MSNBC reports, as if fully expecting us to be astonished at this information, that grocery prices are rising. Beef prices are up 10% over the past year, pork prices 7.5%. As if to compensate, they offer an article with tips on less-expensive protein sources, including beans-and-rice (a more complete protein than beans alone), eggs, dairy, quinoa, and just eating less meat.
At Chow.com there’s a collection of pumpkin recipes, including a roasted-pumpkin soup that looks quite tasty and has a PointsPlus count of 5 per serving. (Chow.com is also reaching a bit, featuring a recipe for homemade Pixy Stix in such traditional flavors as “black sesame”, “chile tamarind”, and “spruce tip”.)
I also found an interesting piece at Alternet (yeah, I know, but give me a chance) exploring the question, why do we eat – or why are we so commonly persuaded that we should eat – three meals a day? (For much of Western history, “breakfast” was a snack – perhaps bread and beer or watered wine – to literally break one's fast and tide the eater over until dinner, the big midday meal.) The article comes to no real conclusion, just recommending that you go with whichever system – two meals, three meals, three-meals-three-snacks – works for you, while remembering that the food industry makes its profits by persuading you that you’re hungry whether you are or not.
At Summer Tomato, Darya Pino offers “10 Simple Ways to Eat Less Without Noticing”.
Tomorrow, October 20th, is National Brandied Fruit Day – unfortunately it is far too late to start in time, because brandied fruit takes at least a month, but you can still start it for next year. The 23rd is National Canning Day and the birthday of Nicholas Appert, who invented the canning process; the 25th is National Greasy Foods Day, to be honored in the breach rather than the observance. The 25th also commemorates the introduction, in 1955, of the first microwave oven for home use. It was from Tappan and cost $1,295, which would be $10,424.05 today. One hardly imagines it was an instant success.
October 19th: National Seafood Bisque Day; birthday (1962) of Evander Holyfield, whose ear was to serve Mike Tyson as an hors d'oeurve in 1997; anniversary of the first (1917) making of Salvation Army doughnuts
October 20th: National Brandied Fruit Day
October 21st: Caramel Apple Day, National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day
October 22nd: National Nut Day (not to be confused with Grab Some Nuts Day, on August 3rd); birthday (1896) of Charles Glen King, discoverer of Vitamin C
October 23rd: National Boston Cream Pie Day, National Canning Day; birthday of Nicholas Appert (in 1749, 1750, or 1752)
October 24th: National Bologna Day, Feast of Good & Plenty
October 25th: World Pasta Day, National Greasy Foods Day
October 26th: National Pumpkin Day, National Pretzel Day, National Mince Meat Pie Day; birthday (1854) of C. W. Post, inventor of Postum, Grape-Nuts, and Post Toasties

Bargain guide, week beginning October 12th
Happy Birthday to Jean Nidetch, founder of Weight Watchers!
News: From Fooducate, a new study in the Archives of Internal Medicine (forty thousand women, tracked over a quarter-century) has found that “multivitamins consumed by older women do not increase lifespan”. I’ll probably keep taking mine anyway, though.
Chow.com has a recipe for a Halloween-party punch that actually glows under a blacklight. Yes, without poisoning you. It’s a grownup punch, not for kids, involving Cointreau, pisco, pineapple juice, and (the critical ingredient) quinine water. And if you fill rubber gloves with tonic water and freeze them, you get frozen glowing ice hands to float in your punchbowl, how cool is that?
Per Consumerist.com, the heat and drought of this past summer have wrought a lot of damage on peanut crops: the price of peanuts has gone from $450/ton to $1150/ton (the print version said "$1250" -- that was a typo), and peanut butter is certain to reflect that rise. Jif is preparing for a wholesale price rise of 30% in November.
Darya, at Summer Tomato, has an entertaining post about what we’re eating and how much of it comes directly from the Matrix: “Twinkies and McNuggets are engineered. They do not come from the earth and are not food.”

