Bargain guide, week beginning September 7th

Chow.com has a number of good articles: one on “healthy snack ideas for kids’ lunchboxes” that might also provide ideas for grownups’ snacks as well, and one on how to brew your own beer. There is also one at which I have not even glanced, with the unfortunate title: “Eating the Placenta: Tastes like squab!” NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

The Fooducate app for iPhone and iPod touch is available here. At their blog, Fooducate has a recipe for homemade hummus, and what I can only describe as a rant about how food nutrition labels should be changed. Top priority: Please do SOMETHING about “Servings per container: 2.5”!

The day after tomorrow is National Steak au Poivre Day: it’s very easy to make but a mortar helps. One week from today is National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day, which I may honor in the breach rather than the observance. The 10th is National TV Dinners Day. The first TV dinners came in a box printed with a TV, just because in the 1950s “TV” implied “the very latest and coolest thing” – the idea of eating them in front of the TV came later.

September 7th: National Acorn Squash Day, National Napoleon Day
September 8th: National Date Nut Bread Day
September 9th: Weinerschnitzel Day, National Steak au Poivre Day
September 10th: National TV Dinner Day, Hot Dog Day
September 11th: National Hot Cross Buns Day ("I have hot cross buns!" "Well, wear a long coat and they won't show!")
September 12th: National Chocolate Milkshake Day
September 13th: National Peanut Day, Snack A Pickle Day, International Chocolate Day
September 14th: Eat A Hoagie Day, National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day
