Bargain guide, week beginning September 14th

Chow.com, once again plumbing the baffling depths of “Why on earth would you do that?”, has a short video on how to make a Spanish egg dish out of “leftover potato chips”. More appealing, they’ve got a collection of “hot and spicy” recipes – including how to pickle your own peppers without the help of Peter Piper – and a page on how to make your own granola without oats. And the answer to the always interesting question, do you burn more calories eating celery than you take in? (No. Chewing expends only about five calories per hour. That said, it’s not easy to gain weight eating celery.)

And at Summer Tomato, there’s an excellent posting on “non-exercise activity”, or “how to burn more calories without breaking a sweat”:
Unlike structured, high-intensity exercise, walking and other low-intensity movements don’t make you hungrier. There’s good evidence that increasing your daily activity can burn hundreds of extra calories each day and may be one of the most effective ways to impact your energy balance (i.e. burn more without eating more). Importantly, non-exercise activity correlates with body weight in obese as well as normal weight individuals, so everyone can benefit from extra movement.

Holidays and history: Today is both Eat A Hoagie Day and National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day. Do both, if you like, they’re your Bonus Points to spend. Friday is Mexican Independence Day and, perhaps not coincidentally, National Guacamole Day. The 18th is National Cheeseburger Day, and one week from today is the International Banana Festival.

Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born this date in 1849: yes, Pavlov, as in “Pavlov’s dogs”, as in “Look at that restaurant commercial OH MY GOSH WHY AM I SUDDENLY SO HUNGRY”. September 18th 1947, Reynolds Wrap went on sale for the first time; September 19th 1947 marks the first utterance of the phrase, “Does the shiny side go inside or outside?”
