Bargain guide, week beginning July 13th

Scandal! Michelle Obama was seen eating in public! The FLOTUS – champion of child nutrition, advocate of exercise, person who helped get rid of the outdated USDA “Food Pyramid” – actually went to Washington’s newest Shake Shack and ordered (horrors!) a burger, fries, and a milkshake. Because the world will fly out of its orbit and plummet into the sun if a healthy-eating advocate is even once seen to indulge. (Also eating is a shameful thing for women to be seen doing. If you have to eat, ladies, do it in private. And wash your hands afterwards.)

The 13th was National Beans ’n’ Franks Day. At possibly the opposite end of the perceived food-classiness spectrum, the 18th, next Monday, is National Caviar Day. Did you know that a one-half-ounce serving of caviar is loaded with B vitamins and has only 40 calories? Did you know that it also has nearly one-third of your daily allowance of cholesterol?

The 17th, being the third Sunday in July, is Sundae Sunday! It comes on the heels of National Fresh Spinach Day on the 16th. I happen to like fresh spinach.

July 13th: National Beans ’n’ Franks Day, National French Fries Day
July 14th: Bastille Day (Ça ira!), National Macaroni Day, National Grand Marnier Day
July 15th: National Gummy Worm Day, National Tapioca Pudding Day, St Swithin's Day (it's said that whatever weather you have on St. Swithin's Day will prevail for the next forty days: I cannot vouch for this)
July 16th: National Corn Fritters Day
July 17th: National Peach Ice-Cream Day
July 18th: National Caviar Day
July 19th: National Daiquiri Day
July 20th: National Lollipop Day, National Hot Dog Day, National Ice-Cream Soda Day, National Fortune Cookie Day

Bargain guide, week beginning July 6th

Promotions this week are long on beef and pork, the idea apparently being that even though Independence Day has passed, the WORLD WILL END if you do not grill something. Stone fruits are delicious and everywhere.

Tomorrow is National Strawberry Sundae Day – all hail Golden Spoon. The 10th is both Pick Blueberries Day and National Piña Colada Day, not a combination I’d anticipated but it might be tasty, and if there are any berries left the 11th is National Blueberry Muffin Day. One week from today is Beans ’n’ Franks Day and National Ice Cream Day. It’s also National French Fries Day, appropriately one day before Bastille Day. Ça ira!

July 6th: National Fried Chicken Day
July 7th: National Strawberry Sundae Day, Chocolate Day (according to some sources), Macaroni Day, National Ice Cream Cone Day
July 8th: National Chocolate with Almonds Day

Bargain guide, week beginning June 29th

H/t to Fooducate: the New England Journal of Medicine (links at the blog) has just published a study on correlations between people’s weight gains and losses and WHAT they ate, not just how many calories they took in. “4-year weight change was most strongly associated with the intake of potato chips (1.69 lb), potatoes (1.28 lb), sugar-sweetened beverages (1.00 lb), unprocessed red meats (0.95 lb), and processed meats (0.93 lb)”, while there was an inverse association of weight gain with consumption of vegetables (-0.22 lb), whole grains (-0.37 lb), fruits (-0.49 lb), nuts (-0.57 lb), and yogurt (-0.82 lb). (What’s that you say? You thought potatoes were healthy? Yes, they are – but in the American diet, their main use is as French fries.)

Welcome, the day after tomorrow, to July. Monday, as everyone knows, is National Barbecue And Blow Something Up Day. It is actually National Barbecued Spareribs Day, immediately following National Eat Beans Day, and set in National Baked Bean Month, National Bison Month, National Grilling Month, National Hot Dog Month, National Ice-Cream Month, and National July Belongs To Blueberries Month. Biggest promotions this week: ribs, beer, sweet corn, anything grillable, and marshmallows.

June 29th: National Almond Buttercrunch Day

Not much in the way of food news this week. At Fooducate there’s a good article on exactly what’s meant by such terms as “all-natural”, “grass-fed”, and “free-range” on meat and poultry labels.

Also, Yoplait has discontinued an advertisement the National Eating Disorders Association called “seriously problematic” – the “raspberry cheesecake” ad that showed a woman (already thin) standing at the fridge demonstrating classically disordered obsessive thinking, such as, “What if I just had a small slice? I was good today, I deserve it. Or I could have a medium slice and some celery sticks and they would cancel each other out, right? Or, okay, I could have one large slice and jog in place as I eat it. Or how about one large slice while jogging in place followed by eight celery sticks … ”

Jim -- thanks!

