Introductory matter for those to whom I haven’t mentioned it: this blog, and the weekly handout, are entirely my own production. I flip through each week’s supermarket flyers and type up those that strike me as of use, with particular emphasis on the healthy, the low in Points, and the unprocessed or minimally processed. This is not an official WW publication. That said:
At chow.com, there’s an article on how to make your own fruit leather -- out of real fruit, and out of the actual fruit you want to eat, or your kids want to eat. (Did you know that Strawberry Fruit Roll-Ups have absolutely no strawberries in them?) Fresh fruit is still healthier, though, lower in Points and does not glue itself to your teeth.
At Summer Tomato is an excellent article on keeping aware while eating, and how it can help you to actually eat less. (One handy tip: don’t visit a restaurant when you’re starving!) They've got another that I liked as well, on how to transform yourself into a slow eater.
Nabisco have surpassed themselves by producing an object called the Oreo Triple Double: a cookie, a layer of vanilla crème, a cookie, a layer of chocolate crème, and another cookie. According to the official nutritional-information page, this item has a PointsPlus count of 3 per twenty-one-gram “serving” – there are eighteen “servings” in a package, but the package is only thirteen ounces. Thus Nabisco have achieved a new record of sorts: a cookie product in which one serving is less than one cookie.
This Friday, the 19th, is both National Potato Day (remember, potatoes are high in moisture, have a fair amount of fiber, and are actually very good for you if you don’t fry them) and National Hot & Spicy Foods Day. So spice something up. Potatoes, maybe. One week from today is National Waffle Day. There is also an International Waffle Day, which is in March. I do not pretend to understand how this works.
August 17th: National Vanilla Custard Day
August 18th: National Soft Ice-Cream Day, National Ice-Cream Pie Day
August 19th: National Potato Day, National Hot & Spicy Foods Day; some sources have this as National Soft Ice-Cream Day
August 20th: National Lemonade Day, National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day
August 21st: National Pecan Torte Day
August 22nd: National Spumoni Day, Eat A Peach Day
August 23rd: National Sponge Cake Day
August 24th: National Peach Pie Day, National Waffle Day
After watching the weekend’s television coverage of the Iowa State Fair, I shall be perfectly satisfied never in my life to hear or read the phrase “deep-fried butter” again.

Bargain guide, week beginning August 10th
At Fooducate, an article on the top 10 healthy “convenience” foods. (Top of the list: fresh fruit. Next up are bagged salad greens, fish fillets {they take only a moment under the broiler}, whole grains {the author assumes you have a rice cooker}, and yogurt.)
Today is National S’mores Day. I cannot imagine that a single S’more is all that high in Points. Tomorrow is National Raspberry Tart Day. We are in the middle of the second week of August, which is National Apple Week. This is not to be confused with National Apple Month, which rather bafflingly comes in September, October and November. I suppose this says a great deal for the popularity of apples. Or perhaps for the powers of the apple-growers’ lobby.
I should probably mention more often that neither this blog nor the corresponding handout are in any remotest way, shape, form, or fashion official publications of Weight Watchers of America. Not even slightly. Noop.

A new metastudy published in the medical journal Circulation shows that people who get even a little bit of moderate exercise, 150 minutes/week (that’s just over 20 minutes/day!), have a markedly lower risk of coronary heart disease than those who don’t. The more the better, of course, but any at all helps. So it really can be just as simple as “Move More!”
Welcome to August, which is National Peach Month, National Sandwich Month, National Goat Cheese Month, and National Watermelon Month just to name the healthier options. Fruit is peaking. Eat it. Eat lots. Rainier cherries are nearly everywhere, other stone fruits are everywhere. Eat them.
How’s your garden coming along? The evening of the 8th, next Monday, is National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Night.