Bargain guide, week beginning October 5th
Don’t forget to bring your food contributions to next week’s meeting!
From Fooducate.com: Denmark has instituted the world’s first tax on fatty foods! Effective immediately, all foods with a saturated fat content of 2.3% or higher will be taxed at a rate of 8¢ per ounce. Discuss! Good? Bad? (Denmark’s obesity rate is only 10%: in the US it’s 30%). Fooducate also has – clickable at the blog – an excellent history of food and nutrition labeling in the US. Did you know that the first standards for packaged-food content weren’t passed until 1939? And they only applied to canned tomatoes and tomato paste?
At Chow.com there’s a good video on how to roast vegetables. The trick is to spread them out, oil them (there’s a way to work in one of your healthy oils), and get the oven HOT: “anything lower than 500 degrees Fahrenheit is baking, not roasting.” And appropriately, at Summer Tomato there’s an article about roasting delicata squash!
This second week in October is National School Lunch Week and National Beer Week – THESE TWO ARE NOT TO BE REGARDED AS COMPATIBLE – as well as National Food Bank Week. This Sunday, the 9th, is Moldy Cheese Day – both the intentional and the unintentional sorts, I imagine. And one week from today is Jean Nidetch’s birthday!

Bargain guide, week beginning September 28th
At recent meetings we’ve discussed the issue of whole grains in processed foods, and of the distinction to be made between something “made from whole grains” and something “made with whole grains”. At Fooducate.com there’s a piece on the preposterous notion of “Multi-Grain Pringles”. Top ingredient: refined rice flour, followed by fat, potatoes, and corn flour. Barley flour and wheat bran are relegated to the “Contains 2% or less of” section. Multi-Grain Pringles contain more triglycerol mono-oleate than they do barley or wheat bran. I don’t even know what that is.
Also at Fooducate, a recipe for “baked oatmeal” that looks tasty for breakfast and is (says right here!) only a PointsPlus count of 4 for one serving!
Speaking of breakfasts, Chow.com has a good selection of “easy hot breakfasts in 15 minutes”. Some are more WW-friendly than others – I don’t know that the grilled cream cheese and jam sandwich would be my first choice, although it sounds tasty – but topping a whole-grain English muffin with peanut butter (or any other nut butter), slicing a banana onto it, sprinkling it with brown sugar and slipping it under the broiler for three minutes doesn’t sound too bad: protein, fruit, and whole grain all right there.
Tomorrow is the 29th, Michaelmas: it’s said that whoever eats goose on Michaelmas Day will never be short of money. There is a certain logic to this, as anyone who can afford goose is likely to be, ahem, financially secure.
And so begins October: National Applejack Month, National Chili Month, National Pickled Peppers Month, National Seafood Month, National Pretzel Month, Eat Country Ham Month, Fair Trade Month, Vegetarian Awareness Month, Celebrate Sundried Tomatoes Month, Gourmet Adventures Month, and the second consecutive National Apple Month. This first week of October is also National Chili Week, and October 1st commemorates the opening of the first Piggly-Wiggly store in 1916 – the first self-service supermarket.
September 28th: Drink Beer Day, National Strawberry Creme Pie Day
September 29th: National Coffee Day, National Mocha Day
September 30th: National Mulled Cider Day
October 1st: World Vegetarian Day, Homemade Cookies Day, Chocolate Season begins, Pudding Season begins
October 2nd: National French Fried Scallops Day; singer Don McLean ("American Pie") born, 1945
October 3rd: National Caramel Custard Day
October 4th: National Taco Day, National Vodka Day
October 5th: National Apple Betty Day

