Disclaimer, which I should add to the handout (and this blog) more frequently: You are reading my hobby. You are not reading any sort of remotely official Weight Watchers publication. Not even slightly. Noop.
Today is National Wine Day, and also National Brown Bag It Day, although for the sake of your reputation I do not suggest you combine the two. Tomorrow is National Cherry Dessert Day, and if you make your dessert a bag of fresh cherries all by themselves that is a Points-free dessert. Slap anyone who tries to take them away. The 27th is Grape Popsicle Day, and if you spin some grapes in your food processor until they are mush and then freeze them in a popsicle mold that too is Points-free and will not turn your tongue purple.
May 25th: National Wine Day, National Brown-Bag It Day
May 26th: National Cherry Dessert Day, National Blueberry Cheesecake Day
May 27th: National Grape Popsicle Day
May 28th: National Brisket Day
May 29th: National Coq au Vin Day
May 30th: National Mint Julep Day, National Hamburger Day, National Barbecue Day
May 31st: National Macaroon Day
June 1st: National Hazelnut Cake Day
For easily deducible reasons the heaviest promotions this week are for anything that can be cooked on a grill, which these days includes very nearly everything short of peas, but the strongest emphases will be on burgers, hotdogs, and large sections of large animals.
At Fooducate, we learn that fifteen Walgreen’s stores in the San Francisco Bay area are to start carrying a selection of fresh fruits and veggies! I hope this trend spreads nationwide.

Bargain guide, week beginning May 18th
The 20th, this Friday, is National Pick Strawberries Day. I don’t know of any place in our area where you can do that unless you planted them yourself, but they’re in season and the day after is National Strawberries And Cream Day. One week from today is both National Brown Bag It Day and National Wine Day, an interesting combination which calls up unfortunate images of drinking wine out of a brown paper bag.
Fooducate has a link to a terrific New York Times article about foods being marketed as “healthy”, and whether this is really about food and health, or about marketing. “Take the average American supermarket – 50,000 products give or take a few. Notice how ALL OF THEM are somehow labeled good for you. If it’s high in fat – it will boast low sugar. If it’s super sugary – it’s low fat. Full of artificial colors and sweeteners? No worries, it’s a perfect low calorie treat. Overly processed? No problem, pump it up with added vitamins and minerals. If all these foods are so healthy, how come we are all getting so fat and sick?”

Bargain guide, week beginning May 11th
Sorry for the delay: Blogger has been up and down.
May. National Beef Month, National Barbecue Month, and fortunately also National Salad Month. The 11th was National Eat What You Want Day, and we in WW know the counterpoint to that: eat what you want, and stop when you’re satisfied.
At chow.com there’s a set of recipes for veggie chips! They give carrot chips (very long and narrow), taro chips, sweet potato chips (quite pretty – the edges ruffle), and kale chips which is a new one on me.
May 11th: National Eat What You Want Day, National Mocha Torte Day
May 12th: National Nutty Fudge Day
May 13th: National Apple Pie Day, National Fruit Cocktail Day
May 14th: National Buttermilk Biscuit Day
May 15th: National Chocolate Chip Day
May 16th: National Coquilles St. Jacques Day
May 17th: National Cherry Cobbler Day
May 18th: National Cheese Soufflé Day

Bargain guide, week beginning May 4th
’Tis May, and I think we can safely say the cold weather has broken for the year. Today is National Homebrew Day. I’ve never brewed beer myself and am a bit afraid to try. It’s also National Orange Juice Day. Tomorrow, of course, is Cinco de Mayo – and, unsurprisingly, “Totally Chipotle Day”.
The Federal Trade Commission has just published a proposal with guidelines (not regulations) for how foods should and should not be marketed to children. Did you know that for American kids 2 to 18 years old, the biggest sources of caloric intake are cookies/cakes, pizza, and soft drinks? And while we’re on the topic of calories and their sources, the Corn Refiners’ Association is being sued by a group of cane-sugar companies (including C&H) over the neologism “corn sugar”.

