 28th: National Brisket Day
May 29th: National Coq au Vin Day
May 30th: National Mint Julep Day
May 31st: National Macaroon Day
June 1st: National Hazelnut Cake Day
June 2nd: National Rocky Road Ice Cream Day
June 3rd: National Egg Day