Bargain guide, week beginning September 21st
Thanks to one member tonight for mentioning BountifulBaskets!
Chow.com has a nice selection of recipes for homemade energy bars! At Summer Tomato there’s a posting on learning to like foods you don’t like. And from Atlantic magazine there’s a chart showing exactly what the “average American” eats in a year. For a start, the av.Am. consumes 31.4 pounds of cheese, 600 pounds of dairy products not in cheese form, 415 lbs of vegetables (of which 56 lbs is corn), 110 lbs of red meat, 85 lbs (that is not a typo!) of fats and oils, and 24 lbs of “coffee, cocoa, and nuts”. That includes – every year – 29 pounds of French fries, 23 pounds of pizza, 24 pounds of ice-cream, and 0.2 pounds of caffeine.
From Consumerist: Olive Garden and Red Lobster are planning to cut fat and sodium in their meals by 10% over the next five years. They’re also going to make veggies rather than potato the default side dish on kids’ meals.
And the Food and Drug Administration are nagging the Corn Refiners’ Association about the current attempt to rebrand high-fructose corn syrup as “corn sugar”. Turns out there’s already something called “corn sugar”. It’s more commonly called “dextrose”.
At PBS.com’s “Food” blog, you have one week to submit questions about cooking for Rosh Hashanah: Joan Nathan (author of Jewish Cooking in America) will answer the best five.
Tomorrow is National Ice-Cream Cone Day, and the day after is National White Chocolate Day. Sunday is National Crabmeat Newburg Day – you don’t have to eat it, Debi, I’ll eat yours. And one week from today is Drink Beer Day.

Bargain guide, week beginning September 14th
Chow.com, once again plumbing the baffling depths of “Why on earth would you do that?”, has a short video on how to make a Spanish egg dish out of “leftover potato chips”. More appealing, they’ve got a collection of “hot and spicy” recipes – including how to pickle your own peppers without the help of Peter Piper – and a page on how to make your own granola without oats. And the answer to the always interesting question, do you burn more calories eating celery than you take in? (No. Chewing expends only about five calories per hour. That said, it’s not easy to gain weight eating celery.)
And at Summer Tomato, there’s an excellent posting on “non-exercise activity”, or “how to burn more calories without breaking a sweat”:
Holidays and history: Today is both Eat A Hoagie Day and National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day. Do both, if you like, they’re your Bonus Points to spend. Friday is Mexican Independence Day and, perhaps not coincidentally, National Guacamole Day. The 18th is National Cheeseburger Day, and one week from today is the International Banana Festival.

And at Summer Tomato, there’s an excellent posting on “non-exercise activity”, or “how to burn more calories without breaking a sweat”:
Unlike structured, high-intensity exercise, walking and other low-intensity movements don’t make you hungrier. There’s good evidence that increasing your daily activity can burn hundreds of extra calories each day and may be one of the most effective ways to impact your energy balance (i.e. burn more without eating more). Importantly, non-exercise activity correlates with body weight in obese as well as normal weight individuals, so everyone can benefit from extra movement.

Bargain guide, week beginning September 7th
Chow.com has a number of good articles: one on “healthy snack ideas for kids’ lunchboxes” that might also provide ideas for grownups’ snacks as well, and one on how to brew your own beer. There is also one at which I have not even glanced, with the unfortunate title: “Eating the Placenta: Tastes like squab!” NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.
The Fooducate app for iPhone and iPod touch is available here. At their blog, Fooducate has a recipe for homemade hummus, and what I can only describe as a rant about how food nutrition labels should be changed. Top priority: Please do SOMETHING about “Servings per container: 2.5”!
The day after tomorrow is National Steak au Poivre Day: it’s very easy to make but a mortar helps. One week from today is National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day, which I may honor in the breach rather than the observance. The 10th is National TV Dinners Day. The first TV dinners came in a box printed with a TV, just because in the 1950s “TV” implied “the very latest and coolest thing” – the idea of eating them in front of the TV came later.
September 7th: National Acorn Squash Day, National Napoleon Day
September 8th: National Date Nut Bread Day
September 9th: Weinerschnitzel Day, National Steak au Poivre Day
September 10th: National TV Dinner Day, Hot Dog Day

September 12th: National Chocolate Milkshake Day
September 13th: National Peanut Day, Snack A Pickle Day, International Chocolate Day
September 14th: Eat A Hoagie Day, National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day

September 7th: National Acorn Squash Day, National Napoleon Day
September 8th: National Date Nut Bread Day
September 9th: Weinerschnitzel Day, National Steak au Poivre Day
September 10th: National TV Dinner Day, Hot Dog Day
September 11th: National Hot Cross Buns Day ("I have hot cross buns!" "Well, wear a long coat and they won't show!")
September 12th: National Chocolate Milkshake Day

September 14th: Eat A Hoagie Day, National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day