Bargain guide, week beginning April 27th
Today is National Prime Rib Day, but it’s a bit late to start now. This Saturday, the 30th, is National Oatmeal Cookie Day, and I know there are ways to make those low in Points. It’s also National Raisin Day, so add raisins.
May begins on Sunday: National Egg Month, National Asparagus Month (yum), National Salad Month, National Strawberry Month, National Salsa Month, and National Mediterranean Diet Month. The 2nd, this coming Monday, is National Truffle Day: there are two kinds of truffles, one high in Points but easily accessible, the other Points-free but shudderingly expensive.

Bargain guide, week beginning April 20th
Saturday is National Picnic Day! Pack up your lunches and get outside before the heat sets in. The 25th is National Zucchini Bread Day, and the Internet is just full of low-fat zucchini bread recipes. This fourth week of April is National Egg Salad Week too, if you were wondering what to put in your picnic.
Friday is National Hot Cross Buns Day. (“I have hot cross buns!” “Well, wear a long coat and they won’t show!”) I have been told but cannot confirm that if you keep a hot cross bun in your house from one Good Friday to the next, your house will not burn down all that year. Sunday, being Easter, is National Baked Ham with Pineapple Day and also the official end of chocolate season for this year. I am searching for Russell Stover Chocolate Mini Bunnies – they come in a package of 42 chocolate bunnies the size of M&Ms. (But wouldn’t that make it hard to bite off the ears?)
April 20th: National Food Day, National Pineapple Upside Down Cake Day, Lima Bean Respect Day
April 21st: Chocolate Covered Cashew Truffle Day
April 22nd: Earth Day, National Jelly Bean Day

April 24th: National Pigs In A Blanket Day

April 27th: National Prime Rib Day

Courtesy of Fooducate, an interesting interactive graphic at CivilEats showing how calorie consumption in the US has risen over the past forty years. In 1970, the average American consumed 2168 calories per day. By 2008, that number had risen to 2673.
Fooducate also has an interesting article discounting the “all calories are equal” notion. Turns out you burn FAR more calories eating and digesting whole or minimally-processed foods than you do consuming highly processed foods: subjects who ate sandwiches made of whole-grain bread and real cheese burned almost twice as many calories digesting them as people who ate sandwiches with the same calorie and fat count, but made from white bread and process cheese. (The author also gives WW a polite nod for the new PointsPlus “free fruit” system!)
The 15th – the day after tomorrow – is National Glazed Spiral Ham Day. Hey, it freezes well. The day after is a good combination, both National Eggs Benedict Day and Day of the Mushroom. And one week from today is Lima Bean Respect Day. (I recently found a wartime recipe that was a perfect example of why lima beans get so little respect: I shall append it to this posting. It looks, um, very high in protein.)
Third week of April: National Bubblegum Week, National Week of the Ocean
April 13th: National Peach Cobbler Day
April 14th: National Pecan Day
April 15th: National Glazed Spiral Ham Day
April 16th: National Eggs Benedict Day, Day of the Mushroom
April 17th: National Cheeseball Day, Healthy Kids Day
April 18th: Birthday of Animal Crackers
April 19th: National Garlic Day, National Amaretto Day (I recommend taking these separately)
April 20th: Lima Bean Respect Day, National Pineapple Upside Down Cake Day

BAKED LIMA AND SALMON LOAF
Perpetrated by the California Lima Bean Growers Association, March 1940. It is described as "thrifty" and, possibly more creatively, as "a Lenten delight for appetites and budgets".
3 cups cooked limas
2 cups soft bread crumbs
1 cup flaked canned salmon
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 cup canned tomatoes
1/3 cup chopped green pepper
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped pimiento
2 slightly beaten eggs
1/4 cup buttered crumbs
Mash limas and combine with all ingredients except buttered crumbs. Place in greased 5 1/2" x 7" loaf pan and sprinkle with buttered crumbs. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) about 45 minutes. Serves 8.
PointsPlus count per serving: 5. I think some added onion would not be amiss, nor would it adversely affect the Points count.