Bargain guide, week beginning July 27th
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has proposed rules for proper labeling of raw meat and poultry containing “added solutions”. Many packers inject poultry with what’s described as “a saltwater broth and binders that enhance its flavor” – but labels aren’t required to say so. So not only are you often paying chicken prices for water, buy you may be getting six times the amount of salt in unprocessed chicken! It may be some time before labels are revised: for now, you can at least keep an eye out for labels that say “enhanced with broth” or anything similar – you could be buying up to 15% water.
At Consumerist I found a link to Center for Science in the Public Interest’s latest, and highly entertaining, list of the most calorically appalling menu items. Included are Cheesecake Factory’s “Farmhouse Cheeseburger” (with “smoked pork belly cheddar” and a FRIED EGG) and Coldstone Creamery’s “PB&C Shake” (which CSPI compares to “drinking two 16-ounce t-bone steaks plus a buttered baked potato”).
(Of course one does not visit Cheesecake Factory primarily for lean-and-healthy items. The last time they tried to institute a lean-and-healthy menu item, it was their” Weight Management Asian Chicken Salad”, which made Consumerist’s list of “7 Restaurant Dishes Too Embarrassing to Order”.)
Tomorrow is National Milk Chocolate Day. This Friday, the 29th, is – as inexplicably as ever – National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day. I have never been able to find any reasoning behind this except for speculations that it may have something to do with buying cheese to sacrifice in mouse traps. This Sunday, the 31st, is National Jump For Jelly Beans Day. And now you know why newspeople call this “the silly season.”

Bargain guide, week beginning July 20th
At Good magazine, by way of Fooducate, the question is, does nutrition labeling really affect what foods people choose? And if it does, why has obesity risen so sharply in recent years? The article quotes behavior economist George Loewenstein (italics mine):
Massachusetts has just passed nutrition guidelines regarding foods sold in school vending machines and concession stands. They now have to have less than 35% of their calories from fat, less than 20% from saturated fat, and less than 30% from sugars. No sugary drinks and nothing fried.
July is National Ice-Cream Month: the 7th was National Strawberry Sundae Day, the 17th was National Peach Ice-Cream Day (and was as well Sundae Sunday), today is National Ice-Cream Soda Day, tomorrow is National Ice-Cream Day, the 23rd is National Vanilla Ice-Cream Day, and the 25th is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day. And I am starting to get an ice-cream headache.

Calorie labeling, in effect, puts the onus of weight reduction on consumers, but consumers have not grown fat because they have stopped paying attention to what they eat; they have grown fat because processed food has become cheaper (both in terms of money and time), whereas fresh food has become more expensive.

Bargain guide, week beginning July 13th
Scandal! Michelle Obama was seen eating in public! The FLOTUS – champion of child nutrition, advocate of exercise, person who helped get rid of the outdated USDA “Food Pyramid” – actually went to Washington’s newest Shake Shack and ordered (horrors!) a burger, fries, and a milkshake. Because the world will fly out of its orbit and plummet into the sun if a healthy-eating advocate is even once seen to indulge. (Also eating is a shameful thing for women to be seen doing. If you have to eat, ladies, do it in private. And wash your hands afterwards.)
The 13th was National Beans ’n’ Franks Day. At possibly the opposite end of the perceived food-classiness spectrum, the 18th, next Monday, is National Caviar Day. Did you know that a one-half-ounce serving of caviar is loaded with B vitamins and has only 40 calories? Did you know that it also has nearly one-third of your daily allowance of cholesterol?
The 17th, being the third Sunday in July, is Sundae Sunday! It comes on the heels of National Fresh Spinach Day on the 16th. I happen to like fresh spinach.
July 13th: National Beans ’n’ Franks Day, National French Fries Day
July 14th: Bastille Day (Ça ira!), National Macaroni Day, National Grand Marnier Day
July 15th: National Gummy Worm Day, National Tapioca Pudding Day, St Swithin's Day (it's said that whatever weather you have on St. Swithin's Day will prevail for the next forty days: I cannot vouch for this)
July 16th: National Corn Fritters Day
July 17th: National Peach Ice-Cream Day
July 18th: National Caviar Day
July 19th: National Daiquiri Day
July 20th: National Lollipop Day, National Hot Dog Day, National Ice-Cream Soda Day, National Fortune Cookie Day

Bargain guide, week beginning July 6th
Promotions this week are long on beef and pork, the idea apparently being that even though Independence Day has passed, the WORLD WILL END if you do not grill something. Stone fruits are delicious and everywhere.
Tomorrow is National Strawberry Sundae Day – all hail Golden Spoon. The 10th is both Pick Blueberries Day and National Piña Colada Day, not a combination I’d anticipated but it might be tasty, and if there are any berries left the 11th is National Blueberry Muffin Day. One week from today is Beans ’n’ Franks Day and National Ice Cream Day. It’s also National French Fries Day, appropriately one day before Bastille Day. Ça ira!
July 6th: National Fried Chicken Day
July 7th: National Strawberry Sundae Day, Chocolate Day (according to some sources), Macaroni Day, National Ice Cream Cone Day
July 8th: National Chocolate with Almonds Day