Courtesy of Fooducate: if you purchased Rice Krispies or Cocoa Krispies between June 1st, 2009 and March 1st, 2010, you may be entitled to a cash refund from a class-action settlement. (During that period, Kellogg Company was advertising both cereals as supporting an eater’s immune system although they had no clinical evidence to support this.) If you’re interested go to http://www.cerealadvertisingsettlement.com – the settlement is for a maximum of $2.5 million, and you may get $15 out of it. (One wonders what percentage the lawyers are getting.)

Tomorrow is National Eat All Your Veggies Day. I still say that if vegetables were meant for human consumption, we wouldn’t have to douse them in butter or cheese sauce to disguise their essential vegetable nature. Next Tuesday, the 21st, is National Peaches and Cream Day: the cream is not Points-free, I’m afraid. Nor is a dry Martini, even on the 19th, National Dry Martini Day.

June 15th: National Lobster Day
June 16th: National Fudge Day
June 17th: Eat All Your Veggies Day, National Apple Strudel Day
June 18th: National Cherry Tart Day (not to be confused with National Cherry Pie Day, which is on February 20th)
June 19th: National Dry Martini Day
June 20th: National Vanilla Milkshake Day
June 21st: National Peaches and Cream Day
June 22nd: National Onion Rings Day, National Chocolate Eclair Day

Bargain guide, week beginning June 8th

The main reason to keep on having summers in the first place, as far as I’m concerned, is the fresh fruit. SuperTarget and the ranch market on Main at 48th both have Rainier cherries I’ve seen – I can’t remember the price at Target, but at the ranch market they were $3.99/lb. I ate half a bag of them (Points-free!) on my way home last night.

Friday is National Herbs and Spices Day, so spice something up. Monday, the 13th, is my own official holiday: Kitchen Klutzes of America Day. (Suffice it to say that it is only in the past ten years I have been able to step into a kitchen without my friends preparing to alert Poison Control, the fire marshals, and the Environmental Protection Agency.)

June 8th: Jelly-Filled Doughnuts Day, World Oceans Day
June 9th: National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day
June 10th: National Herbs and Spices Day, National Iced Tea Day, National Black Cow Day
June 11th: National German Chocolate Cake Day*
June 12th: National Chacaça Day, National Peanut Butter Cookie Day
June 13th: Kitchen Klutzes of America Day
June 14th: National Strawberry Shortcake Day (the dessert, not the dolls)
June 15th: National Lobster Day

* German chocolate cake is not from Germany. It originated in the United States, specifically on the back of a German's Baking Chocolate package.

Latest from Fooducate: did you know that a large A&W root beer milkshake contains over half a pound of sugar? That sproinging sound you just heard? That was the meter in your Points calculator pegging.

Bargain guide, week beginning June 1st

June! National Dairy Month, National Seafood Month, National Beefsteak Month, National Frozen Yogurt Month (all hail Golden Spoon!), and National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month -- also National Candy Month, National Iced Tea Month, National Papaya Month, and -- inexplicably -- Turkey Lovers' Month.

The 3rd is National Egg Day – and, being the first Friday in June, National Doughnut Day. Hey, it’s only once a year. Or not quite, since the 8th is National Jelly Filled Doughnut Day. I do not make these things up:

June 1st: National Hazelnut Cake Day
June 2nd: National Rocky Road Ice-Cream Day
June 3rd: National Egg Day
June 4th: National Cheese Day, National Frozen Yogurt Day (All hail Golden Spoon!), National Cognac Day
June 5th: National Gingerbread Day
June 6th: National Applesauce Cake Day
June 7th: National Chocolate Ice-Cream Day
June 8th: National Jelly Filled Doughnut Day, World Oceans Day

Courtesy of the New York Times by way of Fooducate, tomorrow the USDA is going to dispose of its “Food Pyramid”, which has been utterly baffling us all for a quarter century. Here is the original, reasonably understandable Food Pyramid compared with its 2005 iteration:

The first makes at least some sense, although it doesn’t distinguish between whole and refined grains, but the second is completely incomprehensible. Starting tomorrow, we’re going to see a Food Plate, cut into wedges to represent relative portions of various foods, and with half the plate devoted to (yay) fruits and veggies!
